Ready for the final on Wednesday!

Will Luke be a drag?
Will Ailsa's nerves hold out?
Will Pascha's cheery competence win the day?

It was a shame that so many of the challenges weren't finished over the season.

Luke deserved to win but I'd like to have seen a lot more ruffles on the skirt. Loved Pasha's pink dress, wished she managed to pull off what she'd planned. Ailsa's although not my cup of tea was fantastic with its modern twist.

I enjoy watching it and have learnt a lot from all the seasons but there's been better episodes.

I think sewing bee has gone the way of the Interior Design masters show….all about the special pronouns and not about who might have a genuine talent. Sometimes we like to just watch people who are really good at what they do creating something we can all either learn from or admire - not think ‘Christ that’s a bit of a dog’s dinner, I wouldn’t wear/have that in my house’. I’m not sure who the commissioning editors or producers think actually watch the shows…?

I don't think you can deny Luke's got genuine talent. That tie transformation last week was phenomenal. And Ailsa's trousers and sari/kilt mashups were amazing.

I have loved it - I thought Kiell was really good. Last 2 series I had to record and fast forward through Sara pascoes ‘look at me’ nonsense! I would have loved Pascha to win, but based on performance today Luke deserved it!

I agree Kiell's been a brilliant pick. The contestants all really seem to like him.

Half naked Janet in her homemade bikini made me raise my eyebrows!

You can't fault her for inconsistent characterisation.

I would love to see some steampunk sewers on there - they are incredibly inventive and used to making stuff out of anything. As long as they weren't pushed to make it about steampunk - them sewing in top hat and adding a cog to every item...

I think they had a man who did steampunk stuff a couple of series ago? Can't remember his name.

Floralnomad · 24/07/2024 23:16

Well Luke deserved the win based on just those challenges but if they do another series and it’s as poor as this one I won’t be watching past episode 2 . Thanks for the threads @SoupDragon

Binglebong · 24/07/2024 23:17

I think he only lasted a week or two. I know so many who would last a LOT longer. I seem to remember very early there was a reenactor who was basically just used to hand sewing his lose fitting historical shirts. Very good at that but totally overwhelmed otherwise. It was when they were desperate for males.

Yes there are some amazing steampunk and other cosplay sewers out there. I don't know how good they'd be for speed but they'd be good for transformation challenges.

Binglebong · 25/07/2024 00:09

Pretty fast usually- they get a lot of outfits done as everyone wants something new to wear!

His final m2m was definitely the best there. He was great today and should have won all three rounds. But if you look at the series as a whole I think Pascha is a better sewing. No way could they have given her it with that mess of a dress though.

I agree with you.

2Rebecca · 25/07/2024 04:49

I don't think he should have won the TT as his paper dress was too delicate to actually wear and they'd stressed wearable

upinaballoon · 25/07/2024 06:46

Citrusandginger · 24/07/2024 21:30

This reminds me of a Blue Peter programme when I was growing up where they made Lady Di's wedding dress from white bin-bags.

Congratulations. You have won 'post of the week'.

upinaballoon · 25/07/2024 06:50

I think there'll be another Bee. Didn't they ask for people to contact or did I just imagine that?
We can all send comments straight to the BBC, not only put them on here. e.g. what's with the paper plates, please stop it.

Brefugee · 25/07/2024 08:11

I'm still a bit cross about the draping final. They did draping in Indian week.

I’d forgotten that, you are right, there was no need to revisit draping. I enjoyed the series and liked all the sewers (I don’t get the beef with including drag queens, obviously they sew) but it was not as good as previous series.

Luke’s model helped sell his dress- I loved his hair. And he was so cute with Patrick & Esme - Esme is a gay icon & Patrick is eye candy 😂

viques · 24/07/2024 22:21

I think they should re think the whole final. Use all the time over two days to make something amazing, eg something fully lined, or tailored with a perfect fit, I think very few of the garments they have made this season have been finished to a high standard and I don’t think that they have been able to really complete something to their satisfaction . Hems, button holes, zips, there always seemed to be something not perfect, too much rush, not enough finish.

Lukes outfit was amazing, though it might have been helped by having such an amazing model who showed it off to such advantage.

Or a capsule wardrobe over 2 days. Perhaps 1 daytime look and 1 nighttime look that need to link to each other.

AndYesTheWeeDonkeys · 25/07/2024 09:26

A capsule wardrobe would be an excellent challenge.

I know they get to prepare for the made to measure at home each week - but it would be far more interesting to see them work on pieces (almost) in real time. As always the gamifying of a craft, with meaningless time limits, cancels any possibility for viewers to become absorbed by the application of skills.

Mistymorin · 25/07/2024 09:34

IMO, this year's finalists would not have even reached the semis in some previous years!

LuluBlakey1 · 25/07/2024 10:07

I think this has been the poorest series so far of those since Esme has been involved.

I like Kiell and hope he is back next time.

I didn't think the design or sewing skills were great throughout and the transformation task tonight was a weak task for a final.

I am just sick of 'drag' being dragged into every Sewing Bee- it seems to be an obligatory minority for it and I am sick of hearing the word. I don't think it's really about men in dresses but there were two in the final three tonight. It actually excludes many sewers who are probably much better sewers but not young/on-trend/current-fad-in-society enough.

That said Luke was the best sewer in the final and deserved to win.

A kilt is not drag!

Yes … Seasons are always disappointing when they reach the halfway point and you realise almost all the competitors left are there because they haven’t yet been eliminated rather than because they’re outstanding sewers. (God I hate that word! Couldn’t they be seamstresses and seamsters - or something? Obviously not, because then people would have to choose … But there must be a better word than ‘underground conduit for waste matter’.)

Some people use "sewist" but I've also heard people say they don't like that either

Well said 👏👏👏 A kilt is most certainly not drag!!! But in any case, why shouldn't men wear dresses? Luke's model looked fab. JP Gaultier often rocks a skirt (as does David Beckham). It's fashion - unclench!

i use sewist - which i don't realy like but i don't want to be confused with underground waste water channels.

Seamstress? seems like an actual trained job to me and should only be used by those who have earned it, IMO.

I don't mind drag being involved or cosplayers or men, or elderly women, or young women or whatever. What i want are competent sewists who can put in a zip, make a proper welted pocket, know about facings, have an eye for colour and know how to select a fabric that is appropriate to the task.

I want challenges that show these skills (pattern challenges that don't give a finished garment that can be worn (those canvas shoes a year or two ago) are rubbish. A skirt with pockets and a zip and a waistband would be good. etc

I've said my piece about the transformation challenge.

m2m. I want making and i want measuring. And i want them to demonstrate good skills, good finishing and good fabric selection. Two m2m featuring draping within weeks, especially when that's a type of sewing that isn't really within the remit of home sewists generally.

I do like a good theme week though. the Indian one was great. Children's week is always fun, and i think swimwear or underwear in the latter stages really sorts the wheat from the chaff.
