Ready for the final on Wednesday!

Will Luke be a drag?
Will Ailsa's nerves hold out?
Will Pascha's cheery competence win the day?

Yes, lots of other people have their photos taken wearing bikinis. Dare I suggest that she offends because she's heterosexual?

I think it was more likely to be her age.

FriendsDrinkBook · 25/07/2024 17:59

It wasn't actually her age that made me not want to see her bikini picture , it was a combination of things. The sex picture , her comments about explosing herself and just the general vibe that she was going to talk at people about her sex life whether they wanted to hear it or not.

The bikini picture in isolation wouldn't have bothered me at all. Its just swimwear.

I don't think it's really about men in dresses but there were two in the final three tonight

A kilt is not drag!

He was dressed as a woman though- high heels and eye shadow and a top that would normally be part of an evening dress.

Wearing make up and heels doesn’t make anyone a woman though. The more men that break gender stereotypes and wear make up and heels the better. As a society we’re much more “conforming” to gender stereotypes than we were in the 70s and 80s and I don’t think it makes us any better for it.

I don’t think either of the two outfits the men wore were drag. The line for me between drag and gender non-conforming is bras/false boobs. Ailsa’s outfit was clearly a modern take on Scottish male traditional outfits and Luke’s was a dress for a man, cut and styled to a man’s torso. Bowie was wearing man dresses 50 years ago, it’s not new but sadly we forget.

Luke was clearly the winner, but I don’t think any of them could hold a candle to Asmaa and That Dress.

Edited

'I think this has been the poorest series so far of those since Esme has been involved.

I like Kiell and hope he is back next time.

I didn't think the design or sewing skills were great throughout and the transformation task tonight was a weak task for a final.

I am just sick of 'drag' being dragged into every Sewing Bee- it seems to be an obligatory minority for it and I am sick of hearing the word. I don't think it's really about men in dresses but there were two in the final three tonight. It actually excludes many sewers who are probably much better sewers but not young/on-trend/current-fad-in-society enough.

That said Luke was the best sewer in the final and deserved to win.'

This was my original comment- I didn't say they were wearing drag. I think Sewing Bee has become, like so many programmes skewed, in terms of representation, towards 'fads[ in society.

And I disagree with your comment 'The more men that break gender stereotypes and wear make up and heels the better.'

I don't want to see women's sexuality being exploited as it often is in fashion but I think your comment is ridiculous.

ThreeWordHarpy · 25/07/2024 19:24

We’ll have to agree to disagree. In terms of gender stereotypes I’m thinking of things like I’d like girls to be able to have short hair again without being asked if they’re a lesbian, and boys to be able to wear sparkly unicorn t-shirts without being bullied and told they must be a girl for liking such things. When I was at uni in the 80s, it was the fashion for the male students to wear eye liner, lippy and black nail varnish on a night out. Not sure how well received that would be these days.

I’m not sure how your comment about women’s sexuality follows on from gender stereotypes, but as we’re not in FWR I don’t purpose taking this tangent any further here. I’m happy to continue the discussion over on FWR if you like?

He wasn't dressed as a woman at all and he wasn't wearing a dress like you claimed.

In the words of David Bowie in 1972 - I'm not wearing a woman's dress, it's a man's dress.

Brefugee · 25/07/2024 19:34

Yeah, they're men wearing clothes. I really DGAF about outdated stupid gender stereotypes.

I've been to a few festivals lately, and one thing i like about modern male rock fans are the black kilts they wear.

If a woman wears trousers, no make up and trainers does that mean she's dressed as a man?

OP posts:
123ZYX · 25/07/2024 19:57

@LuluBlakey1 wasn't the top based on a waistcoat, as would traditionally be worn with a kilt?

KnittedCardi · 24/07/2024 21:54

I just feel the whole series has been set up for Luke to win. So many challenges suited to his skill for drag. Gloves, oh yes, I've made lots of gloves. Draping, oh yes, I drape a lot ..... Diva looks.... Etc etc

I agree.

I think they've really wanted a drag queen non-binary winner. And have judged accordingly.

MeowCatPleaseMeowBack · 25/07/2024 20:09

It's amazing that a programme so full of joy and good-naturedness has led to a thoroughly depressing thread.

I find the sewer v sewist thing interesting as sewist is just plain wrong to me like squeaky chalk on a blackboard.

Same here.

I was pleased t see that Kiel said "Sewer/sewers" instead of the horrible "sewist".

It's only written down that it looks "wrong" - when spoken it is very obvious what people are talking about.

BiscuityBoyle · 25/07/2024 21:08

The best sewers might well be no fun to watch. They talk about casting shows like this, not them having contestants. But I do agree that while these guys all seemed like nice people and fun to watch, they weren’t the best sewers.

As for Janet, I think she looked great in her bikini. I think the problem was her comments earlier on in the show, not that she was old or heterosexual. If she had been a young gay man who had a painting of him having sex on show and we then saw a picture of him in a pair of speedos I would have thought the same.

I think I missed the sex picture (fortunately)

To be honest, I'd forgotten it. I would have been half-watching. Was it one she painted herself? The makers of the programme wanted it and wanted the bikini pic, too. A sedate dress wouldn't have suited them.

To be fair, the threads are usually great if you ignore the minority who whinge about drag artists.

If you're feeling a bit down after the final/the series/the general moaning on the thread, I recommend my course of action which is to cheer myself up by reading Monkseal's recaps of series 4 and 5.

It's still a lovely show, Patrick and Esme are fun. Kiell is a huge improvement. There were several gorgeous sews over the series and some very nice contestants, and unlike Bake-off they've kept the History Bit.

Hobbesmanc · 26/07/2024 10:52

Just managed to catch up having studiously avoided any risk of seeing the winner

It's maybe not top drawer Bee. But I've enjoyed the series despite the new presenters pretty awkward jokes. Sad to see the predictable comments about diversity. I think the casting is always so interesting. It would be tedious to watch highly proficient sewers every week. We watch it for the lovable eccentrics.

Luke deserved the win on this weeks performance. They were creative and also better technically. They should have won round two. They put in a zip and did much more structure than Pasha.

Well done all

SoupDragon · 26/07/2024 12:24

Luke's transformation was unwearable though and rightly marked down for that.

Luke’s is the best, he should win.

It was so much easier than Pascha but the final result was better.

Suntree32 · 26/07/2024 12:37

I've really enjoyed this series, and will, as always, miss it next week. I think it was different as there were no real stand out sewers, lots of obviously very good ones. It meant more of them were making mistakes or running out of time without being able to make it look more presentable.
I wanted Pascha to win, but on the day Luke was better.
Also loved Kiell (huge Ghosts fan which may have influenced this) but he was gentler than some of the recent presenters. Less smutty jokes - which I've always cringed at when watching with young teens! Loved his interactions with the judges and competitors.
