Ready for the final on Wednesday!

Will Luke be a drag?
Will Ailsa's nerves hold out?
Will Pascha's cheery competence win the day?

Pianist.

The standard of sewing on sewing bee always seems much higher to me than that of the average hobbyist. Anyway I cried when Luke won, well deserved win, and loved all the contestants. It’s such a wholesome show.

If that's the 10 best amateur sewers in Britain I'd be horrified.
The 10 best that applied for the show.

But that's the point. I don't believe they ARE the ten best sewers that applied for the show. We did have a pp who said they had applied but didn't have a 'gimmick' and it does appear that they are looking to box tick 10 diverse contestants for an entertainment show, rather than the ten best sewers who apply.

I'm with the folks who don't care if we are watching 10 white, middle class, middle aged women or 10 people from all walks of life, all ages, races, genders. I don't really care who they are or what they have to say. I don't care if they are utterly dull with no personality.

I watch it for the sewing. And that was lacking.

You'd be in the minority though, people (not massively into sewing) wouldn't watch it and it would be scrapped. It's a TV show not a normal sewing competition which is genuinely trying to find the best sewer.

Pianist

Again, noun + ist.

The contestants have to have personality and be able to "perform" on TV. Leaving my sewing ability out of this, I'd be shit at Sewing Bee because I clam up and would be really, really awkward.

men who do drag are at an advantage because they are used to performing and sew a lot. I suppose you could end up with a whole batch of contestants who all do drag if they didn't aim for a balanced group. So, the opposite of what some seem to want.

I find the sewer v sewist thing interesting as sewist is just plain wrong to me like squeaky chalk on a blackboard.

Piano is an adjective and an adverb as well as a noun but I see what you mean.

PickAChew · 25/07/2024 15:07

Sewingist is a bit of a mouthful, though.

I am so going to be roasted for this, but why do all these programmes have to be diverse and representative?? Why can't they just pick the best 10 of any applicants? That might be all men, or all women, or all gay, or all POC. They should be the best. As long as all and any can apply, it would be refreshing to know they are the best regardless.

You know when we usually hear that? when women and other minorities manage to get jobs like head of the BBC, head of the Police, or Prime Minister. Suddenly diversity and positive discrimination are dirty words because white men aren't doing everything and running everything.

They have a good screening programme to get a diverse lot of contestants, who can a) sew and b) provide entertainment. I'm ok with that, and most of the men who have made it into later rounds, have fully deserved to be there.

I think that the early rounds can be a bit hit and miss for who goes, or who has a bad weekend in the sewing room, but by the time we get to the quarter- and semi- finals we have the ones who should be there.

I probably had more of a "thing for" Pascha because i used to fence. The dress she wore yesterday was lovely. Loved Ailsa's outfit too. And Luke was Luke - as i said, Luke grew on me in later stages and the model was excellent.

I confess! I wouldn't watch it if everyone was really good. An example is the portrait artist/ painting shows. Never watch them. The Piano sits in between in that those selected are very talented but their stories make the show special. Some people still complain. But the kad who grew up jn care made me bawl my eyes out.

AnnaMagnani · 25/07/2024 15:36

I can see it's a TV show so they need people whose personality shows on screen. And who can talk about what they are doing.

I also like the diversity and showing how many different people sew.

But ultimately for me it is a sewing show and I want to see some quality garments not made of paper cups

I feel the balance of casting has been wrong this season and too skewed towards diversity and personality and not enough sewing skill.

Janet looked great. Why the need for bitchy comments.

Yes, lots of other people have their photos taken wearing bikinis. Dare I suggest that she offends because she's heterosexual?

2Rebecca · 25/07/2024 16:05

I think the problem is everyone has a personality but introverted quiet personalities get overlooked in favour of extrovert personalities and most of the dressmakers I know are introverts

Yes, no one would have commented at all had she been gay. It's 100% to do with her heterosexuality 🙄

she "offends" because she is an older woman showing her body in a bikini on TV.

murasaki · 25/07/2024 16:15

For me it wasn't about her age, it was just an extension of the sex picture madness. She could have been 20 and i still would have had a flashback to the picture. Unnecessary really.

murasaki · 25/07/2024 16:16

And I agree, she looked good, but too much naked Janet.

SoupDragon · 25/07/2024 16:20

Yes, the portrait has clouded my view of Janet too. If not for that I probably wouldn't have given the bikini photo a second thought but, because of what the portrait said about her personality and life, my first thought was "exhibitionist!"

Exactly. Without the painting, I would have been all 'great, Janet's having a good time on her hols', with it, it was a bit 'oh god, I don't want to think about Janet and her 'good times'.

LighthouseTheme · 25/07/2024 16:30

Cleanist
(vs/ Cleaner)

FriendsDrinkBook · 25/07/2024 16:40

I actually filled in an application for sb 2024 , mainly because I was curious. I uploaded a selection of well made garments , jeans , a coat , a bra , a quilted blanket and a jersey top. I filled it in fully but didn't upload a video of myself as it was optional. I didn't get any further than that point. I suspect they really want to see you on camera before they consider you further and that my 'story' isn't interesting to them.

EvilRingahBitch · 25/07/2024 17:00

If you'd done a straw poll of who was going to be pictured in a bikini for the "what they've done since" montage then our answers would have been 50% "Janet" and 50% "Oh I can never remember names, who was the one with the sex picture?"

Evil? No. Predictable? Yes

FriendsDrinkBook · 25/07/2024 17:04

@EvilRingahBitch I was fortunately prepared for that as the last post of hers I saw before unfollowing her on Instagram was a stack of bikinis she'd made.

I sympathise with those that had a surprise though.

Brefugee · 25/07/2024 17:12

Good on Janet. I didn't appreciate the sex picture because i don't like to think of anyone having sex. But good on her for the outfits, the dancing, the bikini picture.

People really hate older / elderly ladies doing stuff that everyone else does. The more we see of it the better.

you know what we didn't see this year? nary a rouleau strap in sight. I deffo feel cheated!

BeaLola · 25/07/2024 17:36

I watch it for the sewing. And that was lacking.

I agree with this - wasn't it last week that Suzy said it was the first hook & eye she had sewn / and ten Esme had to tell her they go inside "hidden" as she had put them visibly on the outside
