One summer evening in 1984, a five-year-old boy disappears in the countryside of southern Sweden. The police investigation fails to find the truth, leaving rumours, suspicions and a grieving family.

Twenty years later, the boy's older sister, Vera, is leading a group therapy session in Stockholm, when a young man describes a strangely familiar childhood memory of a disappearance.

A shaken Vera travels home to her shattered family to find out, once and for all, what really happened during the never-ending summer.

Not sure if this is a repeat. The storyline seems familiar.

Ooh thank you for posting this. This looks just up my street, not sure if a repeat but I’ve definitely not seen it

Wow wow wow

Couldn't stop watching this. Excellent.

I won't give any spoilers, will just say watch it.

Piggywaspushed · 20/07/2024 20:56

My planner says it's episode 4 tonight!?

Witchbitch20 · 20/07/2024 21:17

Absolutely excellent!

duc748 · 20/07/2024 21:49

This passed me by completely, and I usually love a Scandi. Based on this enthusiasm, I'll have a look later!

efeslight · 20/07/2024 22:03

Sounds interesting thanks

Viviennemary · 20/07/2024 22:58

That does sound good. I missed it. Might be on catch up.

All episodes are on iplayer. I binged it over two nights.

I set to record and then saw in time, so didn't watch, that was episode 5. So maybe it was me not noticing when it first started. Or the BBC has messed up.

Was going to go to iPlayer but not till tomorrow - but something to look forward to particularly after positive posts.

Sorry for any confusion. I saw it listed in a paper and am sure it said starting tonight.

Thanks goodness its iPlayer so wont get long drawn out interruptions by ads.

I've done 2 episodes now. A bit slow but well made. I did wonder why they didn't make it clearer the modern part was 2004, or why they didn't just move the past bit to 2000. It didn't seem that the years matter but I spent the first half hour confused by the claim that 'Isak' could have been a child in 1985!

YabaJaba · 21/07/2024 15:20

I'll just leave this here.

SPOILER COMMENT!

I have now watched the whole series and on the whole thought it good, though have to say I thought nearly all of the characters were not that endearing - and sometime quite irritating!

However, I think the uncle / brother character (Harald?) was too much of a pantomime villian. His actions in relation to the plot could still have happened without him stomping round like some the lord of the manor and everyone meekly letting him rule the roost.

I didn't mind the jumping between time zones, but at one point felt too much time was being spent in the past which didn't really move the plot forward.

And thought how the plot twists developed were mostly credible.

And liked the way it was filmed.

I sort of expected the ending that came, although never at any time did I think that what happened to Billy was what was eventually revealed.

Families eh?

Sad

It was beautifully filmed. So much better in quality than much UK output.

SPOILERS AGAIN

I thought it was essential that Harald was Lord of he Manor because he got lackeys (Berit, old boy with the batteries etc) to do stuff for him and had a convenient windfarm to bury people in concrete.

Poor little Billy.

IwantToRetire · 26/07/2024 00:32

Interesting. I had seen him more as a bully who would have intimidated people even if he hadn't had status.

Must admit I couldn't quite work out about how he regarded treated his sister. Was this him just thinking he knew best, or something else ... he certainly did seem to understand her at all.

I dipped in a while ago, and I realised I'd only seen ep #1. Just watched the second, and liking it very much so far.

IwantToRetire · 26/07/2024 02:02

oh no - late night typo Blush

he certainly did NOT seem to understand her at all.

Oh yes, he would : his status helped him though.

At one point, I thought they were implying slightly incestuous thoughts about Magda - but that seemed to be dropped.

Seeing Harald naked is a sight I don't want to see again! But hooray for a programme where it was the man who was naked!

Wordsfailmeeverytime · 27/07/2024 00:14

Just binge watched the last 3 episodes. Really enjoyed it if that’s the right word !
I’m wondering if the mum was a narcissist which would explain Vera’s inability to separate her professional life from her emotional one. It was good there was no gore or unnecessary violence that so many Scandi thrillers seem to revel in…

JMSA · 28/07/2024 23:13

I've just finished all 6 episodes and enjoyed it on the whole.
I think the 'sweeping everything under the carpet' mentality is prevalent in some small towns, and I'm glad Vera came along to blow it all up.
Felt so bad for Isak and Billy. Hated Harald and his bloody useless sister! It must be so damaging to have a mother like that.

duc748 · 01/08/2024 15:38

I also binge-watched the last three eps last night. I have a few questions though. What about Isak? Are we meant to take his memory-loss as being genuine? Caused by what? And where had he been all this time? Also, in an earlier ep, if memory serves, Magda tells Krister the cop that Billy often played with "Isak, a boy from the next farm". Why was this lead never investigated?

Piggywaspushed · 01/08/2024 16:01

Didn't he explain he was taken into care?

There were rather a lot of plot holes . There was much they didn't investigate. He wasn't really called Izak was he? There was a real one. I don't think Billy did play with our one?

MorrisZapp · 01/08/2024 16:23

Marking to come back to when I've watched it all! The main character looks like my best friend. It's all very Swedish and beige but it looks promising.

MorrisZapp · 04/08/2024 13:00

Fully binged! Omg I couldn't step away. Two very poor casting choices in Matthais the charisma free polis, and the poundshop Russell Brand she was supposedly in love with.

Everything else was brilliant. Izak's leather jacket needs a spinoff series. I thought it was all so cleverly done, although I wouldn't have expected estranged yet slightly sexy siblings to to banging shots and having a loud confession session in a motel dining room at teatime.

I want Vera's Y2K wardrobe. And her little bug car.

Piggywaspushed · 04/08/2024 16:27

Matthias was the brother wasn't he? I liked him. There was a bit where him and his dad both sipped a beer in unison and it was genuinely clever and poignant.

Wordsfailmeeverytime · 04/08/2024 16:48

One of the better scandi dramas. Might try the second series of Wisting if it’s still on I player.
