Strictly Come Dancing '24 Thread 1 : Who will be our celebs and Pros?

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 13/07/2024 20:45

Starting a new SCD thread for chat prior to the series as the last is about to fill.

These threads are usually helmed by @PolkadotsAndMoonbeams and I normally deputise, but I haven't seen her around in a while

This thread will discuss who has been chosen for the show, but not who has been paired with who as that's a spoiler for the first show.

This is a NO SPOILER thread

Wasn't scott Mills also a lobster?

ChessieFL · 14/07/2024 16:47

Scott Mills was a crab

KeirSpoutsTwaddle · 14/07/2024 17:00

I hope hope hope it polishes up nicely again and they stop with the daft extras and focus on the dancing.

Poor Richie and Hakuna bloody Matata.

And Gio sneering at him constantly 😢

TakeOnFlea · 14/07/2024 17:36

"The only other explanation is that the BBC decided to go back and watch every second of ALL footage, for ALL the couples which you are also saying they don’t do."

No it's not. Someone could've come across it without watching ALL the footage of ALL the couples

KeirSpoutsTwaddle · 14/07/2024 15:47

Sticking to the topic… I’d like to see no stupid character costumes that stop you dancing, and dance weeks so we compare like with like. No comparing contempowaft with jive with rhumba.

I want to see couple's choice abolished altogether, but they should keep theatre/jazz as an option. I hate contempowaft, street dance does nothing for me, and it irritates me that in effect couples can't help but be marked high because there aren't any rules around it. At least theatre/jazz dances involve quite a lot of difficulty.

I also want someone to give the judges a major talking to about not scoring stupidly high in the early stages and leaving themselves no choice but to start dishing out 10s in ridiculous volume before the series is half way through.

Ah but you could see where I got them mixed up 😂

I think that's what they need to do as Len would say stop faffing about!

TennisWithDeborah · 14/07/2024 20:43

It’s getting a bit stale for me. I agree about back to basics. No sob stories, no CC. Results on Saturday night. No professional dancers as celebs where you can’t tell which is the pro when they dance in week 1.

But it’s so great that Amy will be back. Aljaz too.

I like the Halloween costumes and I think they appeal to children especially. But yes, costumes shouldn’t be cumbersome and get in the way of the dancing.

Blackcats7 · 14/07/2024 22:51

I can’t stand the made up nonsense in the vt of couples. I don’t watch the show live anymore so that I can fast forward this crap.
Ditto the wringing out emotional stuff.
Hoping there won’t be such an obvious ringer like layton last year. I found on other groups it was impossible to call this out without being called a racist homophobe when it was simply clear that he was a very experienced dancer before entering Strictly. I found it dull to watch him because he started at a level where any improvement was hard to see.
Agree cut down on the theme weeks.
The show is enough on it’s own. All these attempts to gild the lily are actually spoiling it. I worry it will end up as a parody like eurovision.

Yeah I've always hated the VT skits they do. They did some nice VTs the first few series, then it turned into daft sketches and jokey shit. Ugh.

Mymanyellow · 15/07/2024 05:39

They could show us a brief video of what the dance should look like and bits to look out for. Even training room footage. Not days at the seaside or flying a helicopter to prepare for a jive.
I love strictly, watched it for years but it needs to be careful not to lose its core viewers.

Runningupthecurtains · 15/07/2024 08:01

Yep every time someone responds to calls to return to waltz/cha cha for the first two weeks with 'eurggh, I'm not sure I could watch the same dance over and over' I wonder why they are watching a ballroom dancing show. I would love a return to recognisable dances to correct music (oh and sleeve hankies, bring back sleeve hankies).

Daily Mail today -
"According to The Sun, they were presented with video of Graziano's actions on Thursday, before speaking to Zara ahead of the weekend and finally sacking the Italian on Monday.A source told the publication: 'Graziano has held up his hands and admits his behaviour was extreme and unacceptable. He knows there is no return and quite rightly. Yet why was no action taken sooner to nip this situation in the bud?'Graziano feels if he had received proper support and some sort of anger management training, an escalation could have been prevented.'For the Beeb’s part, Graziano was not the only dancer being spoken to and they had absolutely no idea about the alleged kicking — which it is claimed happened twice — and as soon as they were alerted, they took decisive action and fired him.'They added: 'Graziano is in bits. He is being monitored 24/7 by his wife Giada and mum who has moved in to take care of him."

ReadyTeddy1000 · 15/07/2024 09:40

So, if someone else had put Graz on anger management training, it would have stopped things escalating? Really? That's his defence?!

Mrsjayy · 15/07/2024 09:48

Anger management training so it's the employers fault that he can't control himself?

Bluffinwithmymuffin · 15/07/2024 10:02

@ReadyTeddy1000 @Mrsjayy

My thoughts exactly. Lucky he has his wife and his mum to look after him, eh...

Mrsjayy · 15/07/2024 10:27

I understand professional dancers are passionate and perfectionist blah blah but hitting out because of arm positions aren't right or whatever isn't on! Its a TV show not a professional dance competition. They need to calm down I am assuming this is what happened with Giovanni !

Indeed. My eyes have almost fallen out of my head! I will wait to see how the probe on Gio goes, but I hope his behaviour hasn't been as bad.

Mymanyellow · 15/07/2024 10:42

Anger management! What’s there to be so angry about? It’s only a dancing competition. Ok I know it’s more than that for a lot of people but can’t believe it’s makes the pros so angry they kick the celebs.

wantonsoupwanted · 15/07/2024 10:43

From what I understand, 5 people have gone on record about Gio's terrible behaviour and one has a diagnosis of trauma. Others describe symptoms that sound like trauma. I think it will be presented as less serious because he wasn't violent but he has caused stress injuries for his pupils and fellow dancers it really shouldn't be minimised. No for of bullying is ok as the consequences for the victims can be longstanding.

Lentilweaver · 15/07/2024 11:07

@Mymanyellow I think the pros need to win and raise their profiles, otherwise they don't get gigs like West end gigs or TV shows, or are unable to set up dance schools when they leave. Look at James Jordan and the stuff he is having to do off Strictly: fitness, skating, all sorts. He's constantly trying to raise his profile.

However, this is no excuse for abusing the celebs. It's for the Beeb to introduce proper safeguarding, especially for the young female celebs..

Given his complaint at the weekend about not being able to add a comment to the press releases about his sacking I totally believe he is the 'source' in this story. Anger mgmt should have been provided is a crappy excuse.

Graz and Gio may well have been good friends on the show as both Italian. If Graz knew Gio's training 'techniques' and he was getting away with it plus had won with Rose and was very popular perhaps Graz started to get tougher and sterner with Zara. Perhaps once Amanda quit and Gio was out he ramped it up more to try and increase his own profile.

Wheresthebeach · 15/07/2024 14:41

The Beeb needs to do a flat rate payment for the Pro’s rather than base it on how far they get. With some celebs being pro level it’s just not a fair playing field.
how this wasn’t dealt with at the time boggles my mind. If there was video proof then it means that either nobody looked at it or they knew and did nothing.

I'm fairly sure that the pros aren't paid according to results, for precisely the reason you suggest; it would be tough to look pleased at getting a paunchy middle aged chef instead of a boyband ringer if you knew he'd be costing you twenty grand when he went home in week 2.
