I think people liked the sugababes set because they banged out the hits. Ans really seemed to love being there. If I'm mistaken Dua Lipa missed one or two hits (save one in a video screen) which would have pleased everyone. I kind of think Glastonbury is about doing those big numbers because the acts won't be being seen just by diehard fans.

I mean you obv can't compare the two though. One performer is at her peak; the other three peaked in the nineties. But the latter just seemed delighted to be there. I didn't get that so much from DL

But I am old!

Dua Lipa is too much of a diva for Glastonbury. She also stood Elton John up last year for a dinner date with her family!

EstellaWaitHereForMe · 29/06/2024 09:54

Anyone see Fontaines? I missed it last night so will get it on catch up later. Seeing them later this year too, can't wait.

faffadoodledo · 29/06/2024 10:11

@BurntBroccoli and wasn't she horribly late for a big gig last year?
There's diva and then there's plain rude. Apologies if it wasn't her!

did she stand Elton John up or was she just holding out for her own slot?

Aquarius1234 · 29/06/2024 10:13

Sugababes were in the 2000s not 90s.
Anyway when you have loads of hits you cant play them all, dua lipa has had loads of songs .
I bet Madonna wouldn't do my favourite 80s songs just a medley...
I think just cos it's streaming world wide shouldn't mean it ends up being transatlantic and weird.
Dua sounded American at times I think that's the thing.

Aquarius1234 · 29/06/2024 10:18

No idea when Dua started acting like she was Adele. Fame goes to their heads and 100s millions.

Lana del Rey was about an hour late and they had to cut her off at 11pm due to the curfew!
Not sure about Dua Lipa.
It's so unprofessional and disrespectful as people have paid a lot of money to see them.

faffadoodledo · 29/06/2024 10:23

Yep. You're right @BurntBroccoli
Sorry Dua Lipa!

Madonna was 2 hours late few years back.
No way would she be on time exactly at Glastonbury.

Lots of 80s bands don't seem to have headlined. Not cool enough.. maybe maybe soon.

SagaNorensPorche · 29/06/2024 10:25

@Aquarius1234 I said the same to my husband about the American twang. She's clearly talented but not for me.

Thought PJ Harvey was amazing and the Sugababes were fun. Loved Bombay Bicycle club too, so uplifting. Paul Heaton was great too.

Looking forward to Cyndi Lauper later.

Aquarius1234 · 29/06/2024 10:28

Beautiful south would have been better with Jacqui Abbott the singer. Wasn't the same.

sugarbyebye · 29/06/2024 10:36

This is the kit did a beautiful set. I love a banjo!

we tuned in for a bit of dua lipa. I’m not into pop at that end of the spectrum (much prefer my pop at the beautiful south end), so I realise it’s not for me, but yeah it did seem very Eurovision. If I was watching Eurovision I’m sure I’d have rated it!

catching up on Idles this morning. Disappointed Heilung doesn’t seem to be on iPlayer, I missed that and it looked epic.

pJ Harvey is just a goddess - I’m glad I saw that one on the tv as I’d have missed all the herb sniffing from the crowd. I was hoping Beth Gibbons was going to be one of the mystery acts. Saw her recently too and it was the most beautiful performance.

She was off sick week before last and last week her voice sounded really deep and not like her!
Whatever it was she's not recovered and shouldn't be working imo. She could ruin her voice which isn't great if that is your job!
I like Jo - I know she gets loads of stick.

Thanks - yes was really worried for her! She looked like she should be in bed

BurntBroccoli · 29/06/2024 10:47

I much preferred Billie Eilish headlining a few years ago. Hadn't really heard much of her stuff but I purchased her album after that performance. Such a pure voice.
She is so professional (and totally non-diva-ish) and you can feel the warmth for the crowd pouring out of her when she performs.

BurntBroccoli · 29/06/2024 10:51

Does anyone know where to watch the Squeeze set? They were on at 12pm yesterday and I can't find it anywhere.

MorrisZapp · 29/06/2024 10:53

Dua Lipa was bloody awful. I like having a dance in the kitchen to her upbeat pop tunes but when did Glasto turn into the Eurovision Song Contest? That first number was utterly forgettable, no hooks at all, and produced as if it was a Broadway show stopper. Dreadful.

Then a recognisable tune, One Kiss, which just doesn't come across live at all.

Each to their own, I'm an old git and young people can spend their parents many hundreds of pounds as they please, but I'll never forget seeing the Pixies at Reading: raw, real and mind blowing. Tunes and guitars, you'll never convince me that festivals are for anything else.

Jacqui Abbott isn't well.

sugarbyebye · 29/06/2024 11:30

Yeah I think Paul Heaton said before Rotterdam that they weren't sure whether to do it or not as it's Jacqui's song and it's not the same without her.

StripedPiggy · 29/06/2024 11:31

@MorrisZapp

Agree completely, but I’m also an old git. I’m not knocking Dua Lipa ; she can sing and she’s obviously good at what she does. But that sort of heavily produced, manufactured modern pop just doesn’t work well when taken out of context & put on a festival stage. She really was like a Eurovision act, and that is not a compliment.

I saw a bit of their set last night but will watch the rest today. I love them, love his voice. Had tickets to their last tour but kids had covid so couldn't go. I hope I get to see them at some point.

Glastonbury isn’t a rock or indie festival though, it’s a performing arts festival - they’ve never claimed to be anything else, and yeah that includes guitar bands but it covers everything else too including pop :)

And I’m an oldie who went to Reading in the 90s too :)

Yeah I heard him say that, I think I read she’s taking some time out to look after her son.

sugarbyebye · 29/06/2024 12:33

Another one who was at Reading in the 90s!

Yeah I have no issue with the main stage being full of pop. There's plenty to keep me occupied elsewhere.

@mewkins my aunt taught Grian at school, he grew up in a really nice suburb of dublin, Skerries. I used to spend my summers there, loved it. His accent is a lot stronger than my cousins, though. I suspect he hams it up a bit, which I have no problem with as it sounds amazing.

BurntBroccoli · 29/06/2024 12:55

Just listening on Radio 2 to a recording of Dua Lipa from last night - sounds very flat and dull even with a lot of prerecorded backing track.

When you hear Kylie live on the radio her voice is still sparkly!

PassingStranger · 29/06/2024 13:32

Dua Lipa was good. The whole thing was full of energy
The choreography alone would have taken some work, plus all the fireworks and light an excellent show.
