Have to admit I never watched the original apart from the odd episode here and there.

But thought I would post a link for anyone interested

(Couldn't see another link so sorry if a duplicate.)

BBC One - Rebus

DS Rebus is drawn into a violent criminal conflict that turns personal.

I'll probably watch it, but I know I'll hanker after the gruff, gravelly voice of Ken Stott.

IwantToRetire · 18/05/2024 21:17

Well I'm recording it as I dont want to find out later I missed out.

Doesn't seem to be on iPlayer yet so maybe only releasing week by week.

Apparently it was made for a Swedish tv platform, and then bought by the BBC. Maybe it will have a more nordic feel?

Oh no, have just seen who the lead actor is and always found him toe curling unlikeable in Outlander - sigh.

Parking myself here. I like the actor I think he's toe curling because Outlander has a shoddy script (doesn't stop me watching it though).

feellikeanalien · 18/05/2024 21:21

Rebus will always be Ken Stott. Haven't watched this but just looking at the stills the actors playing Rebus and Siobhan don't look anything like I feel they should.

That's not just from watching the old series but also from reading the books. I don't know the male lead but he doesn't look shabby enough for Rebus.

flyingwingsabove · 18/05/2024 21:22

Just switched on for this. Big shoes to fill.

DrStrangesSmarterSister · 18/05/2024 21:24

I never quite bought KS as Rebus, and think that the current actor could be a better fit for me.

I haven't read any Rebus for years though. Where's this in the timeline then, quite far back?

I know, I know - I used to be such a huge Rebus fan 🙈.

WappityWabbit · 18/05/2024 21:27

I started watching this last night and enjoyed it. It's a younger Rebus so not directly comparable with the Ken Stott version, thankfully.

I've read a lot of the Rebus books and adore the Audible versions read by James Macpherson (from Taggart), for anyone interested.

John Hannah just didn't cut it IMO, when he played the part.

IwantToRetire · 18/05/2024 21:31

Oh so not a "remake" more like Endeavour to Morse?

Logging out of this thread now as will be watching later. Smile

I'm up to episode 4, loved it, got that gritty feel about it that I feelthe books have.

Richard Rankin is really good as the lead, he has that brooding look I see in my head when I read the books.

Episode 1 was a bit slow and conusing but it just got better and better as each episode went on. Will finish the series tomorrow night.

TellyUsername · 18/05/2024 22:27

I really enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

KohlaParasaurus · 19/05/2024 10:40

I've watched the first episode. Not my Rebus, not my Cafferty, and definitely not my Siobhan.

SadJaneGrey · 19/05/2024 11:46

I enjoyed it, we binge watched on IPlayer.
Dark and gritty.

Funnywonder · 19/05/2024 12:16

Definitely going to watch this. I remember Rebus was played by John Hannah for a while, way back when. Absolutely loved Ken Stott!

Funnywonder · 19/05/2024 12:17

Ah, just realised John Hannah has already been mentioned😁

Hoosemover · 19/05/2024 14:25

I’m not sure I like it. The previous TV adaptations have been portrayed rebus as middle-class (working class made good) character. I don’t get that for this version.

The fact it set in modern day is a bit…meh

It just reminds me of Crime by Irvine Welsh.

it would be good if Ken Stott could play a retired rebus.

Lovemycat2023 · 19/05/2024 16:13

I’ve read that the later episodes in the series are really good. We’re in Edinburgh at the moment and they aren’t doing the Rebus tours anymore but we’ve been to visit a few of the locations from the books (though not the Oxford Bar). They repeated a program on BBC4 last night with Ian Rankin about Edinburgh which was really good

CoffeeAndPeanuts · 19/05/2024 16:18

I think they need more scenes of him naked on the bed.

LesserSpottedAlligator · 19/05/2024 16:25

Must admit Richard Rankin has definitely got something about him.

If I'm a bad person for having let that thought cross my mind, I'm glad I'm not the only one 😁

ApolloandDaphne · 19/05/2024 18:16

I loved John Hannah as Rebus. Wasn't keen on Ken Stott. I'm looking forward the watching the new one.

It’s the voice. I adore his voice!

diddl · 19/05/2024 21:13

Is it as gruesome as the KS ones?

Very definitely. I mean Ken Stott was Rebus for me, but I'm happy to suspend my disbelief for this young imposter.

We went to the Oxford Bar the last time we were in Edinburgh, it was actually quite near our hotel. Defo don't think that's where they're filming - the bar is teeny tiny! There's a bigger bar room though!

I really disliked this. Usually a Rebus fan but this Rebus is unpleasant. The other characters are wrong too. Cafferty and Rebus are meant to be a similar age. It looked as though Rebus was trying to kill an old man.
