Our Flag Means Death: Thread 2. Still utterly brilliant and we are still obsessed!

Ahoy there mateys! Hop aboard our ‘safe space ship’ thread 2, where we can continue to wax lyrical about our favourite show.

If you haven’t yet seen Our Flag Means Death, what are you waiting for? Do go watch it (on BBC iPlayer) and then come back here and join us.

You may have heard that this is a comedy about pirates and think that's not for you. But it’s actually about self-discovery, healing and found-family with a love story at its heart. It does begin as a sort of pirate workplace comedy, but in episode 4 the tone changes and that’s where the main story really starts. The joint leads are both damaged by abusive backgrounds and think they want what the other has. The show is about their healing and their respective journeys. It’s tender, romantic, funny, emotionally intelligent and utterly refreshing. It subverts genre expectations. There is comedy, absurdity and a good amount of heartbreak and despair - sometimes in the same scene! The acting is outstanding (Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby especially). But the writing, music, costumes, sets, the sheer attention to detail – for a show with only 18 half-hour episodes it is still keeping us talking, a full thread and many re-watches later. Can you tell how much I love it?

If you think this might appeal, do watch it, then come back and talk to us. It would be lovely if more were to join our crew. But be aware it's a show that needs time. The 2nd lead doesn’t arrive until the end of episode 3 and that’s when the main story starts. You need to give it at least 4 episodes. It then took me several more to fully appreciate what I was watching but then I was hooked - and had to immediately watch it all over again. If you like Good Omens, What We Do in the Shadows, Ghosts or even Bridgerton, this might be the show for you.

(I’ve kept this spoiler free, but if you scroll down you will no doubt find many, so beware!)

Did someone mention folding stuff?

Yay you got my reference x

He's still just Murray from Flight of the Conchords to me.

Oh, sweet summer child 😉

BillStickersIsInnocent · 20/05/2024 18:28

No we don’t!

I feel I’m slightly losing my mind in the fanfic. Why do I have to work/parent/fold stuff??

You really don't. My family have survived fine for the last year+, even in the heady days of season 2 (pirate versions, of course) when I tended to trail off mid sentence thinking of Ed's biceps.

LiveshipParagon · 20/05/2024 20:19

Hey pirate fans, it's so lovely to see other people loving this love story so much. It grabbed me so hard in February ish last year and I've barely surfaced from fandom since ❤

If you're after a speculative s3 fic, I recommend this one: still a WIP at present but the author is reliable for updates.

I cannot believe I haven't seen a reference to Constellationism yet! Modern AU, utterly brilliant (although the author updates soooo slowly). Just beautiful. 2 stories so far Temptation 'Verse - Shearwater - Our Flag Means Death (TV) [Archive of Our Own]]

Actually I have hundreds of recs (kind of been a little bit feral since March 2023, it's basically a sickness at this point). What is anyone in the mood for - canon, AU, filth?

Seconded, oh my god that's the most beautiful thing to read ever. The writing is exquisite.

Bookmarked for later, thank you. I've only got into fanfiction in the last few months, so there will be masses of good stuff I've not read yet. I mean, I'm new to fandoms in general - it's just something I've never explored at all before as this is the first show I've ever felt this way about. I suspect quite a few us are the same in that regard.

Aw yeah, there are so many good fics (and fanartists) out there. So much to love! The variety of AU fic is mind-blowing. Like the fandom heard Ed say "I can do anything" and took it 100% literally.

TriceratopsRocks · 20/05/2024 22:33

Thinking of Stede again (because, let's face it 🤷‍♀️), It was towards the end of S1 where I started to think differently about him. I think it was the moments of sincerity and competence we got in 1.8 to 1.10 that started it off. We've talked before about how sexy those qualities can be. And then he went full-on romantic hero, right at the end. That's what did it for me. And then, when I re-watched S1, I realised he was utterly gorgeous all along and I'd somehow missed it the first time. I think it was the clothes that hid his appeal. Those were mostly not sexy!

Just finished episode 8. The bit where they're tied up at the end and Ed stretches his leg out and touches Stede's leg with his foot 😭😍

BillStickersIsInnocent · 21/05/2024 12:50

@AhBiscuits the most romantic thing. And it just gets better and better here on in. Enjoy the ride!

Ok so I've just read these two... But it's not finished 😰! I can't leave them where they are! Help! What do I do??? I made the mistake of not checking. Or realising. You did in fact mention author updates. But now what? I suppose I wait for them to finish and then read it all again. That's not a problem, it's really excellent 😁. It's got me totally hooked, but now it's left me floundering around wondering what to do. But it does explain why I hadn't read it yet. I normally only read finished fics, because I know what I'm like 😆. It's really really lovely though, so thank you for the recommendation.

BeBraveLittlePenguin · 21/05/2024 14:36

Ha, you're ours now Grin Yes it is utterly beautiful, and yes she updates painfully slowly. Worth it though. We reckon there will be another one this week or next. Apparently she has written the whole thing already but she just takes forever tweaking. The difference is marked though - with so many fic writers you just want the story edited, so much waffle. Hers though <chef's kiss>

I haven't forgotten my offer of recommendations, just been flat out today. I will come back later much like a dealer opening his raincoat to display the temptations therein...

TriceratopsRocks · 21/05/2024 14:54

Thank you. No hurry as I still have plenty of others to work through. And I may go back to Nervousjester for a bit. Now there's another truly excellent writer who's fics I just have to keep re-reading.

TriceratopsRocks · 21/05/2024 15:00

The big question is, will I ever read anything again that isn't Ed and Stede fan fiction? I mean, "probably not" is the answer to that right now 🤣. I have other books sitting unread because all I can think about is these two. I am very much looking forward to seeing the inside of your raincoat, when you have had time to fill its pockets with delights 🙂

I also worry that I will never read anything but Good Omens and OFMD fanfic again. If anyone is looking to take a break from OFMD in the Good Omens universe, I really like this one, or at least the first few chapters of it (copious smut, original characters, based on Neil Gaiman telling a fan at a comic con that Aziraphale and Crowley now share a cottage on the South Downs)

And obviously everyone should feel free to keep posting additional OFMD recs as I have already burned through the ones posted so far 😳

Oh wow. Hope you came out the other side in one piece. And I hope you are off somewhere nice 😀. Perhaps don't read the sequel yet if you are actually wanting to have a good time in RL!

This is an absolute gift @BeBraveLittlePenguin- thank you so much! Many, many tempting things and having your comment rather than the title is actually really helpful.

😀It's a favourite scene, and 'I'm folding stuff, and that's OK' is a pretty good mantra for when things feel a bit much.
