Remember the shock win by Finland 18yrs back, heavy metal, tune lol Shows you can rarely predict with eurovision

That was before the vote system changed though.

PuppyMonkey · 12/05/2024 21:32

Good God, not Rod Stewart and Paul McCartney FFS. Grin

Would Beverley Knight or one of those seasoned West End performers have a go maybe?

I was thinking maybe someone with musical theatre chops could be good. Jade Ewen and Lucie Jones did alright. Beverley is a powerhouse.

I just watched back a bit of the signed BBC coverage out of absolute idle curiosity and it's really fascinating. Music signing is always interesting to watch because there's such a strong interpretative element to it - the interpreter isn't just putting across the words but also the beat and general vibe. But here they're also interpreting all the presenter bits and the Graham bits. They'd divided the task between several interpreters who clearly had rehearsed and fully memorized the songs they were each interpreting. So one minute they're making a sarcastic Graham comment and then they're straight into proper performance and spot on with it. Very skilled people!

Riverlee · 12/05/2024 22:07

@tarnishedhalo i think I’m almost as shocked that that was 18 years ago!

Our problem this year was a) song which was ok but not amazing b) staging a priority over everything else c) too much artistic control given to Olly Alexander who wanted gay gay gay without thought to the audience being broad and also family orientated which is dumb for the televote d) dance routine which affected Olly's vocals knowing technicality is on of the things the judges look for.

I'm watching now on catch up and had to put my PIN in to watch. That says something. It's supposed to be family watching but it's requiring a pin ?

MrsTerryPratchett · 12/05/2024 22:33

Camp, kitsch and colourful could work for the huge gay following and for children. Olly was more gritty and artistic, and that might work for the gay following but is not going to work for children.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 13/05/2024 00:15

I always thought Sophie Ellis Bextor would do well at Eurovision

GeorgeOrwellsTurningGrave · 13/05/2024 00:25

I'd like to see Hannah Waddingham in the hot seat. Great vocals, presence, personality and a musical theatre background.

This is NOT Oasis, Paul McCartney or most of the abuse who are GREAT live performers but vocally not great. They have charisma but not technically.

Maneskin did. There's your difference.

Whilst I LOVE Indie/Rock singers tend not to be pitch perfect.

Tbh I just don't care enough to debate this, I think Eurovision has been a crock of shite for years and I'm surprised that people on here seem to be so passionate about it, fair play to them. I ff'ed most of Saturday's show so can't comment (bet none of the acts were my idea of quality like Moody Blues, Blur, Meatloaf, Foo Fighters, Oasis or Lordi though) The music's not to my taste so I ain't the target audience. Outta here 🖐😎

RedToothBrush · 12/05/2024 18:54

Or we could actually pick a good song and not go over board with the staging and instead focus on the song.

Novel idea.

Like the year the UK sent a minicab driver on a kebab break to wander onto the stage by mistake, and just stand there in a brown vinyl jacket...

I think this is your problem though!

You aren't the target audience. You are unlikely to vote.

I am a massive Eurovision fan. I'm also a massive Indie/Rock fan. I totally appreciate someone whose vocals aren't technically great but convey massive of emotion.

They are totally different markets. And you have to be aware of how the Eurovision scoring works.

You can't just send someone who hasn't got technical ability to Eurovision. Not when there will be a massive contrast to the other acts.

The jury vote is half of the scoring. The televote is half of the scoring.

Both are important.

Neither can be neglected.

Olly Alexander lost sight of this and that's been our biggest problem this year. This song should have scored higher. But zero on the public vote was predictable with the staging.

Lord no. Not Rod Stewart! No bygones who can't really sing anymore! Did we not learn from Englebert Humperdinck

That was a great entry - even if just for the name. Every time I said ‘Englebert Humberdinck’ my son collapsed into howls of laughter.

I was the one to suggest Paul McCartney and I am a HUGE Eurovision fan and always vote, I am absolutely the target audience so this point doesn't track.

Yeah, wtaf was that all about. May as well have sent Barry from eastenders.

Pixiesgirl · 13/05/2024 11:21

Go and listen to Paul McCartney then, he would not win eurovision quite obviously.

HelloDenise · 15/05/2024 23:57

I've been watching this tonight, I missed it over the weekend. What the hell has happened?

That Bambie Thug performance was absolute garbage and she needs therapy.

Ollie Alexander's staging was dreadful and he sounded like he was singing underwater. I like him and the song but just no to performance that looks like it's in condemned men's toilets. The guy can sing, too. What a farce.

It's a bloody song contest not a shock contest and sexualised performances and those looking like a horror show have no place.

It's all emperor's new clothes because presenters are frightened of looking intolerant.

nightmaries · 16/05/2024 09:23

Can I interest you lot in Bambie Thug’s censored version of “Birthday”? I am very sorry that the original version is only available on porn sites but I present to you the censored version here.

pure musical talent isn’t it?

Ooh isn’t she cool and edgy 🙄

For someone who comes off as super righteous I’m surprised she is part of an industry that funds terrorism and sex trafficking of women and children

Actually, if the UK nations had separate entries, I could see him turning up for Scotland.

Whilst living in Essex. I don't think he has lived regularly in Scotland since he was very young.

Occasionally entries have tried using "big names" but the audience votes don't always like it - recognised but not "big" seems to play better. The contest is supposed to be about the songs, even if they get lost in all the stuff around the contest.

HelloDenise · 17/05/2024 23:11

I don't like the filmic appearance of the show either.
