Paul McCartney is a living legend but cannot sing these days. Rick Astley is still doing his thing well though, he was brilliant at Glastonbury. Saying he'd "wipe the floor" with very competent, professional, modern acts just because he's a British golden oldie is nonsense though.

It's Eurovision, not a samey concert at Buckingham Palace. You have to be forward looking and forward thinking to thrive, not just "oh this slightly misogynist old dude sold loads of records in the 70s, let's send him and his leggy blonde dancers and wipe the floor with Italy's best selling contemporary singers". It ain't gonna work.

Edited

I saw Paul at Glastonbury a few years ago he was spectacular, his voice is as good as ever. had the crowd going wild. he would be fabulous

AprilDecember · 12/05/2024 19:41

He's (Rod) also a very stale performer, so inviting him would be insane.

Paul McCartney has had some shockers of live performances, he's not a reliable enough vocalist for a competition. He's suitable for "legend closing the Olympics with a sing along" or "festival where people have happily paid to see you". But not to be judged against much more competent, stronger vocalists with modern songs and performances.

SwedishEdith · 12/05/2024 19:43

The key to winning is a strong powerful controlled vocalist who is reliable in a big arena. That's the minimum requirement and we failed at that for the last 2 years. I'd never heard of Sam Ryder until he was chosen so no way will it be anyone on my radar now.

This.

Ditto. Oasis / Blur

Liam's vocals and performance would get totally mauled by the jury! (I've seen Oasis MANY MANY times, and even back before he fucked his voice he wouldn't have got many 12s for his technical ability).

This is why we do badly, because we start going 'oh we should send someone who is popular in the uk rather than someone who is an excellent performer with amazing technical ability.

What have Barbara Pravi, Slimane, Gjons Tears, Nemo, Sam Ryder, Duncan Lawrence, Cochita Wurst, Cornelia Jakobs, Soldi all got in common?

Really. This. Is. Not. Hard.

RunningAndSinging · 12/05/2024 19:43

Maybe send a male voice choir singing in Welsh next year. Or have a competition like other countries do.

Oh wow I actually think a male voice choir is a beautiful idea! But you can only have 6 people max on stage.

I've seen a LOT of bands. When I saw Paul McCartney, I can honestly say I thought he was utterly dreadful. Cringe worthy in his manner and style.

This is Eurovision.

Who do you think the audience are?!

We should be looking to rock/metal bands for showmanship and strong, reliable live vocals.

Sir Tom Jones even!

MrsTerryPratchett · 12/05/2024 19:48

Please not an octogenarian from the halcyon days of British music. Voices do get worse over time and it shows in a live performance.

Someone who can flawlessly sing, belt it out, live, to a large crowd is essential and the UK entries from the last two years, they just couldn't. Not like Italy or Cypress.

The UK has an incredible music tradition and we should try to showcase that. Not that Bob Vylan is going to risk his brand on this!

PossumintheHouse · 12/05/2024 19:04

Has anyone talked about the Swedish twin effort yet? It just didn't work, did it?

Unforgettable was quite the most forgettable song

not sure - but I quite enjoyed most of them. agree oasis and blur would be dreadful, no talent whatsoever

What was quirky and choreographed about Duncan Laurence and his piano ballad? I think sedate can still win! ( I'm still salty about Mahmood not winning but I appreciated Arcade about a year later).

I think different things can capture people each year, you never know! Toy, Arcade, Zitti e Buoni, Stefania and Tattoo couldn't be more different from eachother but all won.

This is NOT Oasis, Paul McCartney or most of the abuse who are GREAT live performers but vocally not great. They have charisma but not technically.

Maneskin did. There's your difference.

Whilst I LOVE Indie/Rock singers tend not to be pitch perfect.

Yes Arcade is beautiful and he performed it perfectly. I was just Team Mahmood so I was upset on the night! But he was a deserving winner.

Violetparis · 12/05/2024 20:07

A basic requirement is someone who is good singing live in an arena. We couldn't even manage that this year. I wasn't surprised by the nil points from the public jury at all.

Persipan · 12/05/2024 20:18

The other thing Sam Ryder did - on top of being a really excellent singer and having infectious puppyish enthusiasm - was to embark on a big publicity push across the voting countries to try and build excitement about the song (particularly targeting smaller countries, with the reasoning that their votes are worth just as much as larger countries but you can get publicity proportionately more easily in, say, Malta than in France). I can't see a big established act having the time or inclination to put that level of work in, to be honest. Even just logistically, if you're Paul McCartney you have other calls on your time.

Riverlee · 12/05/2024 20:18

Lenoftheglen · 12/05/2024 19:13

It was 2 hours ahead of UK time for me so I have only just watched it - alongside my eurovision super fan dd.

I had heard UK's entry on the radio and found it catchy and upbeat..

But that performance was embarrassing and sleazy. His vocals were bad too. Shame as the song isn't bad at all.

We really enjoyed Finland as it appealed to my 10 year olds sense of humour.

I agree, on the radio, Dizzy isn’t too bad, and has grown on since I first heard it. But the performance and staging on the night wasn’t good.

Riverlee · 12/05/2024 20:23

We used to have a contest which went by various names, including ‘Song For Europe’. The last winner I can recall was Scoon(?) who were dressed as air hotesses .

We’ve also had well known singers - Michael Ball, (came seconds), Engelbert Humperdinck etc

You mean Scooch.

They did this for Eurovision this year...

There was a public vote for the UK entry for most years up to 2019. From James Newman in 2020 onwards it's been internal selection

tarnishedhalo · 12/05/2024 21:00

Remember the shock win by Finland 18yrs back, heavy metal, tune lol Shows you can rarely predict with eurovision
