This will be my 12th Doctor. I’m a big Doctor Who fan. Happy memories of Sat with my dad watching cyber men and darleks.
But what the hell has happened? I’ve just finished, well I managed 25 mins, before I couldn’t take it anymore the 1st episode with the new Doctor and sidekick. Awful acting with a ludicrous plot (yes I know it’s fantasy) but it’s never been this stupid. Can’t help but think the BBC aren’t bothered and think they can put out anything and we’ll watch. Russell T Davies should have his pens taken off him and spare us anymore pain.

I can’t be the only Doctor Who fan who thinks like this. Absolutely Gutted 😞

Something was or had to be 66 metres away (I can't remember what now, bloody age). Is that close enough given rounding to be 73 yards?

merryhouse · 15/06/2024 23:01

Also, we all thought that the cloud when it first appeared looked like the Beast in The Satan Pit

which brings up the interesting question of whether RTD had the reappearance of Sutekh in mind way back then?

(I'm just a bit giddy that I actually realised who Sutekh was without having to be reminded)

merryhouse · 15/06/2024 23:05

aaaaaand the music when things starting Getting Heavy went back to a particular theme

I can't remember what it was now but I thought at the time that it's maybe the Master's theme though I could be completely wrong

Mrs Flood being the Master would be a bit weird? I'm almost certainly completely wrong. Standing looking at things about to descend into chaos and being torn between glee and anguish (with a side order of wanting the best sound-bite) is very Master-ish

Did enjoy it. Looking forward to seeing how everytbing ties together but still feel this season had been too short and doesn't feel to me anyway that Ncuti Doctor has got going yet..doesn't help a few episodes been slightly iffy in this short season

Hopefully next season though

merryhouse · 15/06/2024 23:09

Now I've been reminded of the quote There is a tide in the affairs of men which taken at the flood leads on to fortune

I suspect this is not relevant

merryhouse · 15/06/2024 23:22

oh and I've loved reading this thread, so many lovely ideas. On the steps thing: there's been a total dearth of discussion on why the Abbey Road crossing suddenly started playing notes on the way back to the Tardis. It was a really odd thing to do and nobody's picked up on it. (even the characters just shrugged and moved on, like it was a Christmas Special or something)

OccasionalHope · 15/06/2024 23:31

Surely denying the old lady a drink is a sign Mrs F is evil?

UrsulaBelle · 15/06/2024 23:37

I’m such a geek, I have the Pyramids of Mars story on DVD when Sutekh was first voiced by Gabriel Woolf. I’m going to have to rewatch it. Tom Baker and Elizabeth Sladen as Sarah-Jane.

thecatsthecats · 15/06/2024 23:44

I wonder if Sutekh's taunt about "you thought we were family" is ironic, if the Doctor himself is some lesser being of the Pantheon?

Either way, I guess Ruby's mother abandoned her as she needed to be left at that moment to prevent Sutekh. Crackpot theory is that Ruby is Susan, and the Doctor couldn't see her mother because he can't see her yet.

(Though Ten said to Donna that he'd been a father before...}

OccasionalHope · 15/06/2024 23:57

Is it definite that the person abandoning Ruby even is her mother?

I have wondered this

JaninaDuszejko · 16/06/2024 07:01

In the Egyptian myth Sutekh murdered his brother ad his wife Isis cried so much the Nile flooded. I agree Mrs Flood is evil for not giving the drink OR she's protecting Ruby's granny somehow from the snow/tears/flood. Who knows, I'm completely confused😁

In Unleashed RTD said he enjoyed all the fan theories so I suspect he's putting in a few red herrings for us. In other news my teenagers are discovered the joy of delayed gratification and are now saying they wished Stranger Things was released week by week so they could enjoy all this type of speculation online. I have been telling them this for years.

Why was the soldier in the simulator armed? What did he expect to shoot at? I was amused at him walking around the memory pointing his gun at things that already happened in 2004.

Ha good point, although as it turns out he was right to be worried… not that it did him much good 😂

SheilaFentiman · 16/06/2024 08:09

Don’t look too closely at the Time Window thing… why was there only one scientist (Morris) whizzing back and forth when they were doing brand new science with it??

I watched it on iplayer, really good with Sarah Jane and the mummies

In the WH 60s series didn't Susan get left in London in the future trying to rebuild it, where has she been all this time?

Was simpler when DWs companion was a journalist or scientist with no back story😀

UrsulaBelle · 16/06/2024 10:09

I wasn’t around for the first Doctor, (can just about remember Patrick Troughton) but he wasn’t a Time Lord, didn’t regenerate etc, originally. He was just mysterious. The rest of it developed as it went along. So having to retro-explain a granddaughter now is tricky!

PuttingDownRoots · 16/06/2024 10:15

Apparently they made her hos granddaughter to make it seemed "decent" an old man travelled around with a young girl.

KomproMatilda · 16/06/2024 10:51

Susan - everything: (a prize for anyone who can get through all this, I certainly can’t!)

In reality, this character was originally to have been a princess saved from a planet which wasn't the same world as the Doctor came from.[1] Thereafter, she was envisioned as a fugitive from the Doctor's home planet. It was Anthony Coburn who altered the character so that Susan became the Doctor's granddaughter, instead of being a biologically unrelated female teenager travelling with an old man. (The Tribe of Gum (script), "Doctor Who – The Beginning")

Planet (An Unearthly Child)

The original home planet of the Doctor and Susan (TV: "An Unearthly Child" [+]Part of An Unearthly Child, Anthony Coburn, adapted from The Pilot Episode (Anthony Coburn), Doctor Who season 1 (BBC tv, 1963).) was unclear due to the Doctor's shifting tim...

I went to the old BBC site for the 70s Sutekh serial https://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/classic/episodeguide/pyramidsmars/] and clicked on the "original paperwork" link, and discovered that one of the contestants on the episode of The Generation Game that aired the same night as episode 3 of the serial was called Sue Foreman 😱😁 Spoooooky…

AprilPoisson · 16/06/2024 11:41

I mean...the whole Susan Twist thing is equally coincidinks. watch out for the Goblin King If the actress didn't have an older IMDb I'd have thought she'd deed poll/changed her name with Equity for Russell on purpose, just for the song tie-in.
Did RTD commission There's always a Twist at the end after she was cast or did he search the database for an actor with that surname?! Grin

KomproMatilda · 16/06/2024 11:46

I think he intimated in Unleashed that he already knew her, and then realised her name provided an excellent opportunity to do something novel with Who storytelling.

SheilaFentiman · 16/06/2024 11:49

The twist at the end worked with the dancing, I suspect Russ T liked the chance to double down though!

AprilPoisson · 16/06/2024 11:51

I've read all sorts of theories on reddit when it comes to Ruby's parentage and who is leaving her at the Church. I won't repeat them here just in case but I hope the pay-off is good as at the moment I am bewildered by it all.
Also - death or not - am not sure why Egyptian God is the Biggest Bad this year.
Not sure I like mixing up gods like that tbh. I'm a bit OCD. Either have them all as archetypes, use all the Egyptian ones or Norse ones or myths or what have you, but don't be mixing them up!
So, RTD needs to be tying up
~ the salt/mavity thing
~ Mrs Flood's identity/whose side she's on (She's the Biggest Bad Brew-depriver)
~ Ruby's mum/dad/caped person and why Ruby can make it snow
~ Granddaughter Susan/dead children at some point
~ Why Carla referred to Suteck as Beast
~ When Suteck took over the Tardis/how they placed chrysalis-Su everywhere
~If Ruby was the old woman at 73 yards: whether there is a link between her and the evil tardis being at 73 yards Confused
The soldier girl coming series 2 - is she in addition to Ruby or replacing her as Ruby? Do those with TimeLord power/Tardis energy/relatives of the Doctor sometimes regenerate to a face they've met irl previously?
