Doctor Who

This will be my 12th Doctor. I’m a big Doctor Who fan. Happy memories of Sat with my dad watching cyber men and darleks.
But what the hell has happened? I’ve just finished, well I managed 25 mins, before I couldn’t take it anymore the 1st episode with the new Doctor and sidekick. Awful acting with a ludicrous plot (yes I know it’s fantasy) but it’s never been this stupid. Can’t help but think the BBC aren’t bothered and think they can put out anything and we’ll watch. Russell T Davies should have his pens taken off him and spare us anymore pain.

I can’t be the only Doctor Who fan who thinks like this. Absolutely Gutted 😞

I also disagree with a pp: I thought there was chemistry between the two leads.
Am now spaceshipping them <3 Wink

PuttingDownRoots · 09/06/2024 17:30

Pitting aside the "realistic" debate re Race in the regency period...

That felt more like proper Dr Who.

AprilPoisson · 09/06/2024 17:48

Good review from Elizabeth Sandifer again. Thanks for the link.
I don't agree with her ranking though.

  1. Dot and Bubble
  2. Boom
  3. Rogue
  4. The Devil’s Chord
  5. Space Babies
  6. 73 Yards

Mine is

  1. Rogue
  2. The Devil's Chord
  3. Boom
  4. 73 yards
  5. Dot and Bubble
  6. Space Babies

I'm a basic bitch though, who's a sucker for camp and romance.
Looking forward to seeing Lenny Rush next week (from AIBU with Daisy May Cooper). He was going to be voicing a Space Baby then RTD realised he'd be great as a more prominent part later in the series according to the Unleashed commentary.

Sewannoying · 09/06/2024 17:58

I like to idea of ranking them. Mine would be:

  1. Boom
  2. Dot and Bubble
  3. 73 yards
  4. Rogue
  5. The Devil’s Chord
  6. Space Babies

I felt Rogue was too forced. There really wasn’t time for them to build a connection. However, I may have to got back and watch the lip syncing bit…

I'd second this.

73 yards and Dot and Bubble both had great stuff let down by gaping plot holes, with the former being much better in its high points. Rogue and Boom were more consistent, with the former being better (More Kate Herron please).

Devils Chord was OK. Space Babies was barely adequate.

i think. I may have to rewatch them after the series finishes as I am still hoping we’ll have to go back to go “oh yes, how did I not see that!!”

BritishBeatleMania · 09/06/2024 19:06

I’m at “Silence In The Library” on my rewatch. I love this story.

Oh me too!

PuttingDownRoots · 09/06/2024 19:19

Silence of the Library is so different after seeing the whole River arc. I wonder if she was planned to be so big?

BritishBeatleMania · 09/06/2024 19:21

I know. I assume they must have planned to use her more than this episode because of the notebook. It’s such a focus and opened up the whole of their story.

I assume that if Alex Kingston's performance hadn't worked for viewers, or if she'd been cast as a lead in a huge US show and unavailable for future work then they'd have left it there. But I'm sure Moffat had the arc sketched out in his head from the start.

KomproMatilda · 09/06/2024 19:32

Gosh, Silence in the Library and Forest of the Dead are still on such a different level to most of what we’ve seen recently - in terms of storytelling and complexity and the level of audience engagement required.

I hope NG will get some episodes or a story arc as excellent as that. So far only 73 Yards has truly intrigued me. Rogue was lovely, Boom at least tried, Dot and Bubble - game of two halves, Space Babies a shameful waste of Golda Rosheuvel. I can’t even bear to think of the execrable Devil’s Chord.

BTW have you all seen the gobsmacking cast list for Steven Moffat’s new ITV drama ‘Douglas is Cancelled’?

Wow. Impressive list!

Rummikub · 09/06/2024 20:00

Well I enjoyed that! All of it.
Including the chemistry between the doctor and Rogue.

Why did he say he can't when given the ring?

Ponderingwindow · 08/06/2024 18:30

Rogue could be jack, but I think it’s more likely to be a new character to with a similar spirit. With the reset it seems more likely they picked up an opportunity to create someone new. Plus d&d dice do not scream Jack Harkness. This rake has a nerdier side that lets us identify with him even more and place ourselves in his shoes.

I thought captain jack vibes too.

I think because the Doctor can’t really commit romantically because, well, everybody dies.

BritishBeatleMania · 09/06/2024 07:24

Have you watched Bridgerton? The whole point of that series of books / TV is based on the idea the King George married Queen Charlotte, and Charlotte was black. As such, regency England in that series doesn’t have limitations on societal roles by race because the king made marrying across race, and so sharing your lives across race, acceptable and society embraced it.

if you also watch the series about Charlotte and George starting out you find out it was still a fight to get there in that universe but one that succeeded.

As a PP said, by placing an episode so firmly in the world of another series you risk the fact that many people watching your series won’t have watched the other!

I’ve not watched Bridgerton but I loved it anyway.

Good point. I didn’t know if it was because he was still grieving another.

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 09/06/2024 21:09

I loved it. Favourite episode in a long time, although I did like the Toy Maker too. Jonathan Groff makes everything he touches better. Love Ncuti, but haven't liked a single episode on his own until this one. They need better writing and fewer dance routines and babies.

As an aside the most annoying thing to me is that now it is showing to Americans, all the measurements are in imperial. Surely Ruby would use metres instead? I grew up with them and I am middle aged! The only time I see yards is on a road sign counting down to roadworks.

Oh. I thought it was because technically he is still married to River. Okay she's only a cyber copy and the original is dead Jim, even so...

MrsToddsShortcut · 09/06/2024 22:39

AprilPoisson My DS was really surprised by the snog. He said 'I don't care that they're blokes, but he's married!
