This will be my 12th Doctor. I’m a big Doctor Who fan. Happy memories of Sat with my dad watching cyber men and darleks.
But what the hell has happened? I’ve just finished, well I managed 25 mins, before I couldn’t take it anymore the 1st episode with the new Doctor and sidekick. Awful acting with a ludicrous plot (yes I know it’s fantasy) but it’s never been this stupid. Can’t help but think the BBC aren’t bothered and think they can put out anything and we’ll watch. Russell T Davies should have his pens taken off him and spare us anymore pain.

I can’t be the only Doctor Who fan who thinks like this. Absolutely Gutted 😞

Naively optimistic for tomorrow's episode. Series 1 of Loki was so good, and so Doctor Who. My only fear is that Kate Herron, RTD and Moffat in the same writers' room may make it inevitable that the Doctor goes back in time and snogs himself.

Oooh does it literally come out at midnight?!

Yes - that threw me last week when I was still talking about 73 Yards on the Saturday, not Dot and Bubble 😀

I have to remember not to look at this thread tomorrow because sure of those people who watch - and comment - on the new episode as soon as it "drops".

beguilingeyes · 07/06/2024 22:29

They should really get Richard Curtis to write some more Who.

Yes. I always forget not to look - it's really annoying!

Foggyfield · 08/06/2024 01:18

I think this was my final attempt to watch.

This series just isn't the fun sci-fi show we used to sit down and watch as a family anymore. The writing feels phoned in, I don't really care about the characters I'm supposed to.

I hope others will continue to enjoy it.

We are just going to rewatch the classic/new who up to a certain point on our family nights.

I’ve just rewatched the Van Gogh episode. I found the ending really raw and emotional, shed more than a few tears. Anyone else?

This is one of my favourites! I always cry at the bit when they take Van Gogh to the gallery to see his art and he hears Bill Nighy talking about how important his art is and how many people he inspired. Then at the end when Amy goes back and she finds out that he still killed himself despite everything that had happened. Karen Gillan was fantastic in that episode. Dr Who at its best 👌

I grab the tissues when I get to that episode in a rewatch. The end has me sobbing every time.

I’ve watched today’s offering but will hang fire posting until a more sensible hour! Don’t want to put anyone else’s watching at risk 🤣

KomproMatilda · 08/06/2024 10:17

👍 or 👎, @BritishBeatleMania?

Kianai · 08/06/2024 10:39

👎 for me I'm afraid.

Also giving up now.

Can I do a so so shaky hand for now and explain why later? 🤣🫳

I didn’t absolutely love it but I didn’t hate it!

8misskitty8 · 08/06/2024 14:45

I loved the episode and thought it was one of the best of the season.
Although certain ‘critics’ will have an issue with it.
I really like Ncuti as the doctor and I’ve seen all the doctors and he’s already one of my favourites.

BritishBeatleMania · 08/06/2024 15:48

Most of my disappointment with this episode was that we didn’t get a lot of Ruby and the Doctor together which I think has been missing a bit this series.

However, I really liked the premise. We had a new alien, a recognisable location, great costume, and Jonathan Groff! It felt fun and entertaining.

They had Ncuti crying again…I’m wondering if that’s tied into the Twist connection as well as it’s almost exactly the same imagery in each episode. I’m actually interested in seeing what they are aiming for in tying up the series, which feels good.

We’re starting to see some repetition I think. Rogue gave off a Captain Jack vibe. The Bridgestone setting felt a little like The Girl In The Fireplace in setting tone. If you’ve watched all of Dr Who you’re bound to see parallels and comparisons.

SheilaFentiman · 08/06/2024 15:54

“If you’ve watched all of Dr Who you’re bound to see parallels and comparisons.”

Yeah… I guess because there are only so many stories and so many “visual tags” of eras to visit - posh party would also cover the Agatha Christie episode, albeit 100+ years later than Rogue vs 100-50 years earlier of The Girl in the Fireplace.

SheilaFentiman · 08/06/2024 15:54

I loved this episode.

BritishBeatleMania · 08/06/2024 15:59

Oops. Bridgestone tyres have no need to be in a post about doctor who. I obviously meant Bridgerton but seem to be too late to edit!

SheilaFentiman · 08/06/2024 16:13

This is a great review (spoilers, obviously)

Love this line - @BritishBeatleMania

He’s Captain Jack Harkness without… well, without the John Barrowman of it all, really

Pieceofpurplesky · 08/06/2024 16:15

@BritishBeatleMania we thought that the travelling companion he mentioned may have been Captain Jack ...

I am loving it. Purists will hate it but Ncuti is fast becoming one of my favourites.

BritishBeatleMania · 08/06/2024 16:18

Oh that’s an interesting thought @Pieceofpurplesky. For a minute I did wonder if he could be River Song regenerated. But decided that was a step too far 🤣

Edited

Didn’t River give up all her regenerations to save Eleven, though?

Yeah. But I can’t remember every detail when I’m on the middle of an episode and they have a habit of changing all lore on a dime. (Number of doctor regenerations…) Anyway, I did decide I was being daft.

Ha, true!

<side eyes The Timeless Child nonsense>

MissTrip82 · 08/06/2024 18:03

Great episode. Loved the romantic angle that was really well done. A good villain. Funny.

I wish we had more episodes this season though, I want to see the doctor and Ruby’s relationship grow.
