This will be my 12th Doctor. I’m a big Doctor Who fan. Happy memories of Sat with my dad watching cyber men and darleks.
But what the hell has happened? I’ve just finished, well I managed 25 mins, before I couldn’t take it anymore the 1st episode with the new Doctor and sidekick. Awful acting with a ludicrous plot (yes I know it’s fantasy) but it’s never been this stupid. Can’t help but think the BBC aren’t bothered and think they can put out anything and we’ll watch. Russell T Davies should have his pens taken off him and spare us anymore pain.

I can’t be the only Doctor Who fan who thinks like this. Absolutely Gutted 😞

Why did I thank S. Moffat above? This is an RTD episode!

KomproMatilda · 25/05/2024 20:00

And amazing timing! All I’ve seen on TV today is sport and politics.

Please can someone explain what that was about

The Doctor steps on a fairy ring and disappears

Separated from the doctor, Ruby is unable to move on with her life. As she is dying her dying self becomes the woman who has never strayed 73 yards from her. I think both this space and what she whispered will be significant going forward.

This time she warns herself and eradicates the entire timeline

I doubt it's the last we've seen of Roger Ap Gwilliam

If I've got it wrong feel free to correct me.

I thought the lack of explanation about what was being whispered was poor.
Why would she send her own mum away? What would that achieve?
Where did the doctor go?
I feel I should know this but who was Marty and what was her relevance?

Annoying.

Why would she send her Mum away ?

To compound her isolation so that all she really has is her memory of being his companion. Like her only happiness.

She delighted in contacting UNIT, but immediately lost them.

TryingToSeeTheFunnySide · 25/05/2024 20:21

I really enjoyed today's new episode. My favourite of the new series so far.

Rummikub · 25/05/2024 20:38

I cried at that! As soon as it timed to 40 years later and she went back to the tardis 😢

And when she said everyone abandons her.

watching unleashed now to find out what was whispered.

PuttingDownRoots · 25/05/2024 20:39

I really liked that.

Rummikub · 25/05/2024 20:45

Unleashed says this was the first episode filmed. When Millie was just 18.

thecatsthecats · 25/05/2024 20:51

I loved that. And I don't think Who is going all magical.

Kate said that they were dealing more and more with the supernatural these days with UNIT. I think that the Toymaker/Maestro/Fairies stuff is all connected.

I was excited to see Sian Philips of I Claudius. She's so beautiful.

(And I said to DH, Welsh people will be outraged at this, but I have had exactly those experiences in Wales. Down to the cheeky piss taking.)

Rummikub · 25/05/2024 20:53

Kaye also mentioned wearing necklaces with salt in silver.

Rummikub · 25/05/2024 20:53

Very good episode

Reminded me of blink in a way

Pastelbuttercream · 25/05/2024 20:58

Please can someone explain that episode?

-what was she whispering?
-why did the people scream and run?
-where did the doctor go?
-how did she manage to go back and see herself from a distance as she didn’t have the doctor’s help as an old woman
-what was the significance of Mad Jack?
-what was the significance of the brunette who laughed with her on the football pitch?

thecatsthecats · 25/05/2024 21:13

Oh, and American Werewolf! Big vibes of that in the first scenes.

Rummikub · 25/05/2024 21:17

In the pub scenes?

Written by a Welshman though...

I think that a lot of these things are to be determined and hopefully will be revealed in time.

For DD (11yo) who is working her way through the Whoniverse... has anyone watched the spin off "Class" and knows if it would be suitable for her? I've watched 15 minutes, heard one swear word. She doesn't mind a bit of peril. (But doesn't like "relationship" sort of stuff).

No, Class is a 15 at least, IMO. Sarah Jane Adventures would work.

SheilaFentiman · 25/05/2024 21:36

I enjoyed episode 4/73 Yards. Though the ending was really rushed.

This!

SheilaFentiman · 25/05/2024 21:46

Marti laughed because Roger - who we assume harassed or assaulted her - was made to run off like a cowardly idiot.

The other questions - dunno!

Rummikub · 25/05/2024 21:46

on unleashed the actor explains what she’s saying in the distance.
bless you, thank you, how can I repay you.

but no clue as to what was said when people ran away.

PuttingDownRoots · 25/05/2024 21:53

Was she speaking sign language?

SheilaFentiman · 25/05/2024 22:10

RTD says in Unleashed that he wants people to fill in the blanks of the horrible word themselves.

Mad Jack was what Roger was called as a child/teen - so hearing it made Ruby plan a mission to stop Roger starting nuclear war. She thought that might have been the woman’s mission for her.

Steven Moffat is such a great writer, I can’t think of a duff episode written by him. “Blink” and “Heaven Sent” are the two stand out episodes from post-2005 Doctor Who, IMO.

Heaven sent is an amazing episode! Amazing to watch Peter Capaldi carrying the whole episode. What an actor and it’s beautifully written
