I thought the servant’s orangey makeup and dark eyebrows made her look too modern.
There was no way one man could dig and then fill up that grave either. Loved the lady of the house’s dresses.

I thought this too!! I wondered if it was purposely done for some reason.

I used to be an extra, and worked on period dramas. I've got naturally curly hair and they always tucked it under a bonnet or did something horrid with it as the style 'looked too modern' There was once an argument between costume and make up about it!

Agree with this. The plot twist was really obvious.

The jokes and euphemisms got on my wick a bit as they were peppered throughout the first 10 mins. I feel I'm being harsh, but such are the high expectations of this final series. (And I can understand why they want to bow out themselves at this point)

I don't know who the other cast members are. I did see the names at the end, but I'm not familiar with them. Mind, I don't actually watch all that much TV just the stuff I obsess about

Natalie Dormer, Hayley Squires and Eddie Marsan

Yeah i love the Christmas ghost stories, I absolutely love the bones of St. Nicholas. There was a show on Bbc4 on Christmas Eve past, it wasn't an Inside No 9, I think it was called the Mummy's curse? Freddie Fox was in it, it was excellent, felt very No 9 like.

Mark Gatiss wrote it so that makes sense!

I'm going to be bereft when this ends.

Me too Sad

Evolutionarygoals · 06/06/2024 23:14

Thoroughly enjoyed this episode. Something odd about the way it was filmed though. Reminded me of those old BBC Play for Today type things. At one point Natalie Dormer character said something about the middle part of the symphony being flat and I thought it was a good description of the filming style.
Was the structure supposed to mimic that of a symphony? You start with the theme (horror with the creepy supernatural murder), then there's a bit of messing about (the weird innuendos), variations on the theme (more horror but this time it's grave robbing, actual murder etc) then back to the original theme with the ghoul offing ND. I'll admit I don't really know enough about music to know if this is plausible or just me overthinking

I didn't like this one 😔 I absolutely loved last week's though

Cosmosforbreakfast · 07/06/2024 09:42

I liked it but didn't love it. I found the style unusual, as if the characters weren't quite supposed to fit in with the surroundings. Nice little twist.

I felt like the characters were deliberately awkward, like a French farce or Am Dram.

Do they still talk about it on the podcast?

Reece says on X that its his new favourite episode. I see it's been announced that he's also part of the new Wallace and Gromit film coming out this Christmas.

Yes , when you see the calbre of the actors , the fact they are looking awkward is deliberate .

It's like The Spirit of Krampus , they look like they're part of a 1970s episode of Crossroads .

Tarkan · 07/06/2024 11:19

I was waiting on something a bit more from this one. I had had a couple of glasses of wine to be fair but I was really hoping for a vampire or zombie story when they dug up the grave. BlushGrin

Iamiams · 07/06/2024 11:34

I was debating whether the vampire was the servant because of the dark eyebrows! But she seemed too short for the glimpses we got.

I think you're right and they're clever enough to put little hidden gems in the show like that.

Yes, I also agree that the tempo was likely meant to match that of an actual symphony. It was perhaps further illustrated by the orchestral music building to a crescendo and marking the end of both the piece and play.

I miss the podcast, they stopped after series 7.

I ended up listening to all the League of Gentlemen and Psychoville commentaries after last series. I now have a lot of very niche knowledge that I can’t do anything with (apart from irritating my family Blush)

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 07/06/2024 21:11

Next week is the last episode ......

No preview available . Anyone know who is Guest Starring ?

I know but it's a bit spoilery to tell you 😅

TellyUsername · 07/06/2024 21:28

We need a "hide spoilers" function.

Iamiams · 07/06/2024 21:31

Why are there not 9 episodes?

Ooh what are these, I'm missing the podcast too!

OutOfTheHouse · 08/06/2024 21:02

I really liked that one. Very MR James. DH knew the piano was a Bechstein piano before they said!

Why are there not 9 episodes?

They're all 6 in a series , except the Live Hallowe'en one ( DeadLine) which was a stand alone .

It would've been great if they could've stretched this series to 9 episodes as it's the last one .

I'd love a PM if you're willing to do so, as I've googled and read all the Reddit threads, yet still can't find a cast list for the final episode.

Here's what I think (and I'm likely overthinking, but that's where we are at)

Steve and Reece announced that the final programme would also be broadcast live at the Picadilly Cinema (with them also there).

They have previously done one live show of Inside No 9. Perhaps for the final show, they are going to do a partial live broadcast (I'm thinking a who dunnit murder mystery weekend type thing)

They are either going to go out on a semi live high, or have a cliffhanger which will see us all waiting for the next installment / what are they going to do next

Other thoughts on Reddit are that it's a follow up to a previous episode (like The Harrowing) or an explanation about The Hare. There's also some talk of a LOG / Psychoville crossover.

As I said, I'm over invested.

On my TV guide on the TV it says the main cast each week including next week. (Virgin media)

I wish I could, but I'd get the sack from my job if I let you know 😬

OrangeCrusher · 10/06/2024 14:10

I just rewatched the latest episode and thought it was amazing. It seemed that so much of it was personal and how the writers feel about the pressure to produce for the audience. I particularly loved the bit when Reece talks to Eddie Marsden’s ghost about how to finish something and create something new. He said something about a false recapitulation, made me wonder if this is a hint to the final episode.
