Agree, love Isabel!

I bet Alfie's Mum was mega stressed with him going!

There was a thread on mumsnet a while back and their son was a bit clueless and going away for the first time and she was stressing out.
Issues how the two lads know each other. Are they brothers or mates??

TokyoSushi · 10/04/2024 22:27

I thought they might be twins but they're friends!

Mates since schooldays

It’s definitely better than the last series.

Liking Eugenie & Isabelle best so far, and the brother from the brother and sister pair.

Stephen seems like a complete knob and I’m already getting irritated with Sharon and Brydie’s edits when they’re talking to camera.

I dont get this. They all meander about, doing a day's paid work here and there, spending time relaxing in a spa....yet all arrive at the run within minutes of each other. Enjoyed the programme but so staged that it spoilt it a bit

I watched tonight for the first time. I don't get how it can be a 'race' when they are choosing to do touristy stuff. How did they end up at the location within a few hours of one another despite the detours, routes, time spent working, sightseeing. I don't get it!

GrandHighPoohbah · 10/04/2024 22:37

Isabelle is an absolute legend with the Japanese, good on her.

I have visions of Alfie's friend "accidentally" tipping him over a bridge by the third checkpoint 😂

the80sweregreat · 10/04/2024 22:39

I have often wondered if the camera crew get involved and can use their phones / internet and maybe give them a nudge ? I've no idea , but often they look lost and next thing they are able to find a train or coach and off they trot.
I do smell a rat at times , but only my own suspicions. They may not get any help at all apart from the kind locals !

That bit is just so stupid isn't it , shame as it spoils it

BeaLola · 10/04/2024 22:55

Byrdie & Sharon my favourites so far.
Steven is an acquired taste - not my taste at all. His wife has a lot of patience.
Isabelle good ref language but her and her Mum will run out of money if they keep going at this rate - didn't it say £40 ish for a taxi at one point .

The rules set by the producers (which the viewers aren't explicitly told) are that each couple needs to do a certain minimum number of sightseeing excursions per trip.

We know this from post-show interviews with the contestants.

Race-minded viewers tend to find this annoying. It's a personal call whether you find it sufficiently annoying to stop watching: on these threads obviously we tend to moan but keep watching.

Doingmybest12 · 10/04/2024 22:58

I agree the sight seeing is so illogical. I wish they'd earn credit by going on excursions or something otherwise is it a race or not. Also at the end it's about budget left as well as time I think and being first on checkpoints doesn't matter so I wonder if slow, no excursions and more work in the end can win..

periodiclabel · 10/04/2024 23:00

As others said, though it’s never explicitly explained, you have to do one excursion per episode – or something like that. So it is part of the race because everyone has to do something and factor in half a day taken out or whatever. otherwise, watching people just dash from endless train to bus to boat would get a bit much for the viewers and for them. Jobs are different because obviously the budget is super carefully you could avoid them, but in practice, I don’t remember, anyone getting through a whole series without having to work at least a couple of times and I’ve been watching series one

I'm finding Isabelle and her mum really likeable, but I think that their over-spend on this leg has screwed them fatally already, unless they charm a Malaysian billionaire into giving them a free lift for five hundred miles on his yacht (I'm not ruling that out tbh - they are very charming).

EvilRingahBitch · 10/04/2024 23:09

TTPD · 10/04/2024 21:36

Do they get given help with getting little jobs? I don't know how they could have found somewhere (and negotiated it) to clean in return for a camping spot.

In previous series you've seen them flicking through a booklet of job options set up by the producers saying "this one is in X and pays Y in cash/free accommodation, let's head there", so it determines the route they take.

I'm guessing that working for cash in Japan as an anglophone tourist would be challenging to say the least, and quite possibly criminal.

Rummikub · 10/04/2024 23:15

I forget how much I love this programme.

Isabel picking up Japanese fast!

Oh I like it!

Isabel said she wanted to see stuff and I agree! Makes for more interesting viewing.

I really didn’t want the boys to beat Isabel and Eugenie to the hotel.

Yes that's great, the bit where they're all suddenly 2 feet away from each other is the annoying part

Yes do agree about that.
With the editing I was confused.

PilkosPumpPants · 11/04/2024 00:00

Great start! Isabelle and her mum are my faves.

I know already I will not be acquiring any sort of taste for Stephen. I hate it when men, as it is usually men, suggest someone is “shy”. Then seeing some of his arse is too much.

Isabel is a kween! total kudos to her for making such an effort with the language

what is a kween?

PuppyMonkey · 11/04/2024 06:42

Just going to add my love for the first ep - I don’t MN along while watching these types of shows any more, like to watch it all first! Love the lovely Japanese talking teen and mum and found the two young lads very entertaining too (they may end up killing each other Grin).

MuscariFan · 11/04/2024 07:22

As long as it’s mandated that they all do a set amount of work and touristing, it’s all to the good I think. Let’s us see a bit of the country and the culture, and it would be criminal to go to these places and not actually see anything.

I don't think Stephen and (?) will be in it for long bumbling about. I quite the two young lads, though, maybe because I have grandchildren that age. I think one of the mother/daughter combos will win.
