MsLatté’s Daebak Cybercafé (Kdrama addicts #46): *Still* no sign of Lee Min-Ho, leaving us with plenty of time to debate whether Queen of Tears can be genre-defined and what’s going on with Kim Soo-Hyun’s neck

A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4989666-mslattes-daebak-cybercafe-kdrama-addicts-45-where-we-are-still-waiting-on-lee-min-hos-astronaut-obgyn-to-arrive-and-ponder-whether-2024-will-be-kdramas-breakout-year?reply=132388025 here.
Our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We often resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

@peanutcookie K-Club sounds awesome! 😍

I've just started Weightlifting Fairy, now that I've finished The Sound of Magic - good light-weight (no pun intended) fun so far 😁

MigsandTiggs · 02/07/2024 18:39

@peanutcookie I don't think that Red Sleeve will deliver the romance that you're expecting. Lee Jun-ho, however, is magnificent in it, and the starving really worked for the bathing scene. (My main takeaway from the drama) #FN 😎

AmVa · 02/07/2024 21:37

@peanutcookie agree with you on two things - new season of Bridgerton was such a let down!! It was actively boring.
Also I don't get the WWWSK hype either.

peanutcookie · 02/07/2024 22:06

I cannot possibly comment on the bath scene Wink

So mystery lady with wispy bearded councillor is the head court lady and has a secret army of ninja maids and a secret throne room and torture chamber. As you do.

I generally only watch 1 at a time on my own unless it's a current one and I have to wait. Now I'm considering strong girl nam soon. May have got the name wrong. I like a bit of time between series, hope it's as good as the first

peanutcookie · 02/07/2024 22:07

@polpolkettle yes writing sounds like a great idea, maybe even painting names in calligraphy too

Cobol · 02/07/2024 23:32

I haven't seen The Red Sleeve but as a sageuk veteran I can confirm that the political shenanigans are always confusing. I think it's because the way people address each other in Korean conveys a lot of information about the relationship between the speakers to native viewers that's simply lost when translated into English subtitles. I sometimes resort to looking up the cast list on Wiki to see how the various characters relate to each other but as a rough guide the left state Chancellor is almost always a bad'un and is often the father of the queen/crown princess.

I was also rather underwhelmed by WWWSK when I finally got around to it - maybe you had to be there at the time - but Weight Lifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo is an absolute gem that I would probably have never have watched if not for the recommends on this thread.

AmVa · 03/07/2024 01:59

I haven't watched Weight Lifting Fairy because of a (possibly irrational?) dislike of Nam Joo Hyuk ...is it worth powering through that ??

Cobol · 03/07/2024 09:22

That should be left state councilor, not chancellor, above. Please excuse my sloppy, late night proof- reading 😚

AmVa It's hard to say if you'd like Weight-Lifting Fairy... if you don't like Nam Joo-hyuk. On the one hand, it's mainly a story about the FL so maybe it wouldn't matter so much but on the other hand if you're not going to enjoy the ML's swimming scenes it does feel it could be a bit wasted on you 😁

AmVa · 04/07/2024 13:33

Does anyone here recommend Moon in the Day? I have been doing a speedy Shitting Stars rewatch (skipping through the b- plots I don't need to see a second time) and have been reminded of how much I enjoy Kim Young Dae.

AmVa · 04/07/2024 13:38

Okay weirdly straight after I posted that, I went on Reddit and immediately saw a thing about Kim Young Dae and Shin Min Ah's new romcom coming in August! Hooray

Cobol · 04/07/2024 15:04

We're watching Moon in the Day at the moment AmVa. It didn't get a great rating on the spreadsheet but I'm finding it ok so far in a lightweight fantasy/mystery kind of way.

How am I supposed to wait a WEEK for more MSM? kicks bucket and shakes fists at sky

MigsandTiggs · 04/07/2024 16:54

Pol, Wimbledon is on....😁

Thecatisboss · 04/07/2024 22:37

I've just finished watching My Dearest on Viki which I must have missed when it came out which really enjoyed. And watching new Chinese drama The Double which at 40 episodes will keep me busy. However also want a kdrama on the go so might try Moon in the Day again tried it once but got distracted.

MigsandTiggs · 05/07/2024 05:16

After the excellent and thought provoking political thriller,The Whirlwind, I was looking forward to something lighter in Red Swan but if it continues in the same vein as Eps 1&2 it will be decidedly meh and full of kdrama caricature characters.😢

Right there in despair with you! Just finished the last available episode. 5 days to wait!

boatyardblues · 06/07/2024 06:41

I have just caught up on MSM. I cannot agree more with the previous posts. The wait is interminable.

AmVa · 06/07/2024 07:05

Okay I haven't started MFM but now can't wait to and am glad I won't have this wait when I do start it!!

I am BUDDHA. I am PATIENCE PERSONIFIED.

I will NOT continue with MSM until it is complete

MigsandTiggs · 06/07/2024 12:46

I'm with you, @FedUpWithBriiiiick I stopped on Ep3, so lots to enjoy later. 💪

mrsfeatherbottom · 06/07/2024 13:45

What's the opposite of Buddha because that's me?!

Cobol · 06/07/2024 19:11

I got up to ep 4 of MSM before I had to pause it just because I can only watch Viki stuff on the big telly and I can't get anywhere near it atm. Every cloud has a silver lining I guess. After reading the comments I'm doubly looking forward to catching up in a couple of weeks time.

TheLoupGarou · 06/07/2024 22:29

I'm waiting to binge MSM - noticed cast includes Semantic Error next-level cutie patootie Park Jae-chan (Also recently in Bittersweet Hell )

polkettle · 07/07/2024 08:02

Finished Connection this morning on Kocowa. Hopefully it will come to Viki too as Soompi seem to be promoting it.
Anyway I thought it was a very well plotted and paced thriller with a satisfying conclusion, even if it occasionally relied on long convenient exposition dump speeches and the anti-stimulant drugs hysteria was somewhat undermined by heavy Kopiko PPL 😉
