MsLatté’s Daebak Cybercafé (Kdrama addicts #46): *Still* no sign of Lee Min-Ho, leaving us with plenty of time to debate whether Queen of Tears can be genre-defined and what’s going on with Kim Soo-Hyun’s neck

A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4989666-mslattes-daebak-cybercafe-kdrama-addicts-45-where-we-are-still-waiting-on-lee-min-hos-astronaut-obgyn-to-arrive-and-ponder-whether-2024-will-be-kdramas-breakout-year?reply=132388025 here.
Our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We often resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

Yes, Crash Landing would be my suggestion too.
It had an enormous effect on my and dh’s life. Our holidays are now always spent in Korea and it all started with Crash Landing on evening in lockdown.

If you want some cosy Sunday night telly with a romance, you can’t go wrong with Hometown Cha Cha Cha. If something isn’t hooking you in, don’t force it. Dip out & come back it later. I sometimes try the first 10 mins of 2 or 3 to see what grabs me. It’s less of an issue nowadays when there’s so many of us posting updates, as you can quickly narrow down which of the currently airing dramas are decent from the thread. Anything with a star by it in our opening list has been rated highly by regulars & is a good place to start.

I'm new to Mumsnet (looking for potty training survival tips) and have just come across this thread and it's made me so happy!

I love all the recommendations at the start of the thread and will defs pick my next drama from this. I'm off work at the moment after surgery a couple of weeks ago and I'm working through Good Day to be a Dog, just finished ep 8.

Not quite on the level of Behind your Touch that I watched before.

MigsandTiggs · 28/04/2024 22:09

Welcome @Spaghetti127 and all the newbies I've missed saying hello to 👋

boatyardblues · 28/04/2024 22:29

A big hello and welcome to @Spaghetti127 from me too! 👋 Sorry to hear about your surgery. If the potty training searches are recent, your recovery will be extra important to getting match fit. Kdrama is just the medicine that’s called for in challenging times.

At the start of the year we speculated whether 2024 might be kdrama’s breakout year. If the recent uptick in new posters (welcome!) is anything to go by, this could be a very big year. 🤞

Thanks for the warm welcome! yeah not sure I've got the timing right for the PT attempt but luckily DH is fighting fit and Kdrama is the best medicine for me.

I was lucky enough to go on hols to Korea in 2012 and 2019 and had such good experiences both times. Sky castle was my first drama, still one of my faves. Trying to get my friends on board but minus one they're not as enthusiastic as I'd hope!

Welcome newbies! I can't keep up up, but you are all very welcome to our niche, long OP world 😉❤️

Do all read the OP: absolutely valuable info there 👍

Friends: You watch Korean dramas?

Me: Yeah, they're great!

Friends: Like, with subtitles?

Me: Yeeees?

Friends: What are they about?

Me: Well, there's a famous one about a woman who paraglides into the DMZ and then has to hide in a village and falls in love with a soldier and then there is potatoes and Switzerland.

Friends: ...

Me: So great!

TheLoupGarou · 29/04/2024 07:18

A true story:
My cousin: So, is that 'Kingdom' any good?
Me: ! Yes! And if you like it you could also watch ... blah, blah, suggestions
(10 mins later)
My cousin : seriously, I'll buy you a pint if you stop talking about k-drama.

Welcome @Spaghetti127 thoughts and prayers re potty training - my most hated parenting phase probably 😬.

Dh and I couldn’t believe it when we discovered the treasure trove of K drama. It was like hearing Schubert after an exclusive diet of late Schoenberg.
We told all our friends but to little effect. Some laughed (really annoying reaction); some watched for 5mins before switching off; most didn’t even try.
We did manage a couple of converts and a couple of people enjoyed Crash Landing but didn’t pursue it further.

mrsfeatherbottom · 29/04/2024 10:27

Agreed - everyone I mention it to looks like me like I've completely lost the plot!

We were having dinner with friends and one guy said that his father with dementia spends all day watching kdramas!

I'm really enjoying QoT!

Anyone watch the end of Shogun? Anjin's Japanese was a bit hit and miss - one minute he's saying "Fuji ... good ...nun" and then he's all "I formally protest against the punishment of the villagers ...."

I just watched the last ep of Shogun last night. I have enjoyed it but had the same thoughts about Anjin's Japanese. Did you think that the ending was left so there could be another series? Because Anjin had Mariko's cross back and he's still got ships to build?

TheGirlWithTheArabStrap · 29/04/2024 11:40

Also hello to the new posters 👋👋👋

mrsfeatherbottom · 29/04/2024 13:05

Google tells me there are no plans for a second season but it was left a bit open.

boatyardblues · 29/04/2024 19:30

What? No second series of Shogun? 😭 I can live without bargain Tom Hardy but I want more quality soft furnishing/textile porn. Again, 😭😭😭

theGirl, apparently Shogun was years in the making and covered the whole book, so no plans for a series 2.

I might have to rewatch QoT just to check out the artwork now.

Ahh OK. Maybe I need to read the book to find out how he got Mariko's cross back from the bottom of the sea 😅
