MsLatté’s Daebak Cybercafé (Kdrama addicts #46): *Still* no sign of Lee Min-Ho, leaving us with plenty of time to debate whether Queen of Tears can be genre-defined and what’s going on with Kim Soo-Hyun’s neck

A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix and Viki, with a sprinkling of AmazonPrime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama as & when.

The previous thread is www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4989666-mslattes-daebak-cybercafe-kdrama-addicts-45-where-we-are-still-waiting-on-lee-min-hos-astronaut-obgyn-to-arrive-and-ponder-whether-2024-will-be-kdramas-breakout-year?reply=132388025 here.
Our list is cumulative so includes recommendations and favourites from all previous threads. Shows marked with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. In categorising series, its important to note most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance and a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series that are tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Writer/actor Simon Pegg referred to it fondly as “tonal chaos” - it’s part of kdrama’s charm. View the categories below as best approximate & ask if you need guidance about suitability for younger viewers.

We are fans of all things Korean, so equally happy to talk about Korean cookery, language, current affairs, film and music when the mood takes us. A few of us are learning Korean, Japanese and/or Mandarin (some more diligently than others), so we swap tips and links to language resources. Basically, anything topical goes.

We often resort to acronyms and/or abbreviations of show titles or actors’ names. Don’t be afraid to ask for help/clues if we’re not making sense or have descended into acronym soup.

If you want to join us down the kdrama rabbit hole, welcome! Pull up a chair, say goodbye to early nights and get stuck in!

Side bar: I’m finding this Korean name list interesting: https://www.behindthename.com/names/usage/korean I haven’t read the linked explainer yet.

The user-submitted names at the end of the main list is more expansive. I picked up in the notes under one that Jesus is 예수님 (Yesu-nim) in Korean.

QoT ep 15 cliff hanger🙀

🙀 indeed!!!

boatyardblues · 28/04/2024 16:57

Oh my God, I’m only 8 mins into ep 16 (edit:corrected) QOT and it’s screaming makjang to me. Still, nearly 2 hours in this final episode to smooth out all of the wrinkles. 🤞

Argh I already feel I don’t know enough. I guess we liked the scenery and all the different stories. We started watching the one where she was the nanny and found her father (?) was the chauffeur etc what is QoT?

boatyardblues · 28/04/2024 17:30

Feel free to ask questions @Houseinawood . A lot of the titles are long so get abbreviated when we’re talking about them lots. QOT is Queen of Tears on Netflix, final episode dropped about an hour ago. The makjang concept is explained here: https://dramakicks.com/what-are-makjang-dramas/#google_vignette

what are makjang dramas

What are Makjang Dramas

Makjang dramas are rating monsters in the world of K-dramas because it involves plot lines that goes way overboard, but are captivating nonetheless.

It's such a rollercoaster of quality this show. The tonal shifts are mental 🤪

Andante57 · 28/04/2024 18:31

Just finished last episode of QoT.
I agree with FedUp - It's such a rollercoaster of quality this show. The tonal shifts are mental 🤪
Glad that the trainee boxer made a quick recovery after his bout with the baddies.
I liked the Man Bok & Aunt Beom Ja plot line the best.

FedUpWithBriiiiick · 28/04/2024 18:54

More plot holes than a Swiss cheese but not a bad makjang.

Andante57 · 28/04/2024 19:08

I read somewhere that the writer Park Ji Eun originally wrote this in 2010 - not sure if that’s true.
There’s a scene involving a hospital and a snowstorm that had some similarities with a scene in CLOY but whether she first had that idea when she wrote CLOY, or whether she took the CLOY scene from her 2010 version of QoT, I don’t know.

I take back my last comment. It was a bad makjang 🤣🤣🤣

MigsandTiggs · 28/04/2024 19:24

Hahaha! I'm enjoying the different levels of frustrations here more than QoT itself.

@Houseinawood You know it's makjang when someone is being dragged kicking and screaming out of the courtroom and your first thought is "Nice shoes!" because that is all part of the ongoing craziness😂

I predict that irl, FL will take one look at her tiny double chin in silhouette and hot foot it to the nearest plastic surgeon.

Overall QoT wasn't the best but it made me laugh. That hospital scene must win in the award category for squeezing the most people around a bed.

The infection control was put the window 🤣

In UK/NI a rightly cross nurse would be straight over shouting 2 VISITORS AT A TIME ONLY!

MigsandTiggs · 28/04/2024 19:48

boaty, I'm off to see where I can watch Love in Sadness and Sorry I love you as I've seen all the other makjang dramas mentioned in the article. I'm still miffed that there wasn't a series 4 of LftM&D. I miss the horny ghost and Bu Bae in his tiny speedos.😎😂

I don’t even know where to begin with scoring that hot mess. 🤔 They gave it everything and then some more but somehow I’m left so unsatisfied.

Me too, Boaty, me too. I can’t exactly pin it down why, though.
Certainly it lacked the originality of CLOY, MLFTS and even Legend of the Blue Sea.
Plus points: Kwak Dong-yeon is a fantastic actor as is Park Sung Hoon. The latter’s evil facial expressions were remarkable.
I enjoyed the village scenes especially the tombola incident.

mrsfeatherbottom · 28/04/2024 21:03

I enjoyed it and all it's silliness! Cried my eyes out at the end but I do cry at everything.

I've one episode left of Rain or Shine and I've a horrible feeling about the ending - no spoilers please!

polkettle · 28/04/2024 21:15

Finished it too and, while not a tear was shed and the chemistry never chemistried for me (curiously snog-light show - was there just the one smooch in Germany when they were still all over the place anyway??) I don't regret the 24 hours of my life I spent on it. There were enough sparky good bits and warm bits and side character fun and it made me laugh.
But don't get me STARTED on the final episode raccoon 🙄.

MigsandTiggs · 28/04/2024 21:30

Houseinawood · 28/04/2024 21:34

Crash Landing on You @Houseinawood That's pretty much always the answer. Gateway drug.
