littlbrowndog · 05/04/2024 19:59

Was it a regular thing?

( sorry)

@Sandytoxic "But you go to a restaurant for the food, not cos the chef is going to come out have a chat with you! #teamHope"

You and I may think that. I know people who would disagree!

BIWI · 06/04/2024 10:38

We had really good food when I was at school - especially the puddings. One that they made was truly fabulous. One of those big metal trays lined with really short pastry, spread with jam, and topped with Viennese whirl biscuits, served with custard that was lovely and thin.

BestIsWest · 06/04/2024 12:48

We had amazing food at primary school too, especially the puddings. We had a savoury bacon and egg pie, like a thin quiche that I still wish I could taste again. For some reason we called it Dalek pie.

RomainesToBeSeen · 06/04/2024 13:56

Sorry I missed you all last night - something came up last minute but have just caught up.

And yes, to all of the school dinner memories. Everyone should have served in big rectangular trays and cut into squares. And a metal jug of water on the side that made the water taste funny - none of this water bottle nonsense in my days?!?! 😊

RomainesToBeSeen · 06/04/2024 14:00

And just in case anyone was interested in the school meals at Eton...

www.independentsbysodexo.com/eton-college/#:~:text=Our%20core%20menus%20contain%20both,Jamaican%20jerk%20chicken%20with%20plantain.

I don't recognise many menu choices from my 1970s comprehensive!

Piggywaspushed · 06/04/2024 15:47

We had tapioca.
And semolina with a blob of jam.

The headteacher, Mrs Gorgon, patrolled watching us eat our 'delicious' vegetables. I think I became a packed lunch trailblazer around P6.

ImCamembertTheBigCheese · 06/04/2024 15:48

The food at my primary was atrocious. Hard mashed potato divided out by a very small ice cream scoop, baked beans that never tasted like baked beans - as if it had some additive, the bitter liver and onions that were truly disgusting 🤮

BestIsWest · 06/04/2024 16:29

We had macaroni pudding which sounds bizarre now. Like rice pudding with macaroni instead of rice. Sago, tapioca and semolina took an occasional turn on the menu too.

BIWI · 06/04/2024 16:48

I was at a large state comprehensive in the 70s, but our meals were great. Every Monday a menu for the week would be circulated to all forms, and we would choose what were having. Each meal was either a salad, a hot meal or a 'snack' - which was something like a burger and a glass of soup, or tinned ravioli with grated cheese and bread and butter. Not many people had packed lunches as they were so good.

LaMarschallin · 06/04/2024 17:00

I remember Spam fritters, grey, fatty meat (whatever type it was) and, yes, the ice cream scoops of potato.
A teacher used to patrol to make sure we'd eaten everything, but I got good at nipping rapidly to the pig swill bin and scraping the remains (most of it) in.

Have actually just caught up on last night's episode and it turns out I'm making something very similar to Olivia's effort for supper tonight: Nigella's polenta coated fish, minty mashed peas and salt & vinegar roast potatoes.
Have been inspired to make a Hollandaise based tartar sauce to go with it.
Hope looks destined for the final but I'm beginning to wonder if she should be on the professional show. The amount of packed lunch paraphernalia she'd brought was ridiculous!
Clever, but ridiculous.
And she was doing the old acting trick of staring ahead without blinking to make the tears come.

Sandytoxic · 07/04/2024 07:44

My memories of school dinners were lumpy mashed potato, and revolting puddings with nicknames like frogspawn.

Mothership4two · 08/04/2024 06:10

My primary school dinners were vile and vividly remember spam fritters making a weekly appearance like @LaMarschallin. We also had a horrid brown mousse thing for pudding. I begged my mum for a packed lunch. When we moved and I went to a secondary school their dinners were a revelation - tasty but standard grub.
