Anyone interested in the build up this year? I have been more aware this year as the songs are announced. I like Croatia, Ireland and Finland. Dizzy is hopefully going to do well which makes it exciting - Olli Alexander should be good performing live and he is well known in Europe.

Just reading about the controversy with Israel’s entry and I see that Iceland might send a Palastinian singer.

Ukraine have been the favourites for a while but Croatia is just ahead of them now.

I’m curious to see how the televote being open from the start will affect things. In theory an early slot could be a bonus with that set up. (Vote early, vote often). I’d actually expect the acts who are on just before the breaks to do well in this system.

Will put up a new thread when I get to the airport, late afternoon if I don't get time before I check out this morning btw. Spending the afternoon in the city.

I watched very late last night but thankfully managed to stay away from spoilers so giving my thoughts now!

It was a great show last night, so much better than semi-final 1. This wasn't just doe to better quality of competing entries but the whole thing seemed slicker and more entertaining. Petra remains one of my favourite people in the world and her interval act was brilliant. The only small grumble was Rylan going on about her number containing a surprise cameo that would blow our minds, despite the fact that he'd earlier told us that Kaarija was performing in the interval (actually just wondering now if he was actually referring to the Moomins).

None of the animosity towards Israel came across in the broadcast. I understand they used anti-boo technology to drown out negative sounds and there was actually a noticeable change in the background noise as they took to the stage which I took to be pre-recorded cheering kicking in. There was a lot of zooming in on Israeli flags throughout the whoel show, just to emphasise, I suppose, that not everyone is hostile to their participation. It reminded me that we queued next to a lovely Israeli group last year who were so into Eurovision and having a great time in Liverpool. The war is not happening in their name and events like this should be about unity but their participation and the way it has been handled does leave a bad taste in my mouth. The whole thing is just very uncomfortable and I wish Eden hadn't qualified as it would have good to draw a line and enjoy Saturday for what it is. That said, and putting politics aside, her performance was good and she has a great voice. Ultimately I felt sorry for Petra and Malin when they were announcing the qualifiers - you could tell they weren't sure what kind of tone to use and then moved on very quickly.

There were some real surprises, although I had a feeling there would be falling giants in this one. I didn't ever really expect Chzechia to make it, even though it's one of my favourite songs in the contest this year so no surprise there although I was still disappointed. Gutted for Belgium though - I thought that would go through. Mustii didn't start well but I thought he recovered and gave great vocals for the song's crescendo.

Italy remains my ultimate favourite song this year but I didn't like the staging at all and it came across as really lacklustre and failed to make an impact. Despite being an early favourite, I predict it will come in around 15th place.

I've also loved Switzerland since my first hearing and I have to say that Nemo's performance gave me goosebumps last night. He's a great performer and the song has real feeling. It just feels like a winner to me and while I've defintiely changed my mind on Croatia since Tuesday's show and wouldn't mind seeing Baby Lasagna lift the trophy, I'd be much happier with a Swiss win and will be voting for Nemo on Saturday.

I do love Joost but I don't think his performance came across well on tv and I'm actually surprised he made it through. The vocals were terrible - it seemed that the track was playing in the background and he just shouted a few things over the top from time to time. I don't think anyone who hadn't previously heard it would have any idea what the song is about, which meant that the heartfelt ending seemed weirdly tacked on and out of place.

Estonia, on the other hand, came across much better than I expected with the live performance bringing a lacklustre studio recording to life. Not surprised they qualifed although they weren't in my initial predictions.

The running order is, frankly, terrible, and sells out some good songs. I hadn;t realised though that televoting would be open throughout which might change things, otherwise Ukraine have been sold a donkey. The cynical part of me wonders if their 2nd place was intentional to ensure that we don't keep having Ukraine wins and big 5 hosting ever other year. There are some very odd placing choices here.

Charlotte Perrelli, Carola, and Conchita Wurst will perform as an interval act in Saturday's #Eurovision Grand Final, bringing a tribute to ABBA.

It was done about 10 years ago and didn't make a difference, the vast majority of people still waited until the end to vote.

Mans has been banned. Clearly.

Why???????

Has he been cancelled as the result of breaching some niche Swedish shibboleth which we don't know about?

Has he been cast as the next Bond and is locked up in a Pinewood camp for six months reshaping his body and removing his accent?

Maybe he is contracted to a particular TV station in Sweden.

Sakura7 · 10/05/2024 10:38

The RAI televote is worry and unfortunately has put a bit of a downer on things.

I think most of us fans naively thought that while Israel would do well in the televote, this was not a Ukraine type situation. However the pro Israel crowd will be very motivated to vote.

Apparently some Dutch far right politicians have been calling for people to vote Israel, I'd imagine that's happening in other countries too.

The semi finals are not watched in great numbers in Italy, so hopefully this is just a case of a small pool being easier to influence, but it's very concerning.

An Israeli win would be absolutely disastrous for the contest, but the EBU have only themselves to blame.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 10/05/2024 10:48

Agreed @Sakura7

Douzepoints · 10/05/2024 11:06

I'm sure I read something months ago where Mans siad he had conflicting committments so wouldn't be there this year - is he on tour or something like that? I can't find anything, including evidence of what I thought I read previously.

Agree that an Israel win would be a disaster. I feel it's unlikely with the Croatian and Swiss behemoths in play but still worrying.

I've always argued to those who say Eurovision is too political and not about the songs and that's why the UK don't do well, that Israel, and tbf, Russia before the ban, prove this is not the case. That the fact those countries do well is because Eurovision audiences tend to think along the lines of "dubious political morals but they've put all that aside and have focused on a really great song to entertain us all and promote unity through music". Look at Unicorn coming in third place last year, for example. Things have changed so much though and it's hard to shake the politics. Hurricane is really problematic, IMO. We all know that the lyrics were changed but there's enough context in the lyrics which did survive to make clear what the song is really about.

thecatsthecats · 10/05/2024 11:40

The thing is, those who support Israel for whatever reason only need to do one thing - vote Israel. That gets you a fair few douze points.

Those who are anti will vote for other songs, but not necessarily in a coordinated fashion.

So it will come down to juries, and agnostic voters.

The popular vote will split Croatia, Switzerland, Israel. Juries should absolutely reward Switzerland.

I really hope Switzerland take it. I just had to rewatch this morning because the performance was just gorgeous. Happy also with Croatia.

Sakura7 · 10/05/2024 11:43

I think France could be the jury winner, and it's in a great slot to pick up televotes too.

It's one that largely went under my radar but I thought it was stunning last night.

Yes I think France will clean up with the juries.

DizzyBumble · 10/05/2024 12:04

Don't tend to watch the semi's but I love the final & enjoy seeing them for the first time then. Roll on Saturday

Winglessvulture · 10/05/2024 12:18

Possibly an unpopular opinion, but I didn't enjoy the second semi final anywhere near as much as the first. There were still some good songs in there (Georgia, Greece, Switzerland) and of course Norway who are great. I also thought Spain were brilliant. Overall though it just didn't grip me like the first one.

The man singing for France has a beautiful voice, but in the last few years I have found many of their performances a bit too serious and worthy, which I think hurts them at the televote. As others have said though the juries will (quite rightly) support it.

Also sad about the lack of MÃ¥ns! Loved the Tattoo spoof at the start but Malin and Petra don't have the same fun chemistry.

https://www.aftonbladet.se/nojesbladet/melodifestivalen/a/JbobGm/joost-klein-fran-nederlanderna-dok-inte-upp-i-eurovision-ebu-utreder-incident

Netherlands artist Joost Klein , 26, was in the opening flag parade on the Eurovision stage during the genre rep.

But then he never performed his song "Europapa".

Without any comment from the production, they just skipped start number 5 and instead went from Luxembourg with start number 4 to Israel with start number 6.

And

Marked against Israel's artist
During the press conference after the semi-final, Joost Klein marked sharply against Eden Golan .

A Polish journalist asked the Israeli artist:

  • Have you ever considered that by being here you pose a risk and danger to other artists and to the public?

When the host of the press conference, the Swedish journalist Jovan Radomir, broke in and said that Eden did not have to answer the question, Joost Klein roared out with the words:

  • Why not?!

During the press conference, where the Dutch delegation was placed next to the Israeli one, Joost Klein chose to hide several times under the Dutch flag.

It has been interpreted as a mark, after Joost Klein, according to media reports, also earlier in the week refused to pose for a picture together with Eden Golan.

Details: Incident after the semi-final is the cause
But according to information to Aftonbladet, it is instead another event, which should have occurred after the semi-final, which means that Joost Klein did not repeat.

  • We are currently investigating an incident reported to us involving the Dutch artist. He will not rehearse until further notice. We have no further comments on this and will update when the opportunity arises, says a spokesperson from the EBU to Aftonbladet.

Aftonbladet has contacted the SVT production and the Dutch delegation with questions about the reported incident and why he did not carry out the rehearsal as planned.

Talk that he is going to be disqualified.

RedToothBrush · 10/05/2024 14:36

And rumours he has deleted his Instagram posts about Eurovision. I can't verify this as I'm not on Instagram.

EvilRingahBitch · 10/05/2024 14:43

Oh god what a mess. Tactically speaking, if he does get forced out for breach of behavioural rules then that enables the AnyoneButIsrael vote to solidify behind Croatia/Switzerland. But it's all so depressing.

Isn't it just. I have no idea how people will react.

There were people spontaneously singing Europapa outside the stadium after the later show.

RedToothBrush · 10/05/2024 15:05

My friend knows people who know Joost. They said he was unstable before the contest to her. Didn't know if he'd cope with the pressure. It's awful.

RedToothBrush · 10/05/2024 15:09

Well... This is the rumour.

I guess we wait and see to hear if this is the truth.
