Or Call Saint Turner, as the show has really turned into.

yes sister francis had a good character development

LaBelleSauvage123 · 01/03/2024 08:10

I guess they have to put the nuns into the background as their prominence in the service faded historically, but I think it’s a shame for the drama.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 26/02/2024 17:07

yes, i thought they would have gone by ship, far more likely

Not really. My father was working in Africa in the 50s, we were flying regularly between London and Nairobi.

To most people in 1969 going to the US was as likely as flying to the moon!

1969 really was not the dark ages. Because of our colonial history, people were flying all ove.r the place. After al, the first prototypes of Concorde flew in 1969.

True. I was 14 then and it wasn't ancient history. I never went abroad on holiday but some people did and my Dad flew all over the place for work. I was born abroad to British parents and my first flight was to the UK from North Africa although it necessitated a stop over in Malta but that was in the 1950s.

People wore fashionable clothes from places like Dorothy Perkins or made their own. Also, although racism was rife as mentioned not everyone was racist. The nuns shouldn't have been and there would have been black nuns (possibly converted by missionaries) and there were many recent immigrants from the West Indies working in the NHS so it wouldn't have been unusual for the midwives to have non-white colleagues.

I've never cried at a TV show like I did when Barbara died. I lost a friend to meningococcal septicaemia when I was 17 so there was a mixture of the emotions coming back from that but also just because Barbara was a lovely character and deserved a happy ever after with Tom. Sad

I used to always make sure the tissues were handy when CtM was on. I couldn't tell you the last time I needed them.

I lost a friend at the same age with meningitis. Never leaves you 😞❤️

I completely agree about the nuns and midwives not being at all racist and about general attitudes gradually improving, but I was thinking more about how unrealistic it would be that Cyril, for example - especially as he's now doing a job that can be viewed with hostility anyway by parents worried that he just wants to take away their kids - wouldn't meet with some racism in potentially tense or sensitive situations.

PuttingDownRoots · 01/03/2024 10:25

Its odd in way.. they have shown the racism towards Cyril and Lucille in the past. Including that MP speech last series (Rivers of Blood). Now... nothing.

@Ulysees - Flowers It really doesn't, you're spot on. I'm 42 now, my friend would have just had her birthday last month and I always think about how different things could have been. I lost another friend to cancer less than 2 years later so my late teens weren't the best in that way. Sad

shearwater2 · 01/03/2024 10:39

I think they couldn't show all the racism there was as it would just end up being a programme about racism.

And I acknowledged that, but showing one instance in an eight week series wouldn't be overkill, and would show that it's not a neatly solved problem. They could have had a short scene where there's a casually racist comment directed to Cyril, one of the other characters (e.g. the new MC student midwife) shows concern for him and he says something like "you get used to it, some people never seem to accept anyone different to themselves". Wouldn't have to be the focus of the episode, wouldn't have to be repeated every week, but makes the point that overt racism was still a very real problem.

Maybe it would just take up too much time and be a distraction from the actual midwifery.

InMySpareTime · 01/03/2024 11:47

Not that much actual midwifery is happening in the recent series, there's often only one birth per episode, and loads of Dr Turner drama.
I'd rather a bit more social commentary and a lot less "Yay".

RosaMoline · 03/03/2024 12:25

Is it the last episode of the season tonight?

Is it the last episode of the season tonight?

I think so. Then it’s back on 25th Dec 🌲 ⛄️

The series always seem quite short.

PuttingDownRoots · 03/03/2024 17:12

Any predictions for tonight's episode?

EchoChamber · 03/03/2024 17:18

Trixie decides she needs a proper break. She goes to visit her godmother and whilst there meets an amazing man. She never comes back to Poplar. She writes to tell the nuns that Matthew has offered her a quick divorce. Six months later she is married to a Count and living in Tuscany. She’s started a midwifery clinic in the nearest town.

catwithflowers · 03/03/2024 17:31

@EchoChamber ooh I like that story for Trixie. I would add that a year after opening her clinic (which is an amazing success) she falls pregnant and has twins 😂

InMySpareTime · 03/03/2024 17:33

Trixie goes on a bender then goes to rehab to dry out, where she meets a rock star.
Dr Turner discovers a new birthing technique and mansplains it to the midwives.
New midwife spurns her secret husband and he goes mental and burns down Nonnatus house for a season finale to remember.
Dr Turner just happens to be passing the cul de sac and single handedly rescues everyone, including sr MJ, who emerges from the smouldering wreckage clutching a cake tin.

Oh yes! I meant to add that bit..

PuttingDownRoots · 03/03/2024 19:08

A baby for Trixie could be an interesting development in this episode, with Matthew the other side of the Atlantic

I thought that was what the consultation with Dr T was leading up to last week. I was quite surprised by the sleeping pill thing.

Elderflower14 · 03/03/2024 20:00

I want to know why Sister Veronica throws the tray at Sister MJ.

Elderflower14 · 03/03/2024 20:02
