Or Call Saint Turner, as the show has really turned into.

lol. Reporting for duty, Turner family style.

Interested to see how Matthew has managed to lose the family silver…

Re: Yul Brynner (last thread)
Would that have been the London palladium, circa 1979? I saw it too, I was 12 and utterly entranced. My dad worked in town & got tickets through his company. They must’ve been like gold dust.
Back to CTM….yes, like many of you I foresaw there was going to be an incident/swept out to sea the minute Timothy gave them the lilo. And that the young mother would go into labour at the beach. I did think that she would have to give birth in a beach hut though!
I too am really beginning to dislike Trixie’s character. She’s always been (slightly) irritating, but I’m finding her shallow, greedy and insensitive.
I wonder where the money’s gone? Gambled hugely on the stock market and lost?

PuttingDownRoots · 04/02/2024 21:43

I used to like Trixie.

The "neglectful" mother was a lot present and caring than the Turners. Stereotypical middle class neglect...

As a Cub leader... the leaders going off (even in a mercy mission!) and leaving the Cubs at the beach with whichever adults stood up...

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 04/02/2024 21:49

Haha I only just realised that both the cub leaders left all the kids behind. And I'm a Cub leader!

I guess Matthew renovating all his buildings, not trying to get lots of money out of his tenents, giving nonnatus several blank cheques and whatever else he's just freely handed money out to won't have helped. Posh gits like him tend to be rich in capital rather than cash and if he's been using all the capital then there won't be much income coming in.

Terfosaurus · 04/02/2024 21:51

Yay!

Just checking in.

LIZS · 04/02/2024 21:59

Was May's birth mother not an addict and unmarried? Thought she abandoned her in the HK orphanage,

Toddlerteaplease · 04/02/2024 22:00

Mays mum had a chaotic lifestyle so couldn't raise her. Last heard of working as a nanny to a family in HK.

PinkFrogss · 04/02/2024 22:06

I thought her mum was an addict?

OP posts:
PinkFrogss · 04/02/2024 22:08

Yes apparently Mays mother was a drug addict and prostitute: https://callthemidwife.fandom.com/wiki/Esther_Tang

Also says May was injured in her care.

Would they really have cared what she thought about the Turners? Surprised she’s even getting information about May.

Esther Tang

Esther Tang is the mother of the Turners foster daughter May Tang, she was a refugee who was assumed dead but is actually alive and wants her daughter. Esther Tang was a Hong Kong refugee, with no other option she turned to prostitution to support hers...

I think she's a reformed heroin addict.

QuestionableMouse · 04/02/2024 22:12

Well I stopped watching before the end because my eyes were in danger from falling out of my head from rolling so much.

Jojobees · 04/02/2024 22:15

I think it’s getting a bit predictable every episode now.
Trixie is irritating, and has become grabby. I do love Phylis though.

ssd · 04/02/2024 22:19

I'm in danger of setting a series link for this, much to dhs dismay.

hellswelshy · 04/02/2024 22:24

Can I join? I'm wondering if the writers have changed this series, it's been very different I think from previous series. Not sure if it's a lack of strong characters, not enough plot lines going on in the background or..what? I mean two near death plot lines in one series - Fred and now May? I am a devoted CTM fan but something is not working for me.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 04/02/2024 22:29

Was wondering why I couldn't post on the old thread!

I rolled my eyes a lot in this episode, Trixie suddenly being very dense when it's obvious Mathew is broke. 🙄

Sheila being a shit mother and having no clue her kid was being washed out to sea and then seriously ill that evening. 🙄

The mum in China being so easily contactable... 🙄

Dr Timothy being a better Dr than his father 🙄

The young parents who had been in care being able to suddenly know how to parent 🙄

Bunionbabe · 04/02/2024 22:42

Just to add, Yul Bryner was sexy and magnificent (sigh). The new guy, not so much I think. Is Doc Turner always such a ham? Mrs T and Tim too? More acting talent in one of those iced buns.

FiveFoxes · 04/02/2024 22:42

I thought the lilo might be a problem as soon as they said the word. Children being swept out to sea is what the word "lilo" makes me think of. This is possibly because there were several incidents that I can't remember but we're well known in the news (possibly before I was even born).

As for the secondary drowning and the photo eye problem... They have both come up on MN many times as suggestions to threads so not surprised so many of us knew about them!

However, if your child had near drowned and needed to be revived earlier in the day, even if you know nothing, the fact that they were poorly in the evening would make you seek medical help surely?! You might not know about secondary drowning but you might think they has swallowed something...!

I didn't find it unrealistic that the Turners went home leaving May in hospital. I think that was quite usual in those days.

Finally - I thought pre school was a newish thing. When I was young (and I wasn't born until way after 1969) it was called nursery school I think. Does anyone else know?

Me too my mum took me as a treat it was magical

blumblumblum · 04/02/2024 22:49

As soon as the writing diverted from the book it went ham- about 10 series ago. Still grateful for the no- brainer Sunday night viewing though.

BebbanburgIsMine · 04/02/2024 22:56

I know they're not popular on here, but I love the Turners.

Laura Main is from the same place as me, I lived quite near her school, and her school drama teacher is a good friend of mine.

I have a loyalty to her!

PastorCarrBonarra · 04/02/2024 23:05

I don’t understand why May’s mother has a say. This was the era when newborns were being removed from unmarried British mums (“forced adoptions”). Surely then, there was no likelihood of the mother in HK having input. Was there? I suppose they must’ve done their homework and based the story on something.

The young couple with the two daughters - amazing. Interesting storyline. That consultant though 😡

NoBinturongsHereMate · 04/02/2024 23:08

Yes, strict visiting hours even for children's wards. Might not even have been every day, certainly no hanging around overnight.

From the previous thread, lilos had been around for a couple of decades by then. Not sure when they switched from rubberised canvas to plastic but the one in this episode had a matte look that could well have been the former.

And correspondence with Hong Kong I'd expect to be by post, not phone.

CecilyP · 04/02/2024 23:24

You’re right, a private nursery school would have been called just that - a nursery school!

I also thought the near drowning seemed unlikely given the sandy beach where the sea was so calm, though perhaps that’s just my local beach where you have to go out about half a mile for the water to come up to your chest!

I think it very unlikely they did their homework. I thought May was adopted rather than fostered but either way can’t see her mother having any further input. The awful consultant I could believe!

I had a plastic Lilo 1960! The rubberised canvas ones were more upmarket! Yes a call to Hong Kong would have to have been booked through the international exchange and would have cost a fortune. Maybe the adoption agency had funds but Mae’s mother certainly wouldn’t have.
