Scandi noir: suggestions

I need a good, bleak Scandi thing to get my teeth into. Doesn't have to be new to telly/streaming, just new to me. Please don't just tell me to check out Walter Presents – I try, sometimes, but I'm getting a bit noir-blind with choice!
Let me hear your actual personal favourites.

Those I have loved include:
The Killing (the original and best IMO)
Trapped
Borgen (Yes, I've seen the newer/comeback season, about Greenland, too)
The Bridge
Those Who Kill
The Out-Laws
Rebecka Martinsson Arctic Murders
Ride Upon the Storm
The Legacy
Floodland

I know not all of these are technically Scandi, or technically that bleak, but basically I mean quality foreign drama, ideally featuring combination of some or all of nice interiors, nice threads and windswept/snowy/dramatic/melancholic landscapes.

TIA!

For myths and legends you'd enjoy Katla.

mamaca · 26/01/2024 22:42

Yeah, I also really liked Follow The Money

lavenderlou · 26/01/2024 22:49

Not Scandi but the new series of True Detective - Night Country - is set in Alaska and has a similar feel. It's very bleak. It's on Sky but I watch through Now TV.

Reptilemummy · 26/01/2024 22:59

The Bridge
Astrid

It was actually filmed in Iceland though, standing in for Alaska. So it’s more Nordic than you might think!

I didn't realise that! Maybe that's why there are so many UK actors in it - closer to the UK than the US. It looks cold, dark and unpleasant wherever it is.....

How did I not know about Walter Presents? 😳
@MarkWithaC I might now have to give up work just to watch all these things 😂 Started Snow Angels last night and loving it, after a run of crappy police box sets doing my head in (Paranoid and Stay Close etc) thank you for starting the thread!

From the above, I didn't finish Deadwind. There's filmed on a budget and then there's people running round the same stairwell for an entire series. It might have got better though.

It is a slippery slope 😀 I’d love to give up work to watch gloomy subtitled dramas.

Spoiler: we stuck it out and it didn't. We played a game of guessing whose turn it was to get bonked on the head.

I just remembered the name of a Polish series that we loved: The Mire.

I don't know if its still on Walter presents but l really enjoyed Tabula Rasa, a Belgian psychological thriller with a twist.

This was fantastic !

QueenBitch666 · 31/01/2024 01:45

Engrenages ( Spiral )
Braquo
All 3 Wallender series. They all have a different vibe

QueenBitch666 · 31/01/2024 01:51

Can I recommend Gomorrah. Mafia drama set in Naples. It's bleak
And Locked Up. Spanish prison drama

BlindurErBóklausMaður · 31/01/2024 07:27

Finished Snow Angels last night.
Blimeyheck that was good. And bleak.

I think it takes very good writing and acting for me to find even heinous people likeable. (except for Alice's whiny husband, he can do one)

@PickAChew good to know!

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 31/01/2024 22:38

Can't praise Spiral enough!
Follow the Money was excellent, eso series 1.
Currently enjoying Nordic Murders on C4 (Walter Presents). It's set on a Baltic island, so not technically Nordic if I'm being pedantic!
Also enjoying Hidden Assets, not Scandi but Irish-Belgian. Just started watching season 2 (iPlayer).

Freysimo · 01/02/2024 07:23

The Golden Hour, about a terrorist attack is very good. Dutch, not Scandi and on Netflix. Ten times better and more realistic than Trigger Point.

MarkWithaC · 01/02/2024 11:48

Oh,I loved Nordic Murders. Fantastic area and scenery. I thought I'd watched it all, but now I look I think there's a fourth season I've yet to see. Yay!

That was actually German, wan't it, IIRC?

MarkWithaC · 01/02/2024 13:51

Don't know the details of who produced/financed it etc, but it was set on an island that appeared to be part-German, part-Polish (it opens with a murder in a border town and both lots of police have to get involved). The dialogue IIRC was a mix of Polish and German. It's really interesting.

Although not Scandi but French...I concur with previous posters on Spiral (Engrenages) brilliant series loved it.

Gettingfedupgrrrr · 01/02/2024 14:20

If you haven't watched Bad Sisters...(set in Ireland but taken from a Scandi book I believe) ...then make a point of watching it..loved it too.

CherryRipe1 · 01/02/2024 14:42

The US/Canadian version of The Killing is very good. Set in Seattle & quite scandi noir. It's on 4.

I watched Bad Sisters, yes. Loved it. There's a second season coming, apparently.
Is it from a book? The TV show was based on a Belgian original that Walter Presents also showed, the Out-Laws. That may have been based on a book though, I don't know.

Recommend the By the Lake trilogy on Walter presents: Vanished by the Lake, Killer by the Lake and Fear by the Lake (in that order!). All set around beautiful Lake Annecy.

Think I may have watched the first season, or started it but not finished for some reason. I do remember a thriller with that beautiful scenery.
