Scandi noir: suggestions

I need a good, bleak Scandi thing to get my teeth into. Doesn't have to be new to telly/streaming, just new to me. Please don't just tell me to check out Walter Presents – I try, sometimes, but I'm getting a bit noir-blind with choice!
Let me hear your actual personal favourites.

Those I have loved include:
The Killing (the original and best IMO)
Trapped
Borgen (Yes, I've seen the newer/comeback season, about Greenland, too)
The Bridge
Those Who Kill
The Out-Laws
Rebecka Martinsson Arctic Murders
Ride Upon the Storm
The Legacy
Floodland

I know not all of these are technically Scandi, or technically that bleak, but basically I mean quality foreign drama, ideally featuring combination of some or all of nice interiors, nice threads and windswept/snowy/dramatic/melancholic landscapes.

TIA!

DNA - think it's Danish, a child goes missing from a ferry.
Into The Woods - Polish Harlan Coben adaptation
Other posterd have mentioned Caliphate - loved this.

Violetparis · 25/01/2024 08:50

The Twelve - original Belgian version is good.

Seaoftroubles · 25/01/2024 18:08

I don't know if its still on Walter presents but l really enjoyed Tabula Rasa, a Belgian psychological thriller with a twist.

duc748 · 25/01/2024 18:27

I'd echo the praise for The Investigation and Deadwind, and chuck in Katla (Netflix). Also on Netflix, Post-Mortem: No-one Dies In Skarnes is witty and a bit different.

EveryOtherNameTaken · 25/01/2024 18:30

Try the film Border.

BobnLen · 25/01/2024 19:39

State of Happiness which is Norwegian about oil being discovered, it's not noir but it is good

colouringindoors · 25/01/2024 22:21

Valhalla Murders
A Nearly Normal Family

Walter Presents on All4 is a good source

colouringindoors · 25/01/2024 22:24

Stockholm Requiem

colouringindoors · 25/01/2024 22:26

Arctic Circle - All4 as above one

mamaca · 25/01/2024 22:49

Dicte was a good Danish one I watched a few years ago...I'm sure it was on Walter Presents at the time. Not sure if it is anymore though

mamaca · 25/01/2024 22:51

Also, not Nordic but a good-quality foreign drama is The Mafia Kills Only in Summer

Nonono11 · 25/01/2024 23:13

Not strictly Scandi - but Stellan Skarsgård is the lead role - River - I think it would be on iPlayer as it was originally on bbc. Also stars Nicola Walker. I absolutely loved it

PickAChew · 25/01/2024 23:31

Trapped has a follow up: Entrapped
Just watched Modus on Prime and really.enjoyed it.
We watched all of Deadwind (cue stale fart jokes) but it did get sillier and sillier. Typical Finnish low budget!
Enjoyed Chestnut Man.
1864

Moving well away from Nordic:
Cardinal (Canadian)
The Forest (French, great story, gets a bit woo, though)
Mystery Road (Aussie - they're quite good at noir, despite all the daylight)
Kleo (German. Killing Eve level of dark humor. Fab retro cars and outfits)

I liked The Hunt for a Killer (Swedish series, was in BBC I think) - based on a real life case from the 1990’s. Also rather bleak, but very good.
And The Investigation (Danish), based on the investigation into the so-called submarine murder.
Not sure where you can watch them now, but worth keeping a look out for.

Loved The Investigation. Glad you mentioned it because I couldn't remember the title.

Enjoyed both of these, too. There was supposed to be a sequel to Into the Woods but I don't think it ever happened.

I loved Dicte, but I don't think it's on Walter Presents any more.

I'd give another shout to Kleo too, I thought it was a lot of fun.

Celia24 · 26/01/2024 00:48

Deadwind is my favourite

marmiteloversunite · 26/01/2024 01:30

Baptiste is good.

Threewordseightletters · 26/01/2024 01:33

Witnesses - French but quite a noir feel as set in bleak northern France. Think it's on Prime

MarkWithaC · 26/01/2024 12:53

Thanks all. Seen a lot of these. I did really like The Twelve and Dicte.

Baptiste: love the character and actor but thought the show was disappointing. God love him, he'd have been better left as a supporting character!

I think I've watched two seasons of Trapped. Is Entrapped the third season? (albeit under a slightly different name).

I also enjoyed The Crimson Rivers, if there's anything else a bit like that. (crimes often based on myths/legends/folk tales; remote and unusual settings like convents and isolated boarding schools).

Wisting

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 26/01/2024 12:57

Follow the money , both series was excellent. I’m hoping it comes round again.

carkerpartridge · 26/01/2024 15:52

Jordskott might appeal as it covers the folk tales aspect you mention. It is a Swedish, police procedural set in the countryside and is unlike anything else I've seen.

Freysimo · 26/01/2024 15:57

Another vote for A Nearly Normal Family on Netflix (Swedish)

Sounds good, thank you. Sadly it's on Amazon Prime and not included in Prime membership.
