Suzywong sent me a link to a wonderful set of puke inducing recipe cards that featured all manner of luminous coloured meat and fruit 'salads' set in gelatine - yum

moondog · 19/03/2008 10:34

Oh dig it out Carm. That was ace.

Habbibu · 19/03/2008 10:34

We inherited this from a relative of DH's - I like looking at it for fun, but suspect that MP could reissue it pretty much in its original form to compete with delia...

dragonbutter · 19/03/2008 10:34

Voila! Have a good look around that site Moondog, it is classic, I lost a whole morning to it when she first sent it to me.

Overrun · 19/03/2008 10:46

I was thinking some more on this, and am probably going to make a very ageist comment here, but anyway:

Her new programme reminds me of how my Mum now cooks for most of the time. My Mum is a pretty good cook, she never really loved it, but made some lovely meals over the years.

Now that we are not at home and there are no children to cook for, and they have more disposable income, a lot of her cooking is a combination of prepared food and fresh ingredients often from Marks.

She knows how to cook, so can work out how combine things, how to cheat in other words to make quick meals for her and my Dad, as she says "I just can't be bothered any more"

Now I know that a/ Delia doesn't have children so no empty nest syndrome b/ always had a lot of disposable income BUT, I wonder if this is the age group that she is aiming it at? Women of a certain age who have cooked all their lives and just can't be bothered any more

moondog · 19/03/2008 10:46

lol lol
What was it aobut the 60s and gelatine????

moondog · 19/03/2008 10:48

Good point Overrun but i think she said it was for people who haven't a fucking clue 9not direct quote obv.) and are intimidated by swanky food porn on the tv (which is a valid point)

What doesn't add up is that they sure as hell won't learn any more by buying tinned mince and frozen onions will they?

Carmenere · 19/03/2008 10:49

I don't know, I think it was the 'magic' of convenience. My bf dad is in his 80's and has been a firm gourmet all his life, eats nothing but the best and yet, because of the magic element he loves the occasional packet sauce(like packet hollandaise)! I think it is something to do with powdered eggs during the war or something, I don't know.

Overrun · 19/03/2008 10:52

Interesting.... she may be sub consciously aiming it at her age group though moondog, whatever she say
I think if you really love cooking then its different, but Mum although she is a good cook imho, never really loved it, so more inclined to take short cuts. As you say carmenere, could be a generational thing in terms of magic of powdered eggs, instant ingredients. I think Delia's age maybe comes into why she is not bothered about conservation, no children, getting older etc

Carmenere · 19/03/2008 10:54

I think you are right overrun but cooking shows aren't generally aimed at those who can't be bothered anymore are they? I mean if you weren't Delia and you went to a production company with an idea for a cookery show using processed food aimed at those who aren't mad about cooking, I'd say you would have difficulty selling it. and that is why I think she has abused her position. This programme wouldn't have been made if it wasn't her.
Put it this way, she may sell a lot of these books to those who love her already but I doubt she will get any new readers/devotees from it.

Carmenere · 19/03/2008 10:56

Oh and I'm sure you are right, the fact that she has no children has to contribute to her not giving a fuck about diet, animal welfare or the future of the planet

Overrun · 19/03/2008 10:57

I agree Carmenere, she is abusing her position, and people obviously wrongly advised her as well. My sister had the book bought for her, and she is maybe more obvious target audience than baby boomer generation that I was speculating on.
She is 24, and keen on ready meals but likes to cook at weekends. So you would think that the book might help her cook a bit more during the week when she doesn't feel that she has the time. But no, she hates it, says that some of the recipes look alright if you replace fresh ingredients with convinience ones.

SueBaroo · 19/03/2008 11:07

I couldn't be doing with watching her anyway, she just looks so squirmingly uncomfortable in front of a camera.

But the faffty nature of what you're all describing sounds like I can be more smug about that than I usually am.

(If Dragonbutter has melted, is she now Dragonghee? [ponce])

Carmenere · 19/03/2008 11:19

As long as all the scum has been skimmed off she can be ClarifiedDragon

dragonbutter · 19/03/2008 11:22

Brrrrrr. I'm still in Aitch's fridge waiting for her to come back and let me out.
She is such a food ponce BTW, you should see the stuff she's got in here.....and a half used jar of dolmio white sauce!
Dragonghee or ClarifiedDragon? both very nice names. i will ponder.

Aitch · 19/03/2008 11:42

puts frying pan on hob, chops up onions and microwaved baked potato, goes to fridge for eggs and butter to make non-delia inspired quick spanish omelette for lunch.

hmmm... this butter looks a bit blue but smells fine otherwise. i think i'll use it.

dragonbutter · 19/03/2008 11:46
Shock
camillathechicken · 19/03/2008 11:49

my MIL told me off 10 years ago for making instant mash. i have never dared do it since, i shall set her on Delia.

Kindersurpise · 19/03/2008 12:04

at Hamlyn All Colour Cookbook, my mum has that one. Just checked on Ebay, anyone want one?

I missed Delia, thankfully. It all sounds revolting.

Bolognese is cooked for at least an hour in this house too.

Tinned mince

Reminds me of the yummy tinned Ravioli Mum used to give us.

Kewcumber · 19/03/2008 12:05

my mum made Delias shepherds pie (with fresh mash not frozen) using tinned mince. I have to say it was yummy!

I'm going to be run out of town now arent I?

Kewcumber · 19/03/2008 12:07

but don;t understand how her book is being positioned as food for the poor people who can;t afford to buy organic - isnlt it cheaper to use fresh mince than tinned?

camillathechicken · 19/03/2008 12:43

ooh, my mum bought me that book when i got married and she gave me her origional copy too ! it is fabulous! i love it

Iota · 19/03/2008 12:54

hmmmm I had a feeling that Aitch was wrong about dragon's milk being blue - obvious blue string soup confusion there - but didn't like to contradict without being sure of my facts as
I have never seen a dragon breast-feeding - I miust go to Ikea more often.
