I've been looking forward to this so much. Especially after the massive cliff hanger it was left on. I knew through interviews he's done that it didn't pick up in Australia again, but I'm disappointed so far. I can't seem to get into it and it seems so grey. Maybe I need to leave it and come back to it.

Of course it's fat-shaming! The comment about the actress having to be fun/jolly - compensating for the fact that she is 'tubby'

chattyness · 02/01/2024 11:04

Very disappointed with it this season, it's lost it's spark and they've made Helen very bland, she had more personality last season, but atm she seems to have lost her oomph! I'm only half way through it just now, hopefully she'll find it again before the end !

NaughtyBoyGeorgeMichaelJacksonBrown · 02/01/2024 11:20

I watched it all yesterday and I liked it. The gangstas, especially the mum, were a bit cringe but I liked the main characters and even enjoyed Ethan's daft input. The Ruari stuff was very dark and well done.

It went on a bit towards the end and got a bit silly but it was good overall.

hogmanayhoolie · 02/01/2024 11:56

Im loving it. Looking forward to the next episode

In fact I might binge

I disagree as it's stating a fact - nothing to be ashamed of - you can only fat shame someone if they're actually ashamed of being fat.

The comment about being funny was actually being critical of the route the producers had taken & nothing to do with someone being fat having to be funny.

BIWI · 02/01/2024 13:31

Fat-shaming has nothing to do with the person being shamed, and everything to do with the people doing the shaming.

I’m of the impression in this they’re trying to appeal to the ordinary woman, sending a not too subtle signal that you too, in your ordinariness and fatness, can have sex with Jamie Dornan 🙄
In the fall the wife was not what he desired. He had a type. Petite, thin, dark haired. That was how he supposedly kept his dark side hidden from her because he didn’t have the same desire for her.

If only! 🤣

I think it just stood out to me because both women look so similar, but that makes perfect sense, I might have to rewatch The Fall.

GlamMa · 02/01/2024 13:55

I couldn't see most of episode 1. Need to rewatch it and change the contrast as it was so dark!

theconfidenceofwho · 02/01/2024 16:23

We'll have to agree to disagree @BIWI.

IwantToRetire · 02/01/2024 17:59

I know I got irritated towards the end of season one by trying to be too clever, but seriously this was just complete rubbish.

It was like they had watched that Scottish series about the two brothers that started so well and just became so caught up in being clever it failed to make any sense.

They have so obviously written a script based on audience feedback about which characters stood out, and just built on that without thinking that was only relevant to that storyline. I know the ex boyfriend is good for a laugh, but getting him to fly to Ireland.

And all the Irish characters are such stereotypes. Its almost as though the joke is on us for accepting it.

Its as though it been written by immature schoolboys.

Embarrassing.

Plus I know think I must have a beard phobia. I ended up feeling quite sick.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 02/01/2024 18:24

@IwantToRetire I know that Jamie Dornan said there was no way he was dragging his family to Australia again for six months, and told them they would have to relocate it in Ireland. I guess the script had already been written and therefore had to be changed. For this reason, I think it felt clunky.

I agree about some of the characters. (The ex-boyfriend character drove me crazy the first time round) They are almost caricatures / farcical characters.

I also felt a bit the same about some of the Irish characters. It came across as a bit lazy and try hard both at the same time. I actually googled a couple of the cast at one point as I thought the accents seemed over-egged (like a poor impression), but they were Irish actors, so I don't know what that was about.

I've thought some more about the lack of on-screen chemistry with the two lead characters. I've come to the conclusion that they were obviously trying to step away from the old tired trope of ripping each others clothes off every other scene. Maybe.

Overall, I only really enjoyed the last two episodes when we were starting to get somewhere with the story.

Thanks - does that mean I should stick with it because it makes more sense towards the end?

PS I think I have a bit of a humour by pass, so wasn't sure whether I was meant to find it "funny"?

powershowerforanhour · 02/01/2024 19:35

They probably should have got Colin Bateman or one of the McDonagh brothers to write the script, instead of just "writing in the style of..." but overall I enjoyed it apart from

  • surely to God if he was being chased by the van in rural Wicklow he'd have been over the wall and up through the trees instead of running down the road
  • his "mother" is only doing a moderately passable impression of a Northern Irish accent (the actress is from Connemara)...granted it's a difficult accent to do properly and it's a better attempt than some but she's doing a working class Belfast accent and Jamie Dornan uses more or less his real accent which is not exactly "The Aldernices of Cultraaaaw" but isn't gangster Belfast either, he's from Holywood after all. (Haven't watched the whole thing just the first episode so don't know if there's going to be a "she's not his real mum!" twist but TBF if so, it's not much of a twist).

Cinematography was good and the acting was good, the two leads play their characters well and I can't think of anyone who would do better.

hogmanayhoolie · 02/01/2024 19:37

I've just finished episode 4 and am loving it as a black comedy

Well, I came to this thread to ask if it was feasible to jump straight into S2 without having seen S1 (which I guess may be on the i-player), but now, reading your comments... 😀

Season 1 was so good I've binge watched it twice! Reminded me of the Coen brothers' films. Definitely worth watching first. Also there are a couple of characters who appeared in the episode last night who were from the first series, so I think you need to know who they are.

FlyingCherub · 02/01/2024 19:43

Must have been a tough role for Jamie to return to seeing as he lost his Dad during the first series. Little wonder he didn't want to risk dragging his family to Australia again for another round.

I did enjoy the scenery but it felt a bit contrived in places. Looking forward to watching more and seeing if the magic returns.

Browncupboards · 02/01/2024 22:00

I'm enjoying it a bit more tonight

IwantToRetire · 02/01/2024 22:21

A bit late, but re do you need to have seen season 1 to watch 2.

I think if you have watched season 1 then what might seem an ill matched couple is entirely understandable. ie Helen was the only one (for what ever motive) who tried to help him as he struggled with having no idea who he was. (and of course allowed her to do detective work that she was not encouraged to do.) And allowed him to think he might just be an ordinary person, not some violent thug who had rival crimnals on his trail.

I am not sure how long it is meant to have been since they left Australia.

IRL do people permenantly lose any recollection of their earlier life afater a serious accident / knock on the head?

Cooroo · 02/01/2024 22:39

Four episodes in and I'd forgotten everything about series 1 but I'm loving it.

It's dark, it's massively unrealistic but it's funny too. The Garda subplot was so, so grim.

GrimDamnFanjo · 03/01/2024 00:52

Binged it. It's a long time since I've seen anything on tv with so many subplots!

duc748 · 03/01/2024 11:27

I thought The Fall was a terrible pile of old shite, and maybe Jamie Dornan put me off this first time around. Anyway, I blitzed all the way through S1 last night. 😀S1 is a lot of fun, even if it's largely a mish-mash of two better films. Then I watched the first ep of S2. And I can see why people who enjoyed S1 were disappointed. It all seemed a bit flat, even the action sequences.

BIWI · 03/01/2024 12:00

Although I'm enjoying this series, I did find yesterday's dragged on a bit, the whole searching for him round the island. And I shouted at the telly at least a couple of times 'hide from them'!

But now he's escaped, and Helen has discovered the grisly secret, I'm looking forward to the next episode.

cherrypickles · 03/01/2024 14:15

Loved it finished it especially loved the last frame!

Had to concentrate and still a bit confused about the apartment with the oven.

But it was funny dark and touching and ridiculous in equal measure. I like the odd couple idea and the odd police officer and Ethan. The contrast is great.

Bankholidayhelp · 03/01/2024 18:48

Binged it, loved it, loved the whole sub plot. The kitchen/ apartment sequence confused me to. And the last shot was great!

We kept shouting for him to get off the road.

I think Jamie would make a great James Bond or indeed Jack Reacher. The current JR is too beefy for me.

The writing duo are a talented pair.

Meditationspider · 03/01/2024 20:08

Surely he adores Helen, because she loves him even knowing he’s done really ugly things. They have bonded through some life and death experiences and through her eyes, he kind of gets a chance to redeem himself/be something other than a bad man. (And she is beautiful)
