Is there actually anything decent on TV this Christmas?

TV just seems unbelievably bad this year and that says something. I actually resorted to watching EastEnders and I haven't watched that since Larry lamb died. Where are all the Christmas specials and dramas? I was hoping they would have done a motherland Christmas special.

saltburn

If you enjoy quizzes, which fortunately I do, then you're fine. There's loads of Christmas UC/OC/Mastermind/ROHOG every day.

If you don't then there's
Strictly
Ghosts
Dr Who
A Ghost Story for Christmas
Mrs Brown's Boys (I know many people loathe it but it definitely counts as a Christmas Special)
and that's pretty much it.

TwigTheWonderKid · 27/12/2023 10:29

Call the Midwife? There's a new Agatha Christie on tonight.

SilverRingahBells · 27/12/2023 10:30

Oh yes, looking forward to the Agatha Christie.

SayNoToDoorToDoor · 27/12/2023 10:32

Dr Who
Lot 249.
Tabby McTat
The Boy, the Mole, the Fox & the horse
Royal Institute Christmas Lectures - on AI this year
The Mayfair Witches

All of the above are on iplayer.

Stuckinarut23 · 27/12/2023 10:52

Yeah not really into quizs or Agatha Christie or Dr who 😕. Strictly has just finished so not really interested in the Christmas special. There doesn't seem to be any Christmas comedy shows and yes I can't really stand Mrs Browns boys. The only thing I've recorded is the King's coronation. I know Christmas isn't about the TV but i miss shows like Only fools and horses and royal family

There’s Not Going Out Xmas special (comedy) as well as Death in Paradise (always has some comedic moments).
was quiz of the year last night, but thought was a bit rubbish - I’m too old for it now I think, but used to love it.

TheMarzipanDildoWithTinselDisguise · 27/12/2023 14:23

There is a dearth of comedy this year, I agree. I just rewatch all the old Christmas specials.

JamSandle · 27/12/2023 14:28

I thought it was an especially bad year for Christmas TV too.

CellarSeller · 27/12/2023 15:49

Death in paradise Christmas special was not great apart from Neville's mum.

Mmmkaay · 27/12/2023 15:52

Dodger has been pretty good (I think it's a BBC programme ) quite funny, easy watching. Ghosts Christmas special was disappointing I thought. If you've got access to sky Atlantic or Apple, I have been loving This Gilded Age and Slow Horses.

nutster · 27/12/2023 16:06

did you enjoy saltburn? i thought it was brilliant and would love something to equal it!

FedUpMumof10YO · 27/12/2023 16:06

Murder is Easy

Vera last night. Not very Christmassy but a decent episode.

Looking forward to the new series of The Tourist starting around New Year.

damn!!! anything else you enjoyed?

OldTinHat · 27/12/2023 16:13

You're not wrong, OP. Apart from the soaps, the only things I've watched are box sets on streaming services. Normal TV has been dire this Christmas.

Loveduvetdays · 27/12/2023 16:14

Yesterday on I Player, loved it!

thesnailandthewhale · 27/12/2023 16:22

The high light of Christmas tv for my Mum was the Morecombe and Wise Xmas special, first broadcast in 1971. 1971!!! Over 50 years ago and nothing better produced ... live tv is finished EnvySad

Mespher · 27/12/2023 16:32

I watched Call the Midwife, Eastenders, Strictly, The Masked Singer, The Castaways which I'm watching now, I shall watch the Agatha Christie thing tonight.

we will simply have to hugely agree to disagree on that.

mrssanchez · 27/12/2023 16:38

There's usually some decent films on but this year, not so much. There's a few good classics but the rest seem pretty much the same as last year. It's the most uninspiring Christmas tv guide I've ever bought!

festivetinseling · 27/12/2023 16:39

More channels than you can shake a stick at, and fuck all on any of them.

Literally the only things I watched were Johnny English, The Sound of Music and Raiders of the Lost Ark, the latter two of which I've seen loads of times before. Currently watching Ghostbusters.

PuppyMonkey · 27/12/2023 16:47

The terrestrial TV channels have been utterly awful so far this week, thank God we have streaming now. I don’t mind it so much when Christmas Day is a bit pants, cos you can never watch stuff properly anyway what with food, guests, falling asleep or whatever. But by Boxing Day I’m ready for a new drama or a big film premiere. Never happens any more.Sad

I watched Saltburn on Prime last night too and that was tremendous.

Not a big Agatha fan so not sure about this new thing tonight. Would prefer a Dickens tbh.
