Is there actually anything decent on TV this Christmas?

TV just seems unbelievably bad this year and that says something. I actually resorted to watching EastEnders and I haven't watched that since Larry lamb died. Where are all the Christmas specials and dramas? I was hoping they would have done a motherland Christmas special.

i’ve been recommended the swimmers?

FourLeggedBuckers · 27/12/2023 16:52

Well both festive Die Hards have been on, but that doesn’t really help you, OP. It hasn’t been the best year for festive tv, for sure.

Abhannmor · 27/12/2023 17:16

My family all love Dr Who. Alas it was shyte this year. The plot stolen from Labyrinth and a guest appearance from Jabba the Hut. Like East Enders on acid. Wooden dialogue too.

We ended up watching a Christmassy Fr Ted. And playing Whiplash .

Stuckinarut23 · 27/12/2023 17:42

I've not watched saltburn is that a series? Honestly there is nothing, no decent films or ones we have seen a billions times before. And no new dramas's . I've just looked and prime time TV tonight is bloody The repair shop! There is no decent comedies anymore. Seriously wondering why I bother having a TV licence!

Saltburn is a film, it's just come onto Amazon prime. I think it's best if you just watch it without knowing what it's about

Oldies but goodies (iplayer)
Good Life Xmas special (the one when Xmas was cancelled)
Motherland Xmas special
Blackadder special (mixed with Christmas Carol)
Dear God, completely forgotten about Eric Sykes and Hattie Jacques!
Not Going Out

All Creatures Great & Small reboot Ch5

Blood Actually (Johnny Vegas and Sian Gibson) on Gold, a bit long though

Death in Paradise had DH chuckling away, although Beyond Paradise was a bit lame

I would recommend Lucy Worsley on Sherlock Holmes (also enjoyed the short Mark Gatiss horror story)

Looking forward to Agatha Christie later...

SheilaFentiman · 27/12/2023 18:52

I’ve also taped the Mark Gatiss - that is a new drama.

SheilaFentiman · 27/12/2023 18:57

There’s a documentary on Caroline Aherne on iplayer if you are missing The Royle Family

HappilyContentTheseDays · 27/12/2023 18:59

Dreadful diet of repeats, some years and years old. TV has been dreadful, I quite agree....except for Vera last night. I so love Vera!!
Nothing else; even the news has been crap!!

ohthatstoohot · 27/12/2023 19:17

It's bad, isn't it?

We are currently watching Dad's Army and the best thing on yesterday was an old documentary about the Two Ronnies!

It's very good

PuppyMonkey · 27/12/2023 21:21

This Agatha Christie thing on BBC1 an absolute pile of pants so far, sigh.

BurntOutGirl · 27/12/2023 21:56

I was also disappointed with Christmas TV. Just repeats of repeats.

Had hoped to see Operation Mincemeat and the Lord of the Rings films

Instead got Harry Potter...again.... Sounds of Music....again.... Chitty Shitty Bang Bang..again...

Chickydoo · 27/12/2023 22:17

Saltburn far and away the best thing I've seen over Christmas. Agree with poster above, good to just watch without knowing too much.
I also enjoyed the BBC Charles third programme, was very interesting

Stuckinarut23 · 28/12/2023 00:39

It's awful, I've started re watching Motherland and This country. Any recommendations for something similar? I was watching celebrity chase Christmas earlier thinking I had deje vu 2022 repeat! Half of it it's the same shit just with Christmas added to the title. It doesn't help the weather is shit and the cost of living is expensive so stuck at home eating rubbish.

Fantastic Mr Fox on ITVX (Wes Anderson movie)

leccybill · 28/12/2023 01:03

I wish the Traitors started sooner and where's The Apprentice this year?
Disappointed no new Motherland either.

Still miss Gavin and Stacey.

Twonewcats · 28/12/2023 01:06

I've no idea why people keep saying it's all repeats. Some things are, but a LOT is new.
Eg xmas day -
Strictly, Call the Midwife, EastEnders, Doctor Who, Ghosts, Here We Go, Tabby McTat, Mog, Carols From Kings.
On top of that, Salzburg with Kanneh-Masons, Uni Challenge, Xmas Bake Off, Xmas Masterchef, Critics Masterchef, Ghost Story, Murder Is Easy.
Honestly, so much new content.
The production teams can't seem to do right for wrong

And most of it is absolute trash

Rummikub · 28/12/2023 03:53

I felt like the schedulers were taking the piss.

Scrooged has been on a lot over the last few weeks.

I did watch dr who and strictly ghosts.

But other than that nothing that’s on schedule tv was any good. Surely not everyone has access / can afford to pay for Netflix/ Apple / disney+ etc. So why aren’t the terrestrial channels doing better?

MenopauseSucks · 28/12/2023 04:44

@thesnailandthewhale

We watched almost 3 hours of Morecambe & Wise on Christmas Day as well! Really good tv but as you say, not exactly up to date...

Rest of it, pretty grim... did watch Vera which enjoyed & All Creatures Great & Small which was lovely.
Found the Agatha Christie Murder is Easy really soulless particularly as we'd seen Evil Under the Sun earlier in the day with Peter Ustinov as Poirot!

We mostly streamed from Prime & Netflix.

Oh & we tried to watched Maestro & gave up after 20mins. Just couldn't get into it. Why's it had such good reviews?

CoolShoeshine · 28/12/2023 04:52

Not Going Out Christmas episode was actually very funny (for once!)
Also loved 1% Club on Christmas Day and Would I lie to you

ohthatstoohot · 28/12/2023 05:05

Yes, I feel like the schedulers made a mistake with the new series of The Traitors - it should have been on during the Xmas-Hogmanay limbo. A captive audience. Everyone would have watched.
