Anyone watching? Apologies if I’ve missed the thread.

Well I’m only grateful st Timothy of Poplar was on hand to give the jabs instead of the school nurse 😂

Matthew was less sweaty this week I thought? But yes, unrealistic to think Trixie would still be working and he’d be happy with it.

Less realistic was any Irish adoption agency willing to give any info about children admitted at that time (and I speak as both the child of a nurse and someone admitted to an industrial school)

LaBelleSauvage123 · 28/01/2024 22:50

I agree with the comments that it’s had its day but I really enjoyed tonight’s episode. I was around Colette’s age when the moon landing happened - I remember being allowed to get out of bed to watch it and then the whole school watching it in the hall the next day. No one dressed up or wore moon glasses though - I don’t remember it being a party-ish thing.

On a more sober note, my aunt and MIL were both in TB sanatoriums ( sanatoria?) in their youth. My grandad’s brother died of TB at the age of 12 and when my grandad died ( in 1977) he was found to have a patch of TB on his lungs - I remember everyone being shocked.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 28/01/2024 22:52

Also how old is Jonty supposed to be?

Matthew first appeared in Series 10, which was set in 1966. So 2, coming up 3.

TooOldForThisNonsense · 28/01/2024 23:34

I wonder if Matthew will be killed off. Headache = brain tumour

Jitterybugs · 28/01/2024 23:47

Nancy’s story was all rather unconvincing. The ex nun from the orphange in Ireland is now conveniently a resident in a care home in England. Within 2 mins she was able to recall baby Nancy being handed into their care 20 odd years ago and remember the medical history of the family.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 28/01/2024 23:52

I've started watching series 1 again and it is startling how much better it is than the current stuff.
So much grittier and focused on the patients etc

Toddlerteaplease · 29/01/2024 06:48

The nuns who Nancy was brought up by, weren't the nicest of if I recall. That story line was ridiculous. She'd also be in big trouble for trying to give her daughter the BCG when it wasn't indicated.

Netaporter · 29/01/2024 06:59

@Toddlerteaplease having been taught by nuns throughout my own school life, I can confirm I’ve never met a nice one 😂

InMySpareTime · 29/01/2024 07:00

When was the last birth that Dr Turner wasn't called to (barring the hostage one)? The midwives used to be able to handle odd presentations, forceps, breech births, multiples etc and now they seem to call him out at the drop of a hat.
He never seems to have anyone waiting at his clinic either. Does nobody get ill in Poplar by the end of the 60s?
Matthew annoyed me most, he knows Trixie has been called out to a birth, so he spends the evening working himself up into a lather and gets annoyed that he actually has to parent his toddler. If his mum's so charitably minded she could pop round and watch Jonty while his "important meeting" happens, or all that paperwork could have happened in office hours. He just doesn't seem to love her or care for her at all. All very clumsily done too, and why is he so sweaty all the time?

Emmelina · 29/01/2024 07:10

I remember thinking when his wife died and he started calling on Trixie for advice/childcare - you’re after a replacement mother to the baby. Now she hasn’t dropped everything to be dutiful housewife and mother he’s showing his colours. He was an absolute dick in last night’s episode!

Toddlerteaplease · 29/01/2024 08:41

@Netaporter when I was furtling through the diocesan archives, I was shown a drawer from
A convent school. With leather straps and whips in it. Having said that, I've mentioned many lovely nuns.

blobby10 · 29/01/2024 09:50

Did I hear Matthew saying 'Nanny will you please come and look after this child' when Jonty wouldn't stop crying? It seemed like it was evening as he was doing his important paperwork on the sofa - where did the nanny go?

Toddlerteaplease · 29/01/2024 09:50

Yes, I heard that. So why was he so stressed?!

Yes exactly! Unless he considers Trixie the nanny!

Jitterybugs · 29/01/2024 09:58

I couldn’t figure out the call out to the nanny . Where was she and why didn’t we see her? Did Matthew break out in a sweat while she was having a toilet break and he had to pick up his crying son.

PuttingDownRoots · 29/01/2024 09:59

I thought the storyine was going to be Jonty ill but Trixie didn't come.

I agree. Barely any births either I notice.

Decafflatteplease · 29/01/2024 10:13

Following!

104c · 29/01/2024 10:31

I sort of weirdly enjoyed this episode, more than the others so far this series and certainly more than that awful Christmas special.
At least it felt a bit more gritty with the graphic TB death and the kids being taken away to the sanatorium. Doctor Turner giving CPR was actually in his remit for a change!!!
What's with all the flirting between Nancy and Tim tho? The arm touches and giggling?! Surely they cannot be angling for those two to get together - I could maybe see him with Rosalind, but more likely Trixies brother...

I noticed the giggling and arm touching between Nancy and Tim and thought oh god surely they’re not going to be a couple. I think Tim still looks like a gangly school boy. I didn’t realise till recently that he’s real life son of Dr Turner. I’m probably years behind everyone on that one 😆

Whatsthestorynow · 28/01/2024 22:04

Interesting that he liked your post. I wonder if he’s annoyed about being written out & Dr Turner forever staying in because he’s married to the writer!

It was strange, I received a Facebook notification last week that Olly Nix had liked a comment I had made on the Facebook CTM page. I thought the name seemed familiar but couldn’t place it. I clicked on the link which took me to the comment from two years ago, saw his profile pic and recognised him.

TooOldForThisNonsense · 29/01/2024 10:45

Is Timothy actually qualified now or still a student ?

TooOldForThisNonsense · 29/01/2024 10:48

It is so shite now but I still can’t stop watching. My husband doesn’t believe me that the first few series based on the books are actually relatively gritty and hard hitting. I’ll never forget the stories of Mrs Jenkins or the ship captain”s daughter

ArtificialElephants · 29/01/2024 10:51

Do you mean the son of Stephen McGann?

He's not - he's the son of the author Gilly MacMillan?

Sorry I must have misread that. Ignore me!
