Trixie is definitely leaving at the end of the series.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/01/2024 22:34

Surely in those still very hierarchical days, a fully qualified midwife would t socialise like that with students she was mentoring in. Even today we are careful about socialising with students who are on placement.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/01/2024 22:37

Not sure that Mrs Wallace and the rest of the church would be happy about their pastor, forgetting his wedding vows, and living apart from his wife. Their marriage would be sacrosanct to them.

I agree that Phyllis and Trixie wouldn't socialise with the pupil midwives, but now that Sr Frances has left, Nancy has no one else to socialise with and she's not that much older than them. And this is drama not documentary so I think it's an acceptable 'dramatic licence'.

AppleKatie · 07/01/2024 22:39

There’s an idea, Cyril losses his faith, stops hosting his church, begins an illicit affair with prim new blonde midwife and has a bad boy phase.

then bang, last episode of the series in walks Lucille with a baby (from his visit to Jamaica natch).

Christmas special could be nuns on tour in Jamaica again and they could take naughty Cyril and he could learn to find himself again with his wife and child.

But Cyril didn't leave his wife, she left him. They didn't come from the same country so no realist prospect of him staying on where Lucille went home to. It will be interesting to see if he starts a relationship with one of the new pupil midwives.

Jitterybugs · 07/01/2024 22:57

I quite enjoyed that episode. I found the scene with super rich Matthew ironing his own shirt a little unbelievable. While doing it he told Trixie there would be a pretty little sports car sitting outside as soon as she learned to drive. I think with that kind of disposable income they’d be paying someone to do the ironing 🧺

AppleKatie · 07/01/2024 22:59

Yes them living in a fairly small flat with him doing his own ironing is improbable. Have we seen the child lately either?

even the turners have a fancier house.

MadeOfAllWork · 07/01/2024 23:25

I think that the new midwife from Trinidad is going to potentially cause Cyril to question his faith, and he might have a fling with the blonde midwife.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 07/01/2024 23:30

Have we seen the child lately

The baby is almost 3, so has presumably been shipped off to boarding school.

Jitterybugs · 07/01/2024 23:34

Who were the parents of the little tot with Downs Syndrome who appeared in the shop with Fred and Reg? I wasn’t giving it my full attention and I didn’t notice where the baby came from.

Sunmoonandstarsforever · 08/01/2024 00:47

It’s the first episode I haven’t enjoyed and I usually love every minute of it.Very disappointing

IdaPolly · 08/01/2024 02:13

I'm disappointed that Dr Turner's negotiating skills weren't used to diffuse the gun situation.
I liked the new nurses. They seem interesting. The boarding school one was good with the birthing mum.
I read that they are going to explore Miss Higgins' past. Should be good.

IdaPolly · 08/01/2024 02:18

Violet mentioned Handy Andies. I remember those packets of tissues.

I didn't enjoy it at all either. It feels like it's limping on towards the finish when it should have given up. Also late in the day to introduce so many new characters.

Most births must have been in hospital by this time too. I know they've addressed that by use of the maternity unit and Dr Turner assisting in the hospital, and more community nurse visits.

petrawings · 08/01/2024 02:22

Trixie still working doesn't ring true.

Doubleraspberry · 08/01/2024 02:39

I’m also betting on a Cyril/boarding school romance and the first main character interracial couple. I liked the new midwives. They’ve been commissioned for two more series after this so not that late in the day for new people! Mercifully low on Dr Turner but now Timothy is being brought in for added male expertise - this is a poor turn of events!

The little boy (Jonathan?) Was in the Christmas special

Mr Mangle you mean or PC Noakes who disappeared when MH left

Yes I meant Mangle!!

I thought it was a good episode - focus back on the midwives. Though did notice Timothy being used for information dump now - we'll have two St Turners on our hands, but I think we knew that was coming.

and she also mentioned Rain Mates (??) - those concertina rain bonnets that were so popular those days. She didn't want people buying them at the hairdressers!

I don't think it's that unlikely, especially as she is an independent minded woman with a vocation. My mother worked after she married and only gave up when she had her first child.

That’s Robert. I can’t remember his parents names but the mother was an older woman who was going to give him to her sister to raise because she wanted a baby and couldn’t get pregnant. When he was born, the sister named him Justin and loved him but when he was diagnosed with Down syndrome, she rejected him. The mother took him back and called him Robert instead

Thanks for jogging my memory on that storyline. I do remember it now.

I disagree. Your mother wasn't Lady Aylward, or similar either, I'm guessing.

Others have said the same on this thread about it not ringing true at this time, for Trixie to continue to work there, especially to continue in her paid position.

Jitterybugs · 08/01/2024 09:48

Trixie made me cringe when the pregnant mother told her they were soon moving to their newly built house. Trixie had to go one better and saying they are moving and it will be a very exclusive place. Her terribly posh accent is even stronger in this series.
