Great old movies?

I’m sick of flicking through every pay site I’ve got and not finding anything new or recent I want to watch. Or being disappointed with an over hyped new film.

So, I’ve decided to watch old movies. I used to love them when I was a child. So, hit me with your favourite movies black and white, up to the 90’s. The must sees.

My favourite are;

Gone With The Wind
Waterloo Bridge
The Ghost & Mrs Muir

Little Women - June Allyson 1940’s version.
Gone With The Wind.
Singing in the Rain.
The Shawshank Redemption.
There are many others available on channels which don’t have sub-titles which I need.

@CrossPurposes thanks, that's the one!
@Katharineblum DP doesn't watch WD, but he's obsessed with How It's Made. The repetitive music on it really gets on my tits. But bizarrely about 3 minutes into the episode he falls asleep and I turn the sound off 😁
Glimpses is another series I like, but for some reason need to search for that, rather than set as series record.
I've just thought of another film I watched recently, again I can't remember the name. A little boy loses (or spends) his bus fare and walks home from school. He then makes up a story about the bus driver not letting him on the bus because he didn't have the money.
There's an investigation etc, won't say anymore as don't want to spoil it for anyone who watches it.
Love this thread!

As a devoted Talking Pictures TV viewer I was sure I must know this one but I had to Google it. It's Snowball with Dennis Waterman and it's on TPT Encore so that's our afternoon sorted.

Well depends on what genre your looking for but some of my own favourites:

Western - High Noon or Shane
Thriller - Day of the Jackal (1970's version) or Charade
Mystery - The List of Adrien Messenger or The Big Sleep
Comedy - Father Goose or Operation Petticoat
Drama - The Heiress or The Nun
War - Guns of Navarone or The Great Escape
Adventure - King Solomon's Mines (50's)
Sci-Fi - The Time Machine, Journey to the Centre of the Earth (50's)
Musical - The Red Shoes
Medieval/Romance - Ivanhoe

If you haven't seen the Red Shoes I would recommend this most strongly to anyone!

FixItUpChappie · 18/12/2023 00:05

I'll add a genre

Film Noir - Out of the Past or Mildred Pierce

FixItUpChappie · 18/12/2023 02:02

Sorry just a correction above the movie is The Nun's Story (1950's), definitely not to be confused with the horror movie The Nun

CherryogDog · 18/12/2023 06:45

WillowTit · 18/12/2023 19:43

Jumbojem · 19/12/2023 15:18

Kelly's hero's
A bridge too far
Casablanca
original Rear Window
North by North West
Good Fellas
Ferris Bullers Day Off
Fist full of dollars, A few dollars more
Rebecca

A lot of war films in mine it seems, bit of Alfred Hitchcock and Clint Eastwood! I like an action or suspense film over romance or musical.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 19/12/2023 19:31

Oh , I'm adding "Harold and Maud" to my list

smokingcarriageonly · 19/12/2023 19:53

The Katharine Hepburn film Summer Madness.

Such a good film. And you have reminded me of David Lean's versions of Oliver Twist and Great Expectations from the 40s.

Danfromdownunder · 19/12/2023 20:24

The Night of the Hunter was amazing
also the original Cape Fear also with Robert Mitchum
Wake in Fright

Tezza1 · 19/12/2023 20:28

@FitYeDaeinYeMadRadge "Leave Her To Heaven is a fabulous film."
I notice you have three Gene Tierney films on your list. She was quite the stunner, wasn't she? A unique beauty and very appealing. Sadly almost forgotten, and had a rather tragic life.

natura · 19/12/2023 20:30

I've found my people!

The Apartment
Bringing Up Baby
His Girl Friday
Love in the Afternoon
It Happened One Night

On Golden Pond is a lovely old favourite of mine, although not as old as some of the above.

And, if you want to settle in for a long evening, Lawrence of Arabia is a must!

Tootytoot78 · 19/12/2023 20:31

D.O.A
Laura
Night of the Demon
Dark Victory
Now Voyager

TiredOfYourNonsense · 19/12/2023 20:35

Stella Dallas
Whatever Happened to Baby Jane
Harvey

MillieMollyMandi · 19/12/2023 20:44

Charade - my absolute favourite Audrey Hepburn movie

Turmerictolly · 19/12/2023 20:44

muchalover · 19/12/2023 20:50

Look up a favoured actor on YouTube and put full movies after their name.

Alistair Sim
Errol Flynn
Hede Lamar
Ginger Rogers
James Stewart .....

Loads of them to keep you entertained for years and years.

I am a huge fan, can you tell? 😁 love her films, and she is easily one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen. I agree she did not have an easy life, and nor did her children.

Sometimes I look at Emma Willis and see a glimpse of her. Especially around the eyes. Does that sound daft?

Agatha Christie likely used an aspect of her life for one of her mysteries. I'll not say which because it is a spoiler if you know.
