Not sure which number we’re on now - 7?
In time for a Christmas special too, though last year’s will take some beating!

I don’t know, the funniest thing about Alan was his unintentional aggression 😂 I thought it was very well played, you could tell he was harmless but just his appearance and the way he spoke seemed so innocently aggressive 😂

Wingdingz · 27/11/2023 09:27

We've only watched the first two episodes - so may yet be proved wrong - but I can't believe they wasted the opportunity to have an unexpectedly combative Anne-Marie face off with Cathy at the birthday party. What was the point of building Anne-Marie as a character just to jettison her in a phone call we didn't even get to hear?

(Maybe because it would stray a bit too close to reality? And real cruelty? It's ever a fine balance in TDD...)

When I first heard Cathy was coming back I was most excited for the face-off with Anne Marie - they could have had a running theme going through the whole series of Cathy trying to win Colin back (maybe staying with Beth which would have had its own funny storyline!) but instead … they simply swapped characters and never mentioned it again after the first episode. The whole season just felt forced and like they couldn’t be arsed writing it.

dewclaw · 27/11/2023 09:41

Just happy it's back. I love Christine with a passion and miss Sophie too, but so glad I don't live there as I'm a miserable anti social whatsit. My neighbours three doors down would fit right in- always bemoaning the days when everyone was in and out of each other's places!

Wupity · 27/11/2023 11:03

I don’t know, I think if they had had a Cathy , Anne-Marie stand off and achy trying to win Colin back then it would have dominated the series too much and been all about them. The writers must have just decided they preferred Cathy in the group and swapped them back. Or maybe Anne-Marie actress no longer available?

I have watched a few more episodes now and it is still pretty good. I am also reminding myself to enjoy it as this may be the last series as one of the main writers has sadly died recently.

Scruffington · 27/11/2023 12:02

I feel like they were going over a lot of old ground in this latest series. I enjoyed watching it but I definitely didn't find it as funny as previous series.

MadisonAvenue · 27/11/2023 13:02

I’ve watched it all but was disappointed overall and noticed that I wasn’t laughing as much as usual.

I think it worked far better last series without Cathy. It was more real, a group of neighbours and friends with a few quirks who get together and it was still funny. Put Cathy in the mix and there’s nastiness and rather than be invited in she’d be the neighbour everyone avoided.

Last year’s Christmas episode in the coffee shop was brilliant, both in storyline and humour, but it wouldn’t have been the same if Cathy had been in it.

Also, when I looked at the new series page on iPlayer on Friday I was sure I saw a Christmas episode slotted in before the last episode but there’s nothing there now.

I will say that I thought the episode where Ian’s friend turned up was really crap 😂 such a waste of an episode.
i agree that this series hasn’t lived up to the previous series. Hardly any of it had me properly laughing.

coffeeeclairsarethebest · 28/11/2023 23:00

On episode 5 now and it's just not as good as previous series. Christine is still fab, but everything else just feels a bit forced.

The way they've made it has changed too. Now I don't know the technical stuff, but the way I'd describe it is previously it was filmed on film, and this time it's not. It feels much more sitcom-y than it before, and it's worse for it.
I'm a bit sad about it actually.

PantsToItAll · 01/12/2023 17:58

Agreeing with majority. It’s just not as funny as it use to be sadly. Cathy just slotted back in after the first episode and her old ways too. There was a lot of focus on Ian (friend then future in laws). I didn’t find myself laughing out loud mich although it was still watchable. After binging all 6 this week I started watching series 1 again. It’s such a contrast. Only 3 episodes in but was much better and more raw. Beth seemed a pushover still but also had some real moments of outbursts (even in fiest episode). The character of Christine seemed to have more of an edge (so far a lot of complaints and exaggeration about her health) and I liked her interactions with her daughter. It’s a shame that character doesn’t feature as would have been interesting to see how they got on as daughter/mum she has her own child. Plus she seemed friendly with Ian so that would have been good to explore.

I'm hoping the Christmas episode is funnier (if there is one!)

Wupity · 01/12/2023 19:15

I usually love Gordon’s character but he seemed to have very few good lines. And Ian was just a bit mean to him a lot.

MadisonAvenue · 10/12/2023 19:23

I’ve picked up the Christmas TV guide today and it doesn’t look like there’s a Christmas special this year. There’s just a small write up about the last episode of the series which is on the 22nd but that’s been on iPlayer for weeks.

I'll be gutted if there isn't a Christmas episode. I rewatched last years and it was so full of warmth. Like everyone else I'd have liked Anne Marie to have stuck around and then we could have met the newly circumcised Jackson 😁

AgentProvocateur · 15/12/2023 06:05

I’m maybe late to the party, but have any of you seen The Scotts? There are three seasons on iPlayer, and it’s really funny. Much funnier than this season of TDD.

Wupity · 15/12/2023 12:11

Thanks for the recommendation @AgentProvocateur . Glad to have a new series to check out

wildthingsinthenight · 15/12/2023 12:28

I still love it but thought the exit of Ann-Marie was so clumsily done. I liked her character and didn't want Cathy back.
We just never saw AM again and that was that. I mean..is Jackson back in his jeans and all healed up??

LOVED last year's Christmas special. Not surprised there isn't one this year.

I've a horrible feeling this season is the last 😪

I had a big operation end of November and bingeing old episodes is really getting me through my recovery.

Scruffington · 15/12/2023 12:34

The producers may well have wanted Siobhan Redmond to re-appear in a showdown episode. But as she was (I’m assuming) told that her character was being retired after only one series she may have told them to feck off, that she wasn't interested.

duc748 · 23/12/2023 22:39

This is a show that had always passed me by; I might have seen the odd episode. So I decided to start with the current new season (although I did watch S1, Ep1 first to give me some idea). So all I can say is, if it's not as good it was, it still seems pretty good to me. I agree the first ep didn't seem to work so well, but the next two, pretty funny.

thewooster · 24/12/2023 09:56

I've watched them all and love it. Loved the last series too and glad Cathy is back. Long may it reign!

Belindabelle · 25/12/2023 11:12

Disappointed there wasn’t a Christmas episode. I wish they would put the pilot episode on iPlayer. I loved that.

BigBouncyBaubles · 26/12/2023 02:37

Poor last series. Felt rushed.

Beyond excited! I love love this programme. Remembering Christine spending her points in the coffee shop by treating everyone to a panini last Christmas 🙂

This is my favourite episode by far! Christine is my favourite character. When she refuses to sit on stools because they’re not Westlife and the comments about Build a Bear have me crying 😂

WandaWonder · 26/12/2023 03:26

I was shocked Cathy was leaving then thought it was too much about her so was pleased

Then got used to it without her, but now she is back it works more

The carvery one was my favourite of this series

The Westlife line has to be up there as one of my favourite comedy scenes ever 😂😂 The whole episode was brilliant.

Saw this the other day in Doon Mackichan’s Instagram

I discovered this series last night and was pleased to find it but also disappointed to see there is no Christmas episode!

The first episode had great potential but I can't help but think they preferred Cathy to AM and therefore got her back. She's so annoying. I wanted Colin to tell her to feck off.

Christine is the funniest for me.

I must admit I have been LOLing
