Whoop s2 is back

I enjoyed s1

Link here. https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4262214-TIME-SUNDAY-BBC-9pm-no-spoilers

Assume s1 is on iPlayer so worth a watch if haven't seen

Don't think they are linked as such as different characters this time apart from Chaplin

The series is an anticipated follow-up of the first season, which saw Stephen Graham and Sean Bean take on lead roles as a conflicted prison officer and a former teacher consumed by guilt and demons from his own past.

According to the synopsis: "Time is a moving and high-stakes portrayal of life inside a women's prison. Arriving at Carlingford Prison on the same day, Kelsey (Bella Ramsey), Orla (Jodie Whittaker) and Abi (Tamara Lawrance) are thrown together to face an unfamiliar world.

"But even with the ever-present threat of violence within its walls, they discover that an unexpected sense of community, and a shared understanding, still might be possible."

Reprising her role for season 2 is Siobhan Finneran, who most recently can be seen in The Reckoning (https://www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/reckoning-release-date-jimmy-savile-bbc/), and will be once again starring as prison chaplain Marie-Louise.

Speaking about her return to the series, she said: "I am delighted to be returning for Time 2. It was a privilege to be involved in the first series and t
o be asked back is an honour, the scripts are again heartbreakingly brilliant."

I’m just watching part one. I worked in a male jail for a short time. A few inaccuracies but some things are realistic.
The red headed nurse I’ve seen on something - maybe Soldier Soldier?

She was in Benidorm. I can't remember the character name but she was a character who came to the resort with her friend (who snogged the ginger son of Tim Healey). The ginger nurse always looked fabulous.

As you can tell I can't remember any names 🤣

VivaDixie · 10/11/2023 09:29

I am 2 episodes in and really 'enjoying' it. My friend used to work in the Mother and baby unit of a prison. I would imagine she isn't watching tbh. She was brilliant at her job but it was hard going. She would be removing a child from their mother to go into care them go home to her boys (and hug them really tight). Heartbreaking

That's a tough job @VivaDixie

I thought it was a bit ridiculous. Dr Who and her rather gormless " oh it was just me leccy" nonsense that would not have really seen her anywhere near a prison and then of course the black woman wasn't allowed to play a villain by the BBC she had to be another victim of the system/ white privilege according to McGovern who has probably never been near a prison and imagines them full of poor misunderstood innocents he needs to save but not by actually doing anything expect by blaming other people

Paul2023 · 10/11/2023 23:39

Agree- I can’t see many situations where a judge would send a single mother to prison for nicking the leccy..
The cost to putting the kids in care and all the other factors!

I think the point is to show that anyone can end up in prison..

Piggywaspushed · 11/11/2023 05:58

But statistically that isn't true. There are more women in prisons for relatively minor crimes than men, proportionately. And most of them are mothers.

Rebecca, I suggest if you find McGovern not to your tastes, and know that in advance, it might be best not to watch his programmes.

As for McGovern never having been near a prison, here is a quote:

“I’ve never been in prison. I’ve visited lots of prisons in my life and done lots of workshops there, but I’ve never been in there as an inmate.

For anyone interested , I found this really interesting as an appraisal of S1

Stealing leccy for 6mths equals prison

Does seem weird

It surely does.

Katrinawaves · 11/11/2023 17:40

I thought it was really well done.

With regard to the sentence for the JW character, the whole point was that she didn’t expect to get a custodial sentence - it didn’t even cross her mind that could be the outcome.

In fact, she got much less than the maximum sentence - the programme didn’t give any details for how long she’d been doing it and whether she wasn’t paying anything at all or paying less than was due so there’s no way of knowing if the actual sentence was unrealistic.

Good link here though about the law and range of sentences possible for this in the U.K.

Yes, I think we are just supposed to accept that there three women are in prison as a statement of fact. It is for us as viewers to be shown some consequences of that for women in society. I am sure each of the three women represents a type of woman you might see inside - young, abused and manipulated, working class and driven into poverty , suffering form mental health trauma (I'm assuming about the latter as I am guessing the backstory for our third character may be padded this week).

To come back to Rebecca's comment. 'The black character' (Abi - she has a name) has the fewest 'victim' traits. She is the one we have seen being violent, she seems to have the most strength of personality. Most importantly her race seems coincidental to casting and white privilege has not come up at all. It hasn't been mentioned once. The other two leads are white. She does not appear to be in prison because she is black It's you that sees her race, Rebecca, and thinks it is part of some sort of racial bias BBC thing . I haven't seen the script but I actually bet the race of the characters isn't specified in the script, . The only character who has any cultural identity specifically mentioned is Orla whose Irish name was picked up on by Marie-Louise. If anything, McGovern's tendency is to focus on Catholicism in his writing. What would you say about Abi's characterisation if she were white?

The drama would not be nearly so interesting if it is was a load of hard women being nasty.

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/11/2023 09:05

I wonder if we find out what Abi did tonight 🥲

Just reliesed Lou is Julie GRAHAM. How did I not notice this before esp as she is in payback as well and watching that

I would wager that the women imprisoned for minor offences as you say , have probably committed multiple offences before.
Probably on licence or a suspended sentence, meaning they have to go into custody.
Only 10% of the prison estate is for women, there’s isn’t a great deal of prison places for women.
Clearly you can go into jail for stealing electricity, but I’m sure sending a single mother to jail is a last resort.

Paul2023 · 12/11/2023 09:26

One mistake I noticed was when the women prisoners were being escorted to hospital.
There are always two prison officers on an escort.
One is handcuffed to the prisoner at all times, the other is there to escort and oversee everything.

Jewel1968 · 12/11/2023 12:36

I have finished it and have a question. What time/day can I post my question to avoid spoilers?

Tonight at 10pm @Jewel1968

Looking forward to tonights but am surprised it's the last one , I thought we were all just getting into it .

Jimmy McGovern does brilliant dramas , a lot of research must be involved in them all. Cracker , from the 90s was excellent .

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/11/2023 14:49

Oh that was good

So we found our abi story. Was as I said and pnd bless her and quite frankly a fucking useless unsupportive husband

Maybe if he listened and supported more then baby Daniel wouldn't be dead 🥲

Poor Kelsey losing her Daniel but she would have got him back hopefully

Glad Adam got sent down for 10yrs +

Orla. Shame we didn't see her get a house and job maybe 3mths later

And that Lou's son came and she spoke to him and wanted to see her again

Wingedharpy · 13/11/2023 00:05

So, so moving.
I sobbed all the way through it.
There but for the grace of God go any of us and, IMHO, it all starts with the family you are born into.
Some people really don't stand a chance in life.

martha4clark · 13/11/2023 08:37

I was actually so glad that it ended when it did, I thought there was ten more minutes to go and was dreading more disasters for either of the women. The acting was fantastic throughout. My heart went out to all of these women.
