I think Ella just hasn't had much life experience other than her own transition. The others in the conversation at the dinner party - Nat, Porscha, Terrence, Thomas, Ros - had all been in love before, or been in serious relationships where they had strong emotional feelings and had been vulnerable and got hurt.
When talking about it, the pain was still quite raw for some of them. They had a connection, they understood each other. Ella really didn't have a clue what they were on about as her pain has been related to her relationship with herself, not others. And her pain is still raw too.
I think Nat is right, they need to talk much more about things other than Ella being transgender and needing acceptance. Nat can't relate to that. They need other, deeper connections and I'm not sure they'll find them within each other. I'm also not sure that he's bothered about putting in the effort because, at the end of the day, he clearly doesn't find her attractive but is in the difficult position of not being able to say so.
