What is wrong with people who go on Grand Designs?

Seriously, time and time again it's the same thing. Why do people feel they need to build a house the size of a cinema complex and then moan when they run out money. Most of these things could be 10-20% smaller and you wouldn't even notice. Don't these people understand that materials like wood and concrete cost money so buy less of them and the house will be cheaper.

Speaking of which, last night was a classic case... we haven't got any money, but we bought this copper bath for our bedroom and this (frankly disgusting but I'm guessing ridiculously expensive) gold and black marble for our kitchen.

It struck me the reservoir building was big enough to build a reasonable house in, maybe with a smaller extension to the side. It certainly looked twice the size of my three bedroomed house on it's own.

And of course five minutes after they started they announced they were having a child. What brilliant timing...

I can barely remember what the inside of this weeks house looked like. Most of the time they seemed to be looking out of the windows at the trees. Maybe it was too boring to film?

Last nights was a bit annoying, they kept going on about how he is a 'dedicated father' 'everything is for the kids', isn't that the same with every parent...?

I agree.
Also I wondered if the mothers of the children had the same view - spending money on a new build rather than just refurbishing the bungalow.

AdequateDesign · 06/10/2023 12:30

I have absolutely no way or right to know about their relationships and often the Production Company have a story they will force the actual footage down that maybe just a grain of truth.

But I did think the older lad explaining to the younger step brother that he'd be proud in years to come to bring back girls was a very old school motivation.

RobynRB · 06/10/2023 12:59

Yes, terrible how he just assumed his brother is heterosexual...

Ah yes - but when a man does it, everyone must applaud and admire him.

AdequateDesign · 06/10/2023 13:23

They need to keep that extra caravan bedroom,. It will be in the catch up episode, could be the grandmother or the dedicated father but one of them will be impregnated by Kevin's mere presence. The patter of tiny feet by Christmas.

Mooserp · 06/10/2023 13:28

I thought that was rather creepy and I'm disappointed they included it. It didn't fit with the wholesome family vibe.

Implication was that the house would help him get girls to have sex with him

LadyBird1973 · 06/10/2023 17:03

Teenage boys say stuff like that to their brothers all the time - it's not weird or sinister

I know boys say stuff like that, but I don't think it should have been included in the broadcast.

I agree, I didn’t like that.

Bloody revisit already!

It was a good week for the GD drinking game though:
Over schedule by years
Change of structural engineer
Planning consent issues
KM using confectionery as example
Taking on work themselves to save money
Living onsite
Roping in friends
Eco-twaddle

What I don't get is why they didn't save any more money up for their budget in the intervening years. He could have done some plumbing while they were waiting for an approval on the design, and she could have sold some commissions. That would have at least offset some of the material cost increases.

Fizbosshoes · 14/10/2023 14:18

I found this week quite different. They had a much smaller budget and worked to that....and then waited to complete the whole thing when they had more money.
(And used salvaged stuff for interiors rather than shelling out even more for a high spec interior)

...And no baby Kev in the mix either!!

LadyBird1973 · 14/10/2023 14:31

I enjoyed this week's too. I really liked their house and her tiles were beautiful.

Howtohideasausage · 14/10/2023 15:51

I really liked the revisit. The house was the right size for them and her business, it had been well thought out and made the most of the plot it was built in. I also really likes the salvaged floors and the all the mid century furniture. Delightful. It was the complete opposite to the that mausoleum built two weeks ago-and the people weren’t annoying!

JaneJeffer · 14/10/2023 16:37

I'm just here to say I love the title of this thread 🤣

Toddlerteaplease · 25/10/2023 21:10

How on earth have those weeks family got planning permission for that hideous carbuncle. Surrounded by beautiful Victorian houses.

AtmosAtmos · 25/10/2023 21:27

Just promoted me to watch - running late obviously, come in late so don’t know what it is due to be.

Toddlerteaplease · 25/10/2023 21:41

A blended family moving into a house built on the site of two garages. Obviously it's gone over budget and overrun.

Toddlerteaplease · 25/10/2023 21:42

A lot has been said about how happy the adults are. But I wonder how happy the daughters are.

But they are still going to buy tiles from Marrakesh. I wonder how long they will take to deliver to Hackney and how many will be broken when they arrive! Oh, four to six weeks apparently.

I can’t help wondering about flooding, what with all the rain we have had…..

chuffachuffchuff · 25/10/2023 21:46

I'm annoyed they're over budget and "have no money" yet their off buying the perfect tiles abroad!

dingit · 25/10/2023 21:50

Glad I've found this after muttering to myself if their budget is that tight why are they pissing around in Morocco

viques · 25/10/2023 21:53

Oops, did they forget a letterbox in their exquisite front door?

Pipsquiggle · 25/10/2023 21:55

One of the daughters will be camping in lounge!
