Sex Education series 4

Drops today on Netflix. Is anyone else looking forward to this?

The first 2 series I felt were really good and highlighted so many important issues. The 3rd series however felt a bit forced and like they were trying to cram as many current and relevant issues into it as possible. Plus the "evil" head teacher felt a bit silly too.

What do we think will happen this series?

I've just started watching it. Erm, I'm not sure so far. I think it might have gone up it's own arse a little bit.

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 21/09/2023 11:59

What has happened to sex education? I’m not impressed so far struggling and only on the first episode! Please let it get better.

Imamumgetmeoutofhere · 21/09/2023 12:06

I feel the same sadly

I loved the first two, wasn't so sure on the third. Didn't realise there was a new series so might start watching. Is Ncuti Gatwa still in it?

Yes and he is as fabulous as always

I'm on episode 3. I still adore Eric, Aimee, Maeve, Jackson, Isaac, Adam, Jean and Otis (even though he's always pissed me off a bit) and will keep watching to see how their storylines pan out. Missing Jakob so far.

But why do they feel the.need to make almost every character Queer? Younger folk watching this will be feeling like freaks if they are straight. There's always been an element of the ridiculous about the show but I still loved it anyway. Now it's verging on farcical.

winteriscoming2022 · 21/09/2023 13:44

Just started it and finding it crass, crude and tedious. Such a shame as loved one, two and three

MermaidEyes · 21/09/2023 14:56

This annoys me too. My kids tell me it's the complete opposite to when I grew up. Back in the 80s/90s you were a freak if you were gay, now you're a freak if you're straight. Everyone has to be 'something other than straight'. Shows like this don't help. I know of teens pretending to be gay or bi because they want to fit in with the 'norm'. Why can't people just be who they are? Anyway, rant over. Season 4 is on my watchlist now.

wow! Now you know how "queers" feel when we watch something where everyone is straight. There is plenty of straight representation on TV

Pinkbonbon · 21/09/2023 15:52

All I could think through that first episode was that if I'd had to go to that school I would have gone full 'We need to talk about kevin'. At the very least, my eyebrows would be lost in my hairline from rolling my eyes constantly.

As for the everyone being all woke and gender/sexuality experimental ect...thing...yeah...it's like 'Skins' did with drugs. Everyone taking drugs as if it's something that everyone does just because they are teens.

Though my feeling is that its actually poking fun at this new, exaggerated version of the norm.

itsmyp4rty · 21/09/2023 16:38

I don't really like the way they portray the girls as all loving absolutely enormous vibrators and are all apparently gagging for it and having the most amazing screaming orgasms every single time they have PIV sex. It's all hugely performative and really not helpful in the messages it gives out IMO. And now I agree it's really gone up it's own arse. All that said I'll probably still watch the new series.

Yes I agree with that one. It seems to be portraying that woman always come from PIV which we know isn't true which will cause some people to wonder what's wrong with them.

And goes against all the advice that Otis and Jean give too

Watched the first episode, are we meant to find the new students annoying?

Still love Eric. Such a great character and so well played.

JulianFawcettMP · 21/09/2023 22:21

I loved this previously. Up to episode three and very uncomfortable with one character extolling the virtues of top surgery. It's ok for some but such a serious issue

Pinkbonbon · 21/09/2023 23:16

Check the subtle drop of the phrase 'birthing parents' by the doctor to otitis(is? Or 's...or s'... lol) mother a few episode in too. Like, fuck off.

Littlepinkstarsbyradish · 22/09/2023 02:07

There are so many shows with entirely straight characters 😂
my friendship group at school was lgbt, almost all my friends were queer. Not cos the school was all queer, just because we found each other and that was our crew

you might find it weird, I find it refreshing to see my experience on telly for once

RachelGreensHair · 22/09/2023 03:46

I fast forwarded most of it expect the bits with Aimee and Isaac (love), Sean & Maeve (heartbreaking) and Adam (we need a spin off with his life of the farm). I do get distracted at how old they look, Connor Swindells is 27 and looks it!

Mooserp · 22/09/2023 10:25

Ncuti Gatwa is 30! He does a great job of acting like a teenager.

I think the diversity aspect is one thing, but the lack of normal teenage behaviour (e.g. gossiping) is another. It's a bit creepy.

(I have only watched 1 episode)

Timeforachange67 · 23/09/2023 18:55

Minor irritation alert…did Eric always call Otis “Oatcake” as much as he is this season?

Imamumgetmeoutofhere · 24/09/2023 12:07

Well I have finished the series. I cried my eyes out so many times this series and I must admit I changed my mind a few times regarding loving it or not. But it ending with my wanting more and wishing it wasn't ending

I really liked it but I wasn’t happy that they showed every gay character being loud and flamboyant.

I also knew they were gonna give the money to Cal. I really did not like that character

FlamMabel · 24/09/2023 12:41

I've just finished it, stuck it out in case there was some sort of "and I woke up and it was all a dream" moment, alas not. I thought it was genuinely terrible. Have they changed the writing? It was sooo preachy and with ishoos that any plot was mostly lost and superfluous to a weird agenda.
New characters odd, under developed and one dimensional and based on some sort of woke check list. I felt that some of the actors actually realised how crap it was and were just seeing it through. Massive disappointment. (And don't get me started on the trans characters/agenda, that was frankly bizarre).

Pinkbonbon · 24/09/2023 15:40

I'm normally of the opinion that people should transition if all other routes have been explored to tackle gender dysphoria and not panned out.
But I was watching this thinking- This is a seriously disturbed person who needs actual therapy and help. And instead she's told 'oh yeah, top surgery will solve all your problems', no need to oh, I dunno, actually talk with a professional?

Like, it's not ok to glorify surgery. Let alone for a child.

myfavouritemutant · 24/09/2023 23:54

I didn’t get on with season 3 at all but i’ve surprised myself by really loving season 4 - though on a superficial level. Though I did take it as a bit of a parody.
i really enjoyed Adam’s story and absolutely loved Eric’s wrestles with his faith and church.
But pp’s are absolutely right about some of the issues if you stop and think about it on a deeper level.

Almahart · 25/09/2023 16:09

Just finished it. The last episode was unbelievably bad I thought.
