Drops today on Netflix. Is anyone else looking forward to this?

The first 2 series I felt were really good and highlighted so many important issues. The 3rd series however felt a bit forced and like they were trying to cram as many current and relevant issues into it as possible. Plus the "evil" head teacher felt a bit silly too.

What do we think will happen this series?

I'm going to go against the grain here and say i liked S4 and really enjoyed the ending. i really didn't enjoy season 3 at all and felt they had very 2d characters in it. The new characters i'll admit i didn't care for much and found them a bit redic but i did like the revelation that Abbi was so positive cos she was scared of dealing with reality. I do know someone who was toxically positive and was very similar to Abbi (and just as annoying).

Main characters

  • Didn't feel there was much development of Otis but i think people have been a bit unfair to him. he did let maeve go even though he wasn't happy about it. I never liked the Otis and Maeve relationship but i did like how respectful and realistic their ending is. It's not always a perfect happy ending but it was the right thing for us.
  • With Maeve i did enjoy this storyline. I have lost my own mum and also lost someone close to me in a similar way to this (not my mum) and can understand the chaos and confusion in her mind and the total shock. i'll give massive credit to emma makay for this
  • Cal - I really disliked Cal in S3 and found them very one dimensional and causing arguments for the sake it and really irritating. but i actually liked them a lot more this season. i found their mums response really moving. she is trying to understand her child but doesn't quite grasp the concept and really just wants to does want to help her child who she can see is in pain but doesn't know what to do about it. I didn't get the impression that everything was resolved by the top surgery. it's a long way to go but it seems as though they have support and love there.
  • I didn't like Jean's arc and i found Joan a little irritating and found her storyline of abuse very underworked. it only got mentioned in the penultimate episode and then barely used. would have been better to discuss early on and developed her character a bit more. she was just a spoilt brat tbh. Jean was just a shadow of her former self and nothing like the jean we'd seen in previous seasons
  • The Viv and Jackson storylines were ok but honestly don't think i would have even noticed if they weren't there. And i loved both these characters (and their friendship) in the previous seasons.
  • The Groff Family - loved this storyline and with the tractor i thought "oh this is it, Adam's screwed up again and it's gonna be all sad and mopey". I love that Adam found something he's passionate and good with. it was really beautiful to see him grow as a character again
  • Aimee - she is my queen and it was amazing to see her get stronger in herself. she's always had the worst self-esteem issues and it was lovely to see her finally have some faith in herself and i think her relationship with isaac was great - the first one based on an actual meeting of the minds than just looks and sex. and he was so gentle and kind and understanding of her.
  • Eric - well the god thing was just daft but at the same time it was so Eric. it was nice seeing him exploring himself outside of Otis' sidekick and being with people who understood that side of him. i actually think he'll make a good pastor and i really understood where this was coming from and loved seeing his family loving him and supporting him in every way

I loved it! The hyper colour and strong characters are exactly how teen life feels. Larger than life. I loved the headteacher at the end saying ‘what a waste of time’ as that must be what it must feel like as each year of teens goes on the same journey!

cal - I can see that happening. I know parents very much hostage to their teens massive feelings at this stage. And other teens would 💯 say yay we can raise money for you.

The video games scene at the end highlighted that Otis was still quite immature in some ways and I think he behaves exactly like some
teen boys. He might yet grow up to be good enough for Ruby.

loved the teacher scenes in the funeral. Aimee shouting at the builders. Isaac being the intelligent one as ever. Viv dealing with her toxic relationship. That last episode dealt with so many issues and with humour. Amazing writing!

One thing confuses me - the decor and the "vibe" is 70s , early 80s

But the themes are now . The technology is now .

We’ve discussed this a lot. I think it’s actually meant to be “timeless” ie can’t pinpoint it to any time. The actor that plays Roman has a huge tattoo of 2001 (the figures, the year) across their chest but they’ve changed that to say “ABBA” in the programme. It’s like they don’t want any references at all to when it’s set.

(When I say we I mean dh and I).

Jean's house is beautiful. I have coveted it from the first season. Envy Probably the first time I've used the envy MN emoji to actually mean envy.

I came across the series by accident 10 days ago, because season 4 was showing as #1 on Netflix in France and I was curious. I have binged the lot.

But I'd be really interested to know how old people are on this thread, because I'm in my mid-fifties and I have laughed, cried, thrown my hands up in frustration, sworn at the telly, nodded sagely, recognised myself (and friends) through our teenage years, then recognised myself as a parent, then in turn recognised my children and their peers.

I’m 42 and dh is 36. We’ve loved it for all the same reasons as you.

Older than you, @Imamumgetmeoutofhere.

now i have adverts!

Loved Adam's arc and would have liked a lot more of him.
Love Eric always and forever. But would have liked more of his family. Love him and Otis in the final ep. Their dancing!
Some of Jean's moments really hit hard in the depiction of that newborn fog
But the setting shift didn't make sense. Moordale was a great background and they got rid of lots of the minor characters who really made it. Cavendish was entirely ludicrous and the whole trans thing was, as a PP said, appallingly overdone.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 15/10/2023 08:55

i think series 3 was heading that way
but i am enjoying series 4 so far

MrsLargeEmbodied · 16/10/2023 19:10

just finished it,
loved all your reviews,
did not like the trans story line, didnt cotton on until the ending that Abbie was male
so glad to see Adam, Maeve, Eric and Aimee back, and Adam's dad
i dont think Otis didnt want Maeve to leave necessarily, but he just reacted to his mum's involvement, quite understandably,
i also hoped it was Jacob at the end.

looking forward to Dr Who now - Ncuti Gatwa

He was majestic in the final episode, no?
