Is your TV on all the time and do you turn out of when you have visitors?

When I was younger my mother would have the TV on all the time... if she was awake the TV was on. I'm not the same... the TV is never on in the day and only in the evening if we want to watch something specific. This is in no way a stealth brag...I spend hours faffing about watching tik tok and playing games on my phone. I was watching a tik tok video yesterday and there was a lovely family reunion in someone's house and the massive TV was blaring in the background... quite spoilt the moment! Also when we visit my MIL she never turns the TV off and I find myself completely zoning out of the conversation and watching something I would never usually watch... like one of those police or ambulance programmes...I then get completely engrossed in the programme and then miss bits cos I have to rejoin the conversation!

No, my TV is only on when I’m watching it. Can’t stand the constant noise from it when I’m not.

Fifireee · 02/09/2023 07:25

I do home visits as a teacher and you’d be amazed how many people don’t switch off the TV. I have to shout over it.
My in-laws never turn it off you have to yell over it. I don’t think people notice it. I’m quite sensitive to sound but lots of people aren’t.

NegativeCreeep · 02/09/2023 07:26

No, we’re like you; it’s only on in the evening. I do, however, always have music playing. I don’t like a quiet house and need some sort of background noise

FrenchandSaunders · 02/09/2023 07:27

TV only on when we want to watch something. Music always on.

User13865890 · 02/09/2023 07:29

Ours is on a lot but I would switch it off if I had visitors.

LaunchingTeabag · 02/09/2023 07:30

My mum was the same - her tv was always on... from the minute she got up to the moment she went to sleep.

I only have it on for an hour or two each night. I do play music a lot though while I'm crafting.

Runnersandtoms · 02/09/2023 07:32

My in-laws have it on all day and don't switch it off when we visit. It used to drive me mad especially when the kids were small as they would just sit there and watch whatever crap was in because in our house we only have the telly on to watch a specific thing.

OHVanessaShanessaJenkins · 02/09/2023 07:32

I was invited to a friends house for coffee and cake. She had baked. 3 of us invited.

lovely.
Got there, cake cut, coffee made, followed her into the living room. Her husband was in there, TV on.
We began to chat, so he turned the TV sound UP. It was the Simpsons on.
Apparently he couldn’t hear it over our talking.
Besides, she began to watch it and all conversation stopped.
Absolutely zero awareness that this is just batshit.
We all very quickly made our excuses and left. Never ever went back.

I know people who have the TV on all day, in the same way someone might have the radio on all day. Just background noise while they are doing other things.

I only have TV or radio when I actively want to watch or listen but that's cos I find it super distracting and I'd never get anything done!

I mostly WFH and dread going into the office cos colleagues all want the radio on and I find it so hard to work!

Purpleavocado · 02/09/2023 07:33

MIL is like this, and it's always 30 year old quiz shows

Cornishclio · 02/09/2023 07:34

I only have it on when I want to watch something and switch it off with visitors unless they are staying for a few days and want to watch something.

Ragwort · 02/09/2023 07:45

No, only if I want to watch something. I like a quiet home, rarely have the radio on and only very, very occasionally listen to music (probably just carols when I am writing my Christmas cards).

hopeishere · 02/09/2023 07:50

DH loves the tv on it's a reflex for him to put it on when he goes into a room. We do turn it off for guests!!

I cannot stand background music in peoples homes. I seem to struggle to hear people speaking. I was at a friends for dinner try and her husband (who wasn't eating with us) put music on really loudly, she turns it down and later he came back on and turned it up again!!

BitOutOfPractice · 02/09/2023 07:52

I’m a radio person. 24/7 I’m listening to music, drama, documentary, sport. TV goes on when we want to watch something in the evening. I think keeping it on when you’ve got guests is rude.

astarsheis · 02/09/2023 07:57

We don't have the TV on during the day unless we're watching sport.
Otherwise the radio is on varying from Radio 1, 2 and 5 depending on what I want to listen to

EquallyDetermined · 02/09/2023 07:57

Ours rarely goes on during the day, only if we want to watch something specific eg sport at the weekend. There is usually someone watching it in the evening. If I'm at home alone during the day I tend to have nothing on, no radio, no music if I'm on the move doing stuff. I will put talk radio on as background noise if I'm WFH (this is occasional not regular) or doing home admin ie sitting at a computer. It all goes off if guests arrive unless they are staying for the evening and we decide to watch something. My parents have radio or TV on all the time and it does my head in.

CoolShoeshine · 02/09/2023 08:59

I too hate any sort of background noise and don’t like appliances being on for the sake of it. We just pop the tv on when we’re in the mood to watch something and turn it off again when finished. I don’t even like tv’s in pubs and bars- it’s very annoying when your talking to someone and their eyes keep wandering to the screen.
We’ve got family friends who keep the tv on in the living room the whole time we’re round and the conversation basically revolves around what’s on the tv.

Alycidon · 02/09/2023 09:02

No, it's on for specific programmes that we want to watch. I use the radio (music stations) if I want background noise.

Xrays · 02/09/2023 09:05

We have it on all the time, I can’t stand the silence without it. But then Ds and I have autism and I suspect it’s a sensory thing. I do switch it off for visitors though. I can quite happily ignore it if it’s on as background noise, I might be aware of what’s going on but I don’t get sucked into it, it’s a bit like having a radio on in the car when I’m driving etc.

Bananas1350 · 02/09/2023 09:07

All day? Are they watching it all day? I don’t watch tv really prefer reading or audiobooks. My husband will sit and watch some in the evening but not for hours. Do these people sit and watch it or just have it on in the background. Do they have it on in one room?

if I had mine on in the living room due to being in a bungalow I wouldn’t be able to see it or even hear it in the kitchen. Surely there are better things to do with ur day

Maraudingmarauders · 02/09/2023 09:08

Ours will be on if we are sat in the living room, sometimes with stuff we are watching but otherwise some kind of daytime TV whilst we have a cup of tea etc. DH likes to watch youtu e videos on it when he is chilling out. But we'd always switch off for visitors (apart from a couple of close who will sit and watch nonsense with us whilst we chat) and we never have it on whilst we are doing stuff around the house.
DH has started putting on a podcast whilst doing DIY, sometimes ill have an audio book on whilst cooking etc, but generally we don't have any background noise which means I can hear if DDog is up to something she shouldn't be

Ratfinkstinkypink · 02/09/2023 09:08

TV doesn't go on until late afternoon/early evening but the radio is on all day and that goes off if visitors come. The TV goes on sometimes for up to an hour while my 3 year old is in his standing frame as he likes the sound of Mr Tumble singing nursery rhymes.

TerrorOwls · 02/09/2023 09:19

Our tv is barely on during the day. I like music on though. I switch it off if we have guests.

VisionsOfSplendour · 02/09/2023 09:26

I hate TV on unless someone is actually watching something specific and would never have it on if anyone was visiting

I think that might be a minority view though as lots of people seem to have it on all the time. I'm more of a radio person

Like reading or audiobooks…..? 😆

I don’t know why people are so judgey about watching Tv. Or having it on. Everyone likes different things.
