Outlander season 1 - does it get better?

Everyone raves on about this so I’ve given it a go. I’m on season 1 but god it’s slow isn’t it? Does it get any better?

Does she eventually get to go back to her own time period and if so, when? I feel like I’m just trudging through the episodes waiting for her to get back to the 1940s!

I always thought she was soo annoying, I mean she literally knew EVERYTHING about EVERYTHING!

Yes, the more I watch it, the more smug and annoying the character of Claire becomes. And I find the actress so wooden. I know she is meant to be calm and competent in a crisis but she reacts to every situation in the same way with hardly any light or shade.

So she does go to other time periods? That’s reassuring because I was starting to worry that the whole thing was going to be set in the 1700s. If that was the case it might as well just be a drama set in the time!

The author was trying to write a historical drama, but she couldn’t write Claire to behave like someone from that time period so made her from the 1940s instead.

So yeah, if you’re not liking the first series, you’re not likely to like it tbh.

OP you might like Travelers on Netflix. Very timetravelly and not too much romance 🙂

If you keep going you get to see Tobias Menzies's winky (but not in good circumstances)
And Jamie- swoon

I’m disappointed as I thought it was about time travel (more so rather than just about one time period) Can anyone recommend a good time travel series?

A Discovery of Witches is bloody good. There is some time travel but it's not the main focus, but also scenes from assorted time periods. Not as slow-paced.

Tedious load of old nonsense and I didn't even finish season 1

Netcam · 21/05/2024 22:12

I absolutely loved it, all the seasons.

I'd also like suggestions for more time travel.

I think there's a new Quantum Leap but the reviews are terrible. Dark has time travel but I only watched part of the first season. Though it does have good reviews.

It's not about time travel but about the wider concept of time. I won't say more as it will be a spoiler but if time generally is of interest you may like Coherence.

Regarding time travel, Bodies on Netflix (not the one with Max Beesley, a current series!) is so good. It's really mind-bending & cerebral & the time-travelling element is central. I loved it.

I hate time travel stuff. I love Outlander, especially the first and early series. And Jamie 😍

DaisyGradie · 22/10/2024 15:56

Just started outlander. Jamie is gorgeous but I can’t get it out my head how much he would’ve stunk back then and not had his teeth brushed, no toilet roll! 🤢

I’ll admit it is very very slow. Do Claire’s voice over monologues continue?

tpmumtobe · 22/10/2024 17:22

I love Outlander and have read all the books but Series 1 is by far the best of it, if you're not enjoying it by now, give up.

And as @slobro suggested the St Mary's Chronicles are crying out to be adapted for TV, they bounce all over history, strong female lead, can highly recommend them.
