Outlander season 1 - does it get better?

ScoobyDon · 18/08/2023 07:06

Everyone raves on about this so I’ve given it a go. I’m on season 1 but god it’s slow isn’t it? Does it get any better?

Does she eventually get to go back to her own time period and if so, when? I feel like I’m just trudging through the episodes waiting for her to get back to the 1940s!

It's mostly 1700s with a small stint in 1940s.

I found it too traumatic with the constant rape. Sorry to spoil I won't go into details but gosh I was exhausted with the stress of it

Exactly why I gave up on it. Although Outlander tours seem to be popular so good for the Scottish economy I suppose. They filmed a battle scene not far from me. Roads were shut for a couple of days. As I gave up halfway through series one, I have absolutely no idea which one...🤣

I’m disappointed as I thought it was about time travel (more so rather than just about one time period) Can anyone recommend a good time travel series?

I'm more than halfway through series two. I know it's ridiculous but feel compelled to continue watching it.

I can't think of any where they regularly jump from one time period to another on an episodic basis besides Doctor Who, bit of an untapped market I would say!

aqiarious · 20/08/2023 12:54

I'm on the discussion thread (as are probably some people here) for the current season; just finished, and the second part is not back until next year. I think the early seasons are better, so not sure if you're struggling now, but the latest season has been likened to the early seasons in a positive way.

In quality it varies, and I think it's mostly lightweight, but it does have its moments and I've been enjoying the latest series. I didn't care for the torture scenes at the beginning and thought they were too graphic and went on for too long, but there hasn't been anything much like that since.

aqiarious · 20/08/2023 12:59

I'd also like suggestions for more time travel.

I think there's a new Quantum Leap but the reviews are terrible. Dark has time travel but I only watched part of the first season. Though it does have good reviews.

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 20/08/2023 13:02

The repeated rapes and sexual assaults were too much. I mean I’m no prude but really whoever wrote this (I assume it’s the same in the books) has some sort of non consent fetish going on! It’s the repetition as well regardless of the subject matter, Claire gets raped/assaulted, Jamie returns and realises what’s happened, goes mad, Claire calms him down. Sometimes it’s other people not Claire. Now in season 4 I see Brianna is old enough to be fair game so now there’s two main female characters who at least can take it in turn I guess.

Tiddlywinkly · 20/08/2023 13:04

The first season was good. I gave up last season. I couldn't be bothered. It was sooo slow and it wasn't worth the extra subscription.

Tbf the male characters have not been exempt!

The first series is the best I am afr..

I watch it when I need something slow and relaxing and brainless. It goes off in the mid seasons and has picked up a bit lately I think.

The books are considerably crapper.

But anyways I think you’re going to have to move on.

I can only think of time travel films. So I googled and this article came up. Not sure what channels you have access to but maybe there are some you could watch and / or others could say if they are worthwhile.

Just remember I recently watched the last few series of Lost which I watched at the time it was made, but the final series went to a streaming channel.

But I had an offer on Disney+ for a few months and all series are available there.

I never understood it, and it was somewhat implausible, but thought by the end I had understood. I then read reviews of the ending and they all talked about something that had never occured to me.

I suspect it is so convoluted you could make it be about what you want!

Timeless is pretty good and a lot lighter than outlander. 'Mild peril' at worst - I watch it with 10yo DD. Every episode is a diff time period in American history and it's given us lots to discuss and look up. It used to be on Netflix for ages but I don't think it's on there now. Must be somewhere. I was disappointed it got cancelled after 3 series.

I absolutely LOVE Outlander and was gutted they finished the mid season with Claire, Jamie and Ian just having arrived back in Scotland.

I have now started rewatching again from the beginning and am almost through season 1, (Dear God, watching Sam Heughan should carry a government health warning ❤️❤️❤️). Some of my favourite bits to date is Claire going to the print shop after all those years apart and when Brianne meets Jamie for the first time.

Surprisingly enough I couldn’t get into the books at all! Gave up halfway through book 1 which is disappointing but at least I have no idea what will happen in the future. Would love for Jamie to go through the stones to 1980 and can’t wait to see Jennie’s reaction when Ian turns up as a Mohawk just for starters. (No spoilers from you book worms please 😄.)

It is about time-travel. Claire isn’t the only one. She comes across others. We ,earn later how the time-travelling is done. She does return to her own time and remains there for quite some time before returning. In the current season (7), there’s a lot of to-ing and fro-ing through time, changing time, whether events in time are fixed extra… It’s a cheesy show, and the acting isn’t great. I also can’t stand the opening credits. But it passes the time.

I always thought she was soo annoying, I mean she literally knew EVERYTHING about EVERYTHING!

I loved it all. But that's me.

I think some stuff on the tv show is glossed over from memory. It has been a long time since I read the books but Claires's parents die and she is shipped off to her uncle who wants to stick her in boarding school but instead takes her to work with him. He travels to the middle east? and is definitely an archaeologist so she is used to camping on sites which is essentially mid 18th century life; cooking on open fires, foraging for food and digging latrines. Her work as an army nurse during WWII means they ran out of medicine so often resorted to herbal remedies and apothecary.

Frank her husband is a historian and clearly talks to her about his discoveries about his own family, ie Black Jack whom Claire meets immediately in the 18th century. I don't see what she shouldn't know but obviously does. After reading the books there were certain bits I did not watch when it came out as a tv series.

They need to adapt the St Mary's books as this is the exact premise!

Sulusu · 06/09/2023 17:36

Re time travel series, Travellers on Netflix is the only thing I can think of that is really good. It's a top quality show but its not got a lot of time travel itself in it. Premise is of humans from the future travelling back to stop something from happening, so most of it takes place in the present.

Johnisafckface · 06/09/2023 17:51

I watched season 1 which was ok, but i kept falling asleep during season 2. the two leads get on my nerves with their romance.
