Is anyone watching this on C4?

Not sure exactly what I make of it.

I'm sort of watching it but it's not grabbing me yet. Not very impressed with the woman who's acting all incompetent and stressing out. Can we have a capable female please?
Having said that, this survival lark would not be for me AT ALL!

LadyGeorginaSmythe · 06/08/2023 21:51

I'm enjoying it!
Gutted for the bloke who hurt himself with his axe within 4 hours though.
I'd be hopeless.

I was too.
Gosh it's so challenging.
I'd be hopeless Smile

I love shows like this. Ive watched every Alone ever made.

These British participants seem particularly inexperienced. On the American shows they have proper skilled survivalists and even they find it extremely challenging.

viques · 07/08/2023 00:35

I am rooting for the bears, and the wolves. And the moose if they get their act together and do some trampling.

How?! So you mean they get dinner?!

Liked people sparking flints to make fire but the woman was pathetic!

Ooh it was filmed in Saskatchewan.

I was engaged to a Canadian guy years ago and moved there for a short time.

He and his dad had tales of being chased by a bear on a fishing trip.

A cougar jumped through a big plate glass window into a neighbours house. They were out.

Where he lived in BC it was 2 ferry rides from Victoria.

Stunning but I’d never have loved it there! Yet alone in the wilderness!

Do they really just leave them to it? I always assume there must be some H&S back up in these shows - what if one of them was attacked by a bear, surely there must be people nearby to intervene?

LovingLalo · 07/08/2023 18:15

There is no way they are just left. They must have some crew watching incase of a wolf or bear attack.

I assume and hope so too.

I felt sorry for the poor squirrel that ended up being dinner.

But it is quite tense to watch the night time footage. I love the woods but I'd be a wreck out there. I'd probably last an hour at night.

purpleme12 · 07/08/2023 22:30

I watched a lot of the first episode then just gave up!
It was boring!
Because it's the interaction between people that makes these programmes interesting. But it was just boring watching one person alone all the time.

HundredMilesAnHour · 07/08/2023 22:48

I found it really dull and quickly lost interest.

I think I was expecting something more like a UK version of Outlast (on Netflix) which was absolutely gripping. Sadly not.

Recommend you watch Outlast instead (they're in teams so much more interaction) or Ultimate Survival Alaska (National Geographic 10 years ago - season 1 on Amazon Prime)

adriftabroad · 08/08/2023 19:41

The American ones are a completely different kettle of fish.
I was disappointed.

Yeah I heard the American ones are better, us English are wusses.

And yeah of course they’re not gonna leave them to be attacked/eaten by wolves or bears so they’re not that alone!

I think Channel 4 have deliberately chosen inexperienced participants as they think it’ll increase entertainment value. But in fact it means 90% of the programme is people saying ‘Oh my God what’s that noise?’ and swearing when their shelter falls down. What I don’t understand is why none of them seemed to have watched any of the numerous previous series and learnt from them! And what’s with the naked bathing? Don’t remember a single American doing that.

MaePedwarGolau · 09/08/2023 13:08

I'm three episodes into season 8 of the American version (I could only find 8 and 9 on Sky) and one of the male contestants was bathing naked and they blurred everything, even his arse. As he got out he made a joke that the water was so cold they wouldn't need to blur anything 😂

I agree, the UK version is very disappointing in comparison. The American contestants are all "I've been hunting/hiking/wild camping my entire life" vs the British woman who "gets lost in Tesco". The only one I thought had any potential managed to take himself out with an axe four hours in! I'll probably keep watching but I can't see any of them lasting very long.

SmoothSeasDoNotMakeGoodSailors · 09/08/2023 13:11

It's entertainment, not a survival show. I thought it was a shame the guy cut his leg as I thought he would be an interesting character. Apart from that, I think I will tire of it quickly.

ICanSeeMyHouseFromHere · 09/08/2023 13:28

The American series are way better.

There's an Aussie one too - which is about half-way in between I'd say.

Willyoubuymeahouseofgold · 09/08/2023 21:24

I've watched a lot of Seasons of the US version and I'm a fan.
I was wondering why they have chosen such inexperienced people as they are usually quite experienced in Alone. I guess it's for the relatability factor over here too.
Will stick with it and see

GeneJeanie · 13/08/2023 13:59

I've just started watching. I 'know' Laura from following and enjoying her YouTube channel.

I felt a bit of a response to axe man's self pity. He was grumbling something like, "Not even given a chance" when he'd actually just been given a chance.

notthebestideas · 14/08/2023 12:38

I do wonder what they were taught on their 9 day survival course in preparation for this experience. I imagine using an axe carefullly and starting a fire would be included but IRL things don't go to plan. I think the thickly forested location makes movement and hunting difficult but the real test is your mental resilience.

GeneJeanie · 14/08/2023 15:43

I'm really trying to stick with it, but bless them all, it's a boring programme. They're just not doing much are they? And about 70% of each episode is them being scared in the dark about noises outside.

I'm trying to think what would make it better. Perhaps food or equipment rewards when they manage to boil their first drinking water or survive three nights? Perhaps, as someone suggested, teams would be better viewing?

Bigbadmama · 14/08/2023 20:45

I enjoyed Scouser Louie eating the Squirrels eyballs....but yes it is dull.

LaBelleSauvage123 · 16/08/2023 17:46

Am I right in thinking only two episodes have been released so far?
