Sobbing. I don't have anyone to tell in real life but I just wanted to say how much it moved me.

OP posts:

I cried and cried when I watched it, and I can get choked up just thinking about it.

I loved it too but found it irritating that 'sorry forgot her name' Jill had no interests or passions of her own aside from supporting the men. Also irritating that ultimately everything was a woman's fault. The only female characters were extremely unpleasant or support humans.

But one of the women in the story was a real woman and this is what she actually did and she also appeared in the drama. Would you prefer to bend the truth? It doesn't mean there weren't plenty of women out there doing exciting stuff but that's not what this story is about. This is what Jill chose to do and she was a pioneer in her way.

I can't remember all the character names but the IOW mother was a bitch, the Welsh mother was very understanding and loving. Maybe you are seeing what you want to see.

This! Took me a while to notice but once you do it's a huge deficit. RTD writes sublimely - don't understand why he couldn't do this for the female characters in this series.

Because the series was about "the boys". IIRC was originally going to be called The Boys.
Presumably as the real Jill was in it she was happy with how he portrayed her.

Well he couldn’t lie and tell a false Jill story, he also had no control over channel 4 cutting the series short and cutting out all the later episodes that were about Jill.

No but he could have made the female characters more than 2 dimensional as he did for the males.

Fantastic series, I bawled my eyes out and it stayed with me for a long time afterwards

ssd · 01/08/2023 08:59

Ive never seen it, is it a true story?

Donesosavemyusernamesettings · 01/08/2023 09:00

Cried for hours when I watched it.

Spoiler....

Why Colin? 😥

Lamelie · 01/08/2023 09:02

It was wonderful. I think a bit like handmaids tale @ssd everything happened, not necessarily to in that order to particular people.
Agree about women in it but that’s what it was- inappropriate to shoehorn a different narrative about women into it.

What else would you have liked to have seen about the women in the programme about Hiv and aids crisis in the 80s

CrazyArmadilloLady · 01/08/2023 09:05

inappropriate to shoehorn a different narrative about women into it.

What….?

I’m sure some of the women who were alive during the AIDS crises and were friends with gay men did actually have relationships of their own, for example….

Pringleface · 01/08/2023 09:10

I loved It’s A Sin so much that I watched the whole thing again not long after watching it the first time. An outstanding piece of TV.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 01/08/2023 09:18

Another one still thinking about it 2 years later.

It starts the month I went to secondary school (in central London). I said to DM when IAS was first shown, how I felt like I'd had a very high seat in the upper, upper stalls of a very big theatre, watching the culture portrayed evolve. She said, completely deadpan "Ibiza, they were my friends". I later realised that a couple of family friends were gay men who died of AIDS. DM had sat with one of them as he died.

DameKatyDenisesClagnuts · 01/08/2023 09:22

I watched it about a year ago and feel the same- so moving. I still think about it a lot now

PlumPudd · 01/08/2023 09:55

Read The Line of Beauty by Allan Hollinghurst - similar vibes.

I also thought it would’ve been good to see Jill having a tiny bit of a life outside of looking after the boys, but given that it’s a story about a generation of men who were ostracised shamed feared and then erased and forgotten as they died horrible deaths, I think it’s fair enough to focus on them

otherwayup · 01/08/2023 10:05

It's my all time favourite tv show by many miles.
Just harrowing, beautiful, amazing in equal measures!

Have you seen the film Pride?
If not you must watch it!

Mrsjayy · 01/08/2023 10:07

I love Pride it's one of My favourite films everyone should see it at least once !

otherwayup · 01/08/2023 10:15

@Mrsjayy yes to this!
It's just beautiful isn't it?

I've watched it multiple times 😂

Ryvitas · 01/08/2023 10:17

Absolutely wonderful series, so heartbreaking what happened to these men. The scenes where Gloria's family burnt his belongings was very upsetting. Loved Colin too, what a wholesome and heartwarming young man.

It's just a joy of a film yes it's a serious subject and was through depressing time but it was just brilliant. We went through the miners strike I was a teenager so it obviously wasn't the best time so a lot of it resonated with me.

clarepetal · 01/08/2023 12:55

It's a Sin is one of the best programmes ever. Fact.

otherwayup · 01/08/2023 13:12

@Mrsjayy
God seeing it in the cinema must have been amazing/tough, I was an emotional wreck and glad not to be in public 😂
