Anyone watched it? Any good?

OP posts:

Yes, I’ve just watched it. It was very good and some of the old footage was really interesting, overlaid with the voices of George and Andrew. It was really well made. Also, why did I fancy George as a teen when Andrew was so classically handsome? George kind of grew into his looks but Andrew was very attractive.

The story highlighted how pivotal Andrew was to the solo success of George as it’s pretty clear that their friendship, and Andrew’s confidence and drive, played a huge part in GM’s career. Not to say that GM wasn’t talented because he was, massively so, but I really don’t think George would have done it on his own.

Been waiting for this.. Going to watch tomorrow. George Micheal was sodding gorgeous! Had my first snog at a disco while slow dancing to careless whisper 😂

usernother · 05/07/2023 22:37

Yes, it's really good. I was never a big wham fan until I went to the farewell concert which was great. I didn't know George and Andrew were such close friends although I knew they'd been to school together.

littleburn · 05/07/2023 23:22

Just watched it. Such a big part of my childhood - George was and always will be my first love!

It was lovely to hear them both telling their story and also for Andrew to get his credit for their success. Loved the insight that George's Wham persona was really shy, teenage him mimicking cool, popular. Andrew. Their friendship was so evident and very touching.

It also really struck me how incredibly generous and gracious Andrew was in stepping back and letting George take centre stage and grow into becoming a solo artist, even if it meant the end of the group. That must have been hard for him, but he didn't let ego or jealousy get in the way of their friendship. Oh and like a previous poster said, I didn't see it at the time, but he was sooooo bloody handsome too! Absolutely gorgeous.

Only downside for me was not hearing from Pepsi and Shirley. They've both been very positive about the program on social media so I think they'd have happily taken part.

I really enjoyed it, it made me wonder what Andrew is doing now and if they kept in touch after the split.

Yes they stayed very close.

Andrew is in a relationship with Keren Woodward, has been for a long time.

George was Roman Kemp's godfather

I actually read about Andrew and Keren the other day and they split up a few years ago.

We watched the documentary tonight, loved every minute of it and it was such an emotional watch. I remember the stick Andrew got while in Wham so it’s good to see him get the recognition he deserves. George is so very much missed, what a lovely man he was.

Andrew’s book is well worth a read if you haven’t already done so.

I was sure they had got back together after their split, but they didn't seem to. Not sure why i thought that

Got up at sunrise to watch it . It was absolutely brilliant. As a teen I was so in love with George but didnt reallly appreciate his later music to recently.
A friend recommend Andrew's book , Wham! George & Me , so I'm getting that on my summer holiday list.

PolaDeVeboise · 06/07/2023 10:30

It really made me see Andrew in a different light - was really upset he seemed to be 'cashing in' following George's death. He seems like a thoroughly decent, loyal man.

narrowmindedbigot · 06/07/2023 10:50

"who is Wham?" Never felt so old😂

569104160N · 06/07/2023 12:08

Watching it now.. Brilliant! George Micheal is just gorgeous.

I8toys · 06/07/2023 19:33

Absolutely loving in and George/Andrew's relationship. Even DH admits George was amazing and he hates pop music! George's hair was amazing. So fluffy!

Shimmyshimmycocobop · 07/07/2023 12:58

I really enjoyed this, didn't expect to find it so moving though 😭
My friend and I loved them when we were 15, we spent our lunch money one day on Smash Hits as it had a poster of them in the middle. By the time I was 17 I thought they were a bit naff being all sophisticated and alternative, but I always retained a soft spot for them.

I watched a documentary a few years back on GM and he visited Andrew at his then home in Cornwall and said he thought Andrew had had a much happier life than he did by getting out of the spotlight early on.

Always loved Andrew and even more so now seeing how gracious he was at the end of Wham.

Violetparis · 07/07/2023 13:05

Loved it, both George and Andrew came across as lovely, loyal, intelligent people.

beguilingeyes · 07/07/2023 13:19

I was a little bit older so Wham! largely passed me by..and then I went to the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert. Instant convert. What a talent he was. Such control in his voice.
I really liked the Carpool Karaoke he did with James Corden for Comic Relief. Such a sweet man. What a loss.

Antoninus · 07/07/2023 13:23

Loved them so much, queued for 3 hours to meet Andrew at a book signing a few years back !!!

PollyAmour · 07/07/2023 13:25

Brilliant documentary. Did George ever get round to telling his dad he was gay, after Andrew and Shirley persuaded him not to?

It's a beautiful portrayal of a childhood friendship that lasted well into adulthood.

In his book, Andrew says that he and Yog were still in regular contact and used to play scrabble together - rock and roll!

I also didn't realise how much input Andrew had into Careless Whisper, I thought it was all George's work, but Andrew wrote the melody.

RIP George.

tothesea · 07/07/2023 13:55

I thought this was really well done. I was glued to it. I loved all the old pics and videos of them. It very much summed up my youth in the 80’s.. I am so nostalgic for that time.
It felt very poignant that George said at the end he lost his support when they split. It seemed once he was on his own the fun and light heartedness went out of it. I mean he always retained a sense of humour but not having a laugh with your best mate, taking the piss In interviews etc.
He grew up I suppose, like we all had to. RIP George we miss you.

Antoninus · 07/07/2023 13:57

Loved Andrew’s mum’s scrap books

CoolShoeshine · 07/07/2023 14:17

The show didn’t really tell us much that we didn’t know but it was wonderful to revisit the story and the clips from their formation up to their break up.
I agree with everyone that Andrew was a wonderful personality and it is touching how he was drawn to George’s friendship as George was a much quieter character when young. I should imagine that handsome and fun Andrew was one of the most popular lads in school, and he was dating Shirley who was at school with them too.
Pretty sure that George acknowledged in his early biography that he would never have had a music career without Andrew by his side in the early days because he just didn’t have the confidence alone. Believe he gave Andrew joint writing credit on Wham songs even though Andrew had little input into them which kept Andrew extremely financially comfortable after the split.
Live how there was no malice from Andrew that George went on to bigger things without him, that’s a true friendship and beautiful soul.
I seem to remember that George had a very small funeral with his closest family plus Andrew, Shirley and their families and not many other people. It’s like he was still the same shy boy privately.

Yes, she was certainly dedicated!

I wonder how hard Andrew found adapting to ‘normal’ life after 4 incredible years of worldwide adulation and fame, after that final concert I wonder how he adapted to the huge change in his life, waking up the next morning must have been very strange.
