Late to this… persevered through it but god, it’s awful. Miranda is sooo annoying. All the woke stuff is just so trite.

I am kind of interested in Carrie’s storyline so will watch to the end but I’m not sure why!

know I've said it before, but AJLT needs the narration and the theme to pull all the characters together.

It could have made a difference. I didn't know it was missing until it had been pointed out.

I was always bothered about Charlotte not having family (aside from a very brief sighting of a brother). She'd strike me as the kind of woman to have overly involved posh parents, constantly pushing her to get married.

A bearded gentleman did walk her up the aisle at her wedding to Trey. This bothered me, because he must have been standing there listening to Charlotte - who was late. walking. up the aisle - tell Carrie that Trey couldn't get it up.

No family at all at the wedding to Harry, only Harry's cousin, the Jackrabbit. You'd have thought there might be some conflict about her converting.

Miranda was the only one who seemed to have a concrete family set up, but even they weren't invited to her wedding. I'd love to know what happened to Carrie and Samantha's mothers and what they were like.

My friends own a Brooklyn brownstone. It’s got five bedrooms.

iamthattree · 09/07/2023 21:41

I thought Miranda did have her sister at her wedding? There were a couple of heads there (rewatched it the other day).

Agree re Charlottes family - she's clearly from money with a good education. I would suggest that her job is one typically pursued by those from a posh background.

I am trying to remember which is sitcom deliberately excluded family/parents. Was it satc? The only parents seen at all are Steve's mum and bigs mum for one episode at a distance and you only get one episode of Charlotte's brother and Miranda's sister....

iamthattree · 09/07/2023 21:57

Ok judge me all you like (I am judging me hard too) but apparently I was right and the omission of parents/backgrounds is deliberate.

However, the wedding announcement of Charlotte and Harry does have some background

www.cheatsheet.com/entertainment/sex-and-the-city-how-much-do-you-know-about-charlotte-yorks-family.html

I am a tragic tragic person

Ridemeginger · 10/07/2023 07:57

I'm not judging you! How clever, it never occurred to me to try to read the wedding announcement! That's good knowledge on Charlotte, although I wonder whether the mistake about her professional background was deliberate or sloppy. It's also confirmed Carrie's dad left her when she was young, so curious that The Carrie Diaries series has her living with her widowed dad as a teen. I will have to have a closer look next time I see Miranda's wedding episode to. spot her sister.

I don't think the lack of mothers is not deliberate. Mothers (other characters' mothers, that is) didn't come off great in SATC. Only Miranda's got a look in, at her own funeral. Perhaps it would have been too loaded and serious to give the main characters too much of an influential parental figure.

workshy46 · 10/07/2023 11:59

I liked that episode but I now fast forward the Che/Miranda scenes. The one thing I can't get over is how bad the acting is. I watched an old episode last night and a bit of the first film and Charlotte was actually quite good then- to say she is wooden now would be the understatement of the century. What happened ??Even Miranda is hopeless- Carrie seems to be the only one from the original series who remembers how to actually act

OMG I've only just noticed that myself! But now I have, I definitely think AJLT would be better if it had it.

Have to admit I actually like Che, personally ducks for cover

'Have to admit I actually like Che, personally ducks for cover'

I'm honestly fascinated. I think that's the first time I've ever read a positive opinion about this character. Please tell us why - genuinely interested

iamthattree · 10/07/2023 13:42

I don't hate Che either. I hate Miranda and I think Che is very one dimensional and not well written but I think they are unapologetic about what they are and they know that is a bit self centred and arrogant.

It's Miranda that grinds my gears as she's so very pathetic. Che had more principles re Miranda cheating on Steve than Miranda did. Che was quite open about wanting a non traditional type of relationship. Not their fault that Miranda is a twat.

BriarHare · 10/07/2023 21:13

I’m so intrigued as to why the actor playing Charlotte is so bloody awful now. She really did used to be able to act.

I loathe Che so much, I have to skip through all of her scenes. Would Miranda really end up so utterly pathetic? It goes against everything she used to be.

Difficult to pinpoint really, I just find them an engaging character and I quite like the direction the storyline has taken Miranda in, personally. The character's life (Miranda's, I mean) seemed to have got very stale and I think it's quite refreshing to have a storyline that covers such a big change of sexuality in midlife. I like the chemistry she and Che have as well.

I haven't seen all of series 2 of AJLT yet, so that's just based on my viewing of the first series and the first 2 episodes of the second.

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/07/2023 09:37

@orangeyeahthatsright you must be the only person who likes che

Tho guess it's not her fault or should I say their fault - that Miranda sis so soppy with her and totally out of character

ReeseWitherfork · 11/07/2023 11:49

Che was indeed very one dimensional in S1, and dare I say a nauseating caricature. I think I’ve said before on this thread that Che looks even worse in stark contrast to Kai in Greys (who was introduced around the same time). Che was written so badly; the writers took the cliche route of including a NB character for the sake of it, and made their entire personality “being NB”. Whereas with Kai, it was barely mentioned. The NB thing didn’t even come up outside of a quick pronoun clarification.

But I think they’ve made some headway in padding out the character so far in S2. Che actually seems to have (the hint of) hopes and dreams and fears and pressures. I’m not sure if the writers were being clever or completely unaware of what they’ve done, but I do find it interesting that Che has decided to disassociate themselves with the word “woman” and everything that means, but is still being held up to the same beauty standards that women face. Certainly humanises them.

I don’t like what they’ve done to Miranda. I don’t like that they’ve done to Miranda and Steve’s marriage. I always enjoyed the fact Miranda wasn’t a girly-girl who regularly put two fingers up to gender stereotypes, and did it all while being straight. Not a common trope on television, especially back then.

So I think my beef is more with Miranda at this point than Che. Although I’m still not sold on Che either.

While I’m at it though, I haven’t actually warmed to Seema. Not worked her out yet.

WeetabixTowels · 11/07/2023 12:33

I’m almost at the point of stopping watching because of the disgusting messes that are Miranda and Che.

This is the second episode where they’ve had sex in front of friends nearby. Grim. Then the husband groping Che without consent - WTF has this show come to?! Miranda 1.0 would have been out there like a flash with some speech about sexual assault. But I felt like she was basically tricked into a threesome.

Che makes me feel a bit sick actually - they’re so gross and inappropriate. IRL Che would have no friends for being such an obnoxious narcissist. Are they supposed to be coming across that way?

Love love loving Seema. She’s no Samantha but she’s pretty close.

Lentilweaver · 06/07/2023 16:09

I mean, Charlotte hasn't had a job since when? Since Lily arrived, so at least 16 years? She should be immensely grateful to be offered anything, but instead we are supposed to believe that her highest ambition is to be jizzed on by Harry. The amount of fuss made over his stupid sperm.

I know SATC is not supposed to be all intellectual, but really, a little bit of ambition on the part of the women could not hurt. None of them do ANYTHING now., except chase their extremely ugly love interests.

I didn't know Lyle was Goldie Hawn's son. Definitely takes after Kurt Russell. I think he and Carrie might hook up?

Charlotte hasn’t had a job since she was engaged to Trey! Well before she met Harry.

Then she didn’t need one as she took the flash million dollar park avenue apartment from the man she was married to for 5 minutes

WeetabixTowels · 11/07/2023 14:37

GellerYeller · 09/07/2023 16:38

@WhyDoesItAlways are the Yorke-Goldenblatts still in the apartment that Charlotte/Harry fought Trey and Bunny in her divorce? Did the nanny live in? It must have space in that case?

Yes!

The bedroom situation bothers me too.

Reminds me of Gilmore Girls when people would stay on the sofa in Lorelai’s house - we’re meant to believe that that massive house only had 1 bedroom upstairs (because Rory’s room was off the kitchen)

Yes! I did laugh when on her wedding to Trey, Charlotte has a really sexually explicit conversation with Carrie about ED right before she’s about to walk down the aisle. Then when Carrie starts to walk, some bloke presumably her dad, swoops in and takes her arm. What kind of dad just stands to the side until you’ve finished chatting to your mate?!

Charlotte didn't take the apartment from Trey, he offered it to her when they split. It was his Mum Bunny who wanted to fight it out in court. And the argument ended with Trey's telegram ("Seriously Mother, STOP".)

I'm not saying Charlotte deserved the apartment, I always thought it a little odd that Trey gave it so willingly and can only assume he did it out of guilt that he couldn't be the husband she wanted. But even so, she wasn't so cutthroat as to take something that he hadn't offered up front.

I know, I was being a bit facetious because it walkways bothered me a little that she got the apartment. She knew Trey for 2 minutes, basically forced a proposal (‘alrighty’ 🤣) snogged the gardener and then they didn’t last much longer after that, I don’t agree with her when she says she earned the apartment.

Although having said that, Trey was bloody odd. And should not have married her if he didn’t want children. He was deceptively un-WASPy when Charlotte was looking for a WASP type - but then her and Harry are my favourite match by far so I’m pleased she didn’t end up with a WASP.

tribpot · 11/07/2023 18:07

I think both Trey and Charlotte married the 'type' they were conditioned to marry .. and both found it wasn't what they were looking for. Would be good to get a Trey update at some point, did he marry someone wildly unsuitable but who made him happy? Although he was an utter dick, I kind of hope so.

I know you lot will appreciate this - a woman on Instagram who does amazing Steve impressions.

I always pegged him as gay, and yes would be interesting to go there to see what happened to him.

Theres a great scene after they split up and have a quickie in her apartment where he says it’s not her, he didn’t wanna marry anyone but he felt people were expecting him too. And Charlotte said the same (she’d been obsessed with getting married for 3 seasons). It was very raw and well acted.
