Annika, thriller with Nicola Walker. 9.15pm BBC1. Previously on a different channel I think. Series 2 coming later in the year.

@DuncinToffee I meant do a bbc new drama thread on it

I know I did one when was on alibi 😂😂

Ah I get you, as I said it was all very confusing reading a thread that said no spoilers going into episode 2 Grin

First time watching this. I love her.
But the accent coming and going REALLY annoys me...

Jellykat · 21/05/2023 21:20

I watched it last night also because i've loved everything shes been in thus far.. enjoyed it, but found the talking to camera irritating and too 'Fleabag'

I've just watched episode one and the accent thing was so odd!!!!

Can anyone explain why we were shown that horrific photo of the swollen and lacerated face in amongst the photos of the Sutherland's?? Who was that?? Why?

Or what you wouldn't wear a wedding ring just because you fish for mackerel? My dad worked at sea and wore his.

Anyway, an easy watch, and nice to see NW being a bit less serious, so will keep watching.

kateislate · 22/05/2023 22:20

Watched episode 1 and found it quite slow although enjoyed the subtle, sarcy digs from Sives. Episode 2 much better and even quite enjoying Nicola's fleabag schtick now.

I think the lacerated face was the daughter who died on the tour boat.

I think the wedding ring was to do with getting it caught in net/winch/other machinery.

I just caught up with this and it was good, but they seem to have deliberately removed all the things i really loved about the radio version:

  • Norwegian setting (which was fab for learning random facts about the country)
  • Small son who was (realistically) looked after by Annika’s mum whilst she was working, so there was little “angst” in her home life
  • what felt like a very Scandinavian attitude to her single parent choice, with no detriment to her career

this one just felt like they had a bag of tv-cop-cliches they felt they had to sprinkle over the top of it.

SlipSlidinAway · 28/05/2023 09:25

Boring. Gave up after 20 mins.

Willmafrockfit · 28/05/2023 09:26

agree,
it is too quick

excelledyourself · 28/05/2023 19:00

Thanks @SoupDragon I watched again and think you're right. I thought one of the images had dark hair, and one blonde, but I imagined that!

I'm on episode 5, but I'm finding it quite... contrived?

Also finding everyone a bit shallow. There seems to be no real emotions, and the police team seem quite blasé about everything, even when speaking with the victims families.

The comparison to a daytime show is probably right. Like Murder She Wrote or something.

I think it's just quite a downgrade for NW.

mummywithtwokidsplusdog · 01/06/2023 08:37

Really enjoyed it… quite like each episode being a different case. Nice to see Glasgow and Clyde area too :)

I preferred the radio version too.

foxlover47 · 01/06/2023 16:37

I loved the radio version and watched this on Alibi
Still I will look forward to series 2

DaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisy · 01/06/2023 16:44

Had to give up by middle of ep 2. I just can't cope with Nicola Walker's Walkerisms anymore Confused

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 02/06/2023 22:33

What are the Walkerisms? I don’t know her enough from other things to spot what isn’t part of the characterisation

DaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisy · 03/06/2023 08:34

The stutteriness/hesitation of her delivery.

Willmafrockfit · 03/06/2023 13:01

i guess she might have a stutter?

DaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisyDaisy · 03/06/2023 16:38

She doesn't.

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 09/06/2023 21:53

We watched the first episode last night but after reading a few posts on this thread I might try and listen to the radio version. Does anyone know if it's on BBC Sounds?

IwantToRetire · 11/06/2023 18:49

Its looks like all series of Anika as broadcast on Radio 4 are available on iPlayer.

Which is quite unusual, as they often drop earlier series once a newer on is released.

Maybe they were anticipating getting listeners turned off by the tv version.

Confusing web display as they have made series 1 that end of the listing https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b049fg98/episodes/player?page=4

This is the listing with the lastest / last episode displayed https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b049fg98/episodes/player?page=1

Willmafrockfit · 12/06/2023 11:17

thank you @IwantToRetire

LadyEloise1 · 12/06/2023 14:55

Nicola Walker and Walkerisms. Love it.
But not the mannerisms.
Watching this and thinking why is the lawyer from The Split now a policewoman in Glasgow ?

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/06/2023 22:49

Well @LadyEloise1 you should be used to her in police - unforgotten

viques · 14/06/2023 14:45

Well, sounds as though I am in a minority, but I have really enjoyed this series.
