I’ve been avoiding the C* today so got drawn into this programme. I’m not one for reality TV, usually. Before I waste more time on it, can someone tell me if this is real or 100% scripted? I realise some of it is scripted and rehearsed, but is it all? Thanks.

Belmondo - why did you/your boss need the prayer time? Also, better he was bending the rules than being super-strict :)

He was dreadful.
What was that absolute eejit bringing to the party?

@CliffsofMohair Well at least he sort of found one person he hit it off with but Jesus (haha) he didn’t even have the good grace to be thankful for it. Poster boy for spoiled men that one.

@LadyWithLapdog I know right 😂

Ah that's a shame - Shtisel is SO good!!

I used to work with the husband of the author of The Marrying of Chani Kaufman. Sadly I didn't much like the book 😳

I also used to work for an orthodox Jewish guy and let me tell you, we jumped through some blinking hoops to keep kosher and observe all the high holy days and Shabbat regulations...except when he fancied doing whatever he wanted on the quiet 🙄 I was very fond of him though! At one time I could find the prayer times of any North London synagogue within about three seconds flat, a skill I sadly underuse nowadays.

I read the Chani Kaufman book years ago!! 😆 re jumping through hoops etc - many religious people do things ‘on the quiet’, but not all. Religion is a funny old thing as most people pick and choose what they do/don’t want to observe.

@JustDanceAddict Oh no, I got sidetracked into the 3 series of Indian MM and didn’t get round to watching Shtisel. I remember reading a book about 15 years ago by a London rabbi daughter which was fascinating, but I’ve totally forgotten it. To the extent I don’t remember if it was fact or fiction or, indeed, what it was about 😀

Was it "Disobedience" by Naomi Alderman, that's a good one!

@Pennina thank you for the book recommendations. I’ve just bought the first one but I can’t find the Innocents, only a DVD.

It's by Francesca Segal - on Amazon

Also "Disobedience" by Naomi Alderman is good too, also set in NW London orthodox community.

LadyWithLapdog · 08/06/2023 10:16

@Pennina thanks for those book suggestions.

PS it was Disobedience if read before.

Reviving this thread. @Pennina I’ve got round to reading Chani Kaufman book. I’m halfway through and I really like it. It brings together so much of the things in the Jewish MM series. Things haven’t changed all that much, have they?

@Belmondo you said you didn’t like the book. Did you find it too irreverent? I’m halfway through and I like it. I’m a complete novice, though, so what I find interesting might be boring and self-obvious to you? It’s strange to think such a different world to mine just 15 miles or so across London.

I must re-read it, it's years since I read it. Glad you're enjoying it. My own community is not quite so orthodox but I know people who are from that sort of world. Oh no, I too missed Shtisel, never seem to get time to watch tv.

Watched this over the weekend. Felt a bit like a waste of time, considering the overall result - Love Island has a better success rate for matches!

Very fed up with beautiful, articulate women on dating shows being paired with red flag chancers.

I would have given up but the Jewish angle made it a compelling watch.
