Anyone watching The Big Interiors Battle on Channel 4 ?

OP posts:

Despite the half tables shelving thing being done a lot, I think that the bar looked great and it fit the retro element asked for. Jamie for the win this week.
It looked as though Justine was the one behind the tables issue to me. I don't enjoy those bright colours she is so fond of, although they are usually done very well. This week, those cushions on the seats looked ill fitting and bloody awful, plus the bench at the wrong height, makes me think she was the right choice for elimination.
Patrycja will be next, I think, unless she can call upon some confidence and firm decision making. I love some of her ideas and loathe others.
John does great work but I wouldn't have him design for me because he does his own thing so consistently.
Tara seems to be the most versatile designer and I am looking forward to seeing what comes next from her. I suspect she might win overall.

Fleabea · 16/05/2023 12:38

I'm not sure I can forgive Pat for those weird blob things. What the heck were they!? Surely she must be next to go.

I have a suspicion that Justine painted the table the wrong colour on purpose due to Pat's whinging. I would have done the same.

Justine's bio says Justine is a determined character, who completed her one-year interior design course in just two months

Assume it was an online course then.
A two month course does not an interior designer make. All you'd get is a colour wheel and how to make a mood board.

To me it's one of those fields where you've either got it or you don't and you need the actual physical experience of the job rather than the theory.

In Justines case she must have only seen three colours on the colour wheel as that is all she does

She appears to have her own design company.

I’ve just watched it.

It was a silly episode which was going to make it very hard for anyone to achieve. The space wasn’t a good space to start with. And all the contestants had gone there to design rooms in a flat, not this kind of space. They all looked poor except the bar.

WingingItSince1973 · 19/05/2023 19:59

Four designers left! Let's hope they do something amazing tonight x

martinisforeveryone · 19/05/2023 20:19

At the moment I'm worried about Jamie's time management. Wielding that little paint brush over the bare brick isn't a great use of his time or his skills.

Yes that's a huge job when you don't have much time to do it. John has yet another fireplace 😂

CaptainMyCaptain · 19/05/2023 20:32

Patricia is dithering and can't make her mind up about anything. Total chaos

martinisforeveryone · 19/05/2023 20:49

Have we got any predictions? I think Patrycja really has to go. That dining platform is a travesty.

Cathotels · 19/05/2023 20:53

I hate, hate , hate John’s country house style but surely Patrycja has to go this week

CaptainMyCaptain · 19/05/2023 20:54

I like John's rooms although I think they are wrong for the building. His is the flat I would choose to live in.

CaptainMyCaptain · 19/05/2023 20:54

Right choice to go.

martinisforeveryone · 19/05/2023 21:01

I don't hate John's style so much and it is his taste for what he hopes will be his home, so he is true to himself. It isn't my taste but I think it looks well done, just isn't really appropriate for the space.

I didn't agree so much with Dara's criticism of Tara's efforts. It had to be personal and Tara has a lot of people to fit in, comparatively and the room has to have potential for WFH as well. That's not at all uncommon. That's the relatively of modern city living, people don't have the luxury of empty floor spaces. I didn't like the idea of zoning the ceiling though, not with the pipework already exposed.

For me though, the worst thing about all these flats is that the brickwork hasn't been cleaned up more. It looks such a mess. Some of the pointing is black, some's natural, it's all very patchy. I don't like it.

Furbylicious · 20/05/2023 10:41

I want Tara to win, I think it will be Jaimie, I'm worried it might be John 😂

I'm glad Patrrycja went, I think it was overdue really. She kept getting the same criticism. I actually liked her blue and yellow colour scheme but - as Dara said- it didn't tie in with the kitchen end at all and the chip board doodle wall looked really cheap and last minute. I am not sure what Dara is seeing when she said she's the most innovative designer in the competition. I have seen some of her ideas before but don't if them she's out a bit of a twist on... Like all of them really.

I thought John's room was actually better than his previous ones, the larger space could take it and it did tie in with the kitchen. I found it odd that Dara said she wasn't going to judge on her personal taste in week one but then this week he was told to make it less of a pastiche - which seems like personal taste to me?

I like that they seem to have sufficient budget and time compared to the BBC/Alan Carr version but I think the judging of a design of what someone wants in their own home makes it hard.

I actually agree that Tara's room didn't have enough floor space/circulation as an ideal but if I needed to put a working space in my living room, I might make that compromise.

They're back to a group challenge next week🙄
Does that mean they've done all the rooms in the flat or is there a spare room left? Where will Tara's children sleep?!

Despite my grumbling, I'm actually enjoying it but I think a bit of tweaking for the brief would help

Furbylicious · 20/05/2023 10:42

Oh autocorrect...

*Some of Dara's ideas she's put a bit of a twist on. Like all the designers really

Furbylicious · 20/05/2023 10:43

Not Dara, some of Patrycja's ideas. I give up!

MedievalMadness · 21/05/2023 10:22

The right person went definitely. I also want Tara to win as she seems to do the most designing rather than painting and what looks like bringing a Pinterest save to fruition, the rest seem to do. I’m really enjoying the programme . I like that it’s not silly. I don’t enjoy the team challenges but suppose if any of the contestants were to do some interior design work, they’d have to be able to collaborate. They never end well though do they. I thought Johns living room was the one I’d enjoy living in the most but fake fire surrounds seems a waste of wall space to me. In this case x2.

SoupDragon · 21/05/2023 10:39

Patrycja was definitely the right one to go, although I think that she was hampered by her youth and inexperience. Give her time and I think she'd be great. I think her dining platform would have been really good if she'd stuck with the idea of the vertical poles forming a "wall"

Jamie and Tara are my picks for the win and I'd be happy with either of them winning. I'm not a fan of Jamie's all white finish but, equally, I thought Tara's was too busy and cramped.

I really like John's rooms but they are totally wrong from the building so he is at a disadvantage there. I have two fireplaces in the same style as his and I am desperate to rip them out in favour of something plainer thought!

Next week's group task looks better as it's one design and one designer in charge. These three look more capable of working together.

Giggorata · 21/05/2023 11:03

I think it was right that Patrycja left this week. I hated quite a lot of what she did, particularly that scrappy looking doodle arch, and agree that the colours were not harmonious with the kitchen at the other end. She is young and has a lot of time to refine her ideas and become better at decision making and time planning.
John did a brilliant job this week and his room was that buzz word “cohesive”. I note that the building owners are uneasy about the way John's distinctive period style doesn't sit well with the building, however, and I feel it is in danger of becoming a pastiche.
I wonder why Jamie didn't spray the paint on the walls, to save time. He does a nice job, but I dislike the inevitable white. Also, a day or so afterwards, I find that his spaces are less memorable.
Tara had to make such a multi functional space that she was at a disadvantage. How could you possibly fit everything in? I felt she had a good try, with some good ideas but it ended up feeling cramped. Which, as pointed out upthread, is often the way with modern urban dwellings.

SoupDragon · 21/05/2023 11:14

I liked the idea of the doodle wall but it should have been a smooth white wall so it could be painted over rather than the clear afterthought that it was.

SoupDragon · 21/05/2023 11:16

Where will Tara's children sleep?!

I've been wondering about that. I don't think they look like 2 bed apartments from the floor plan they show when they have the computer mock ups of the proposed design.

Or a chalkboard. that rough chip board looked like a hasty fix for a broken window and wasn't even a good surface for doodling.

I think some contestants have never had any intention of living there, they would just sell it and use it to fund a more suitable purchase. The woman who went in the first episode (I think it was her) had a family and lived in Devon - no way would she have transported them to a small apartment in Sheffield.
