What do you guys think?

OP posts:

I'm sorry , I didn't mean to offend anyone.
She must have gambled or drunk her money away over time then.

Spoiler alert

I did binge watch this and found it ok , although when she moved in with Selby I just knew it wouldn't be a good a idea :(
Best programme like this was ' Almas not normal' on last year , which was more realistic in its approach

Catspyjamas17 · 18/04/2023 10:40

Well yes she probably has made unwise choices. I didn't realise a programme about someone with no money or home had to contain only paragons of virtue who have fallen on hard times through no fault of their own. It's much more interesting that she is a flawed character.

MetaDaughter · 18/04/2023 11:05

Alma’s Not Normal - stellar, but again the portrayal of poverty necessarily involving sex work was a shame.

In My Skin (about a schoolgirl with a difficult, deprived home life) was outstanding.

Mood - completely centred on sex work, but felt far more honest, less poverty porn fantasy land, than Rain Dogs. Wasn’t played for laughs.

In my skin is absolutely brilliant. Also autobiographical I think?

Crumpetdisappointment · 18/04/2023 18:59

I preferred In My Skin
and Mood was definitely better than Rain Dogs, far more believable.

regarding the adoption, i thought they could have just married? but tbh they were both crazy broken people

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 18/04/2023 19:08

Just finished it.

Overall thought it was okay, the Somerset stereotypes were totally ott though 🙄 I live in Somerset and we're not all country bumpkins!

I'd watch a second series.

the80sweregreat · 17/04/2023 21:34

Selby's hair annoys me.

How dare you!! i thought it was glorious!!

NecklessMumster · 19/04/2023 15:55

I loved the scouse woman inpatient in the psych unit too, I have done some work in this area, there was something about her that rang true to me.

Flamingnorahs · 20/04/2023 11:35

I have one episode left to watch. Like other posters, it seems to have gotten rather stuck in my head and I can't stop thinking about it. I don't know if I like it or not. I'm uncomfortable that I like Selby.

Spoiler alert.

Have I understood correctly that it was the mum who was sexualy abusing costello? Was she the one who had left the scars? An interesting and extremely taboo subject to be explored.

This is the same actor who was in the Responder. She was great in that too.

CarlaH · 21/04/2023 15:19

Not the most original question but how could she afford to be smoking so much. I know people buy fags off the back of a lorry so they are cheaper but she was meant to be completely broke wasn't she. Thats before the drinking started as well.

Yes, that was really brilliant. Loads better than this. I think DMC is just great in it, all the actors are actually, but it is an extremely grim watch. So many absolutely vile men. I hated the rape jokes too

Yeah that's what I understood, really disturbing and grim.

ItsCalledAConversation · 23/04/2023 20:58

Just finished it. I fucking loved it. The unansweredness, the beauty within the horror, the family you choose. Wanting to give a fuck, not giving a fuck, suddenly giving a fuck. A toxic dynamic that nmakes no sense (Selby and Costello) that yet makes all the sense in the world. Frustrated ambition, weakness, human frailty. Costello is a completely new character. Selby was hideous and glorious. Adored it. Will probably watch it through again to get more out of it.

the80sweregreat · 24/04/2023 18:02

Cruel to be kind , those lyrics sum up this drama completely.
(Although I did cringe when she did that to his treasured vinyl !)

It was so unremittingly grim amoral and sleazy I turned off. I didn't want that shit in my head.

It was grim and depressing. I’ve also given up.

Daisy Jones reminded me of Jo Brand in a way.

FionnulaTheCooler · 25/04/2023 07:35

I've just finished the series, I'm not sure if I would watch a second series. The only character I had even a little bit of sympathy for was Costello, even then it was limited because she made some truly shite choices and put her child in danger so many times. I hated Selby, he was vile, and the fact that Gloria decided to continue her pregnancy but then keep drinking made me so angry.

aquayen · 25/04/2023 09:59

I meant Daisy Cooper not Jones!

It's her deadpan delivery.

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/04/2023 10:10

Disappointing.

aquayen · 25/04/2023 10:13

Yes, it's the delivery @mewkins

icelollycraving · 25/04/2023 22:13

I like DMC. The strip club reminded me of the story of her auditioning for a pole dancer job and calling herself Louise Rednapp 🤣
I’m 6 episodes in. Some of it is quite shocking, I was most shocked by the webcam for men wanking to them being in a refuge. I guess believable but really terrible. I also was confused by her brother, he looked like the nighty loving man preying on single mums.
It’s quite depressing but some parts had a humour.
I really liked AIBU.

Bluesheep8 · 27/04/2023 15:19

Same here. 2 episodes and gave up

Inthedarkagain · 27/04/2023 21:56

I'm finding it OK. It is hard going, but I'm managing to find humour in it and I think that is key.

I'm only two episodes in though.

I have known people a bit like Selby. One chap who wasn't particularly violent or rich and wasnt gay, but thrived on chaos and thought he was Hunter S Thompson. King of bullshit he was. Not sure why he reminds me of this guy.

I don't think there is enough realism on TV, so I welcome this. I preferred Alma's not normal, still a bit grim but the main character was very positive. Same with Raised by Wolves. The families aren't particularly well off and struggle, but it's funny and more closer to my experiences as a kid from a single parent family from a council estate.

A clear message about our class divide and the state our country is currently in.

Definitely

I've just finished it and it has really stayed with me. A brilliant, if unsettling, watch
