Race Across The World - Series 3

LindorDoubleChoc · 14/03/2023 20:51

This starts Wednesday week on BBC1 (22 March).

Anyone want to join me on a thread about it? I saw some episodes of the previous two series but didn't watch them all and am kicking myself about it now because it really is such an interesting and beautifully shot reality series.

So am going to watch the whole of the next one - this time in Canada!

That sounds almost impossibly tough.

I'm at the stage where I don't care a bit who wins this one. I just want it to be finished with.

I cannot believe what they are being expected to attempt - and they have very very little food (one younger - vegetarian - man ate the provided rations of tinned clams and threw up for six hours). It does made RATW seems cushy by comparison!

martinisforeveryone · 23/04/2023 10:34

That sounds dangerous. He must've been so weak after that and fearful of what else was coming his way.

Puts a different perspective on sleeping sitting up on a bus.

Exactly ---- although he just "got on with it" the next day. He and his Dad ended up in the lead, after climbing a (small - ish mountain, and rappelling back down - this time, the Dad was throwing up due to a fear of heights, despite having been an adventure leader for 15 years).
He must have needed some sustenance or medication. The woman who was helicoptered out was whispering that she needed electrolytes, before she collapsed, thinking she was about to die.

I am watching both, and taking each for what they are - but yes, RATW has it much "easier", I think. Not likely to actually --- die.
Also the Alaska Race is for (!) 40 days - I cannot imagine many of them will make it to the end. (3 episodes in)

ForeverbyJudyBlume · 23/04/2023 11:35

I watched a lot of this episode on fast forward – I just cannot be bothered with the job bits. Apart from anything else, how does that work in terms of visas and permits? Did I imagine it/ miss it or did Claudia and Kevin get a taxi the last bit to the checkpoint? I saw some of them getting a lift but did they all? I’m watching basically because I want there to be a better season four, but it really is getting quite tedious now.

LatteOneShotplease · 23/04/2023 13:34

The job bits do add a bit of variety, as the actual travel is less interesting, I find; and the route seems to double back on itself, frustratingly.
I did not like the part with the buffalo skin. (I thought she was vegetarian.... have I got that wrong?)

They have "only" eaten clams, and slugs (!) so far on the Alaska race.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 23/04/2023 15:32

I think the Visas must be done by the production beforehand - as they are filming continuously as well there will be lots of stuff done behind the scenes with Canadian Tourism and other authorities

afterdropshock · 23/04/2023 18:04

How do you watch the Alaska thing?

Netflix?

I have watched it at friend's - not sure, so I'll check.

afterdropshock · 23/04/2023 22:32

Thank you

Thank you

Hm, not Netflix..... I think they have a VPN, or some way to watch these things that I don't. I wouldn't like to link and send, in case of weird pop-ups that come at the start, but not during the programme...
(wink)

In our house he's called Smug Kevin and I'd like anyone to win apart from him - I'm still not over the 4 hour loss of the ladies due to curfew hours - they should still have started 4 hour's before everyone else

But it would not have made any difference because of the train to Churchill which only goes twice a week.

Jellybebe · 24/04/2023 09:12

"But it would not have made any difference because of the train to Churchill which only goes twice a week"

That is true however if they had the additional 4 hours they may have had more time to get a cheeper mode of transport or squeeze in a job to earn money which would benefit them later on.

KnittingNeedles · 24/04/2023 09:17

I agree that the jobs are set up - they have to be because of Visa requirements. Canada is hot on illegal working and random Brits cleaning loos and making cakes is not a "thing". I would imagine on the scouting trip the crew look out potentially interesting jobs and strike a deal with the business owner - We'll pay you $1000 if you have these two randomers in for the afternoon, we film it all for the telly, and at the end you "pay" them whatever the going rate is for the job.

In previous series where they have been travelling through other parts of the world which are not so strict on illegal working, yes the jobs they picked up were perhaps more genuine.

QuietlyConfident · 24/04/2023 09:57

The jobs in the previous series were also pre-arranged: you saw them flicking through the printed booklet of potential jobs to decide their routes.

sashagabadon · 24/04/2023 10:21

I think it was the South American one where they touted for work themselves in exchange usually for bed and board. I can remember the mum/ son combo doing this a fair bit. She was a very travelled and confident person and could speak the languages a little.
but I think it’s generally fair to set it up in advance especially if it would be illegal otherwise.

LatteOneShotplease · 24/04/2023 10:32

I would have thought it was a given that the working visas/jobs themselves are prearranged, especially somewhere like Canada. Imagine if the work was as hard to find as the ride-sharing....
Misleading for anyone who might think they can rock up and find paid work easily.

(My daughter went on a Student programme - working with wolves, and my half-brother went on a language exchange years ago whilst at Exeter, and is still there now married and with children, and a citizen I believe, working in "Real Estate". I hope they don't come across him, and ask for a lift (Montreal), he would be unlikely to assist.)

LindorDoubleChoc · 26/04/2023 20:46

Hello to all still watching. I was going to give up by I'm too invested now! See you on the other side ...

The thing with the jobs is that the next area can't be a total surprise as it is the journey along where the jobs are

So if you are travelling from London to Edinburgh you don't find jobs in Cornwall

Jellykat · 26/04/2023 21:03

I'm hooked too.. wont they need to get rid of another couple soon?

NCTDN · 26/04/2023 21:07

At last! A choice of transport and routes Grin

SUBisYodrethwhenLarping · 26/04/2023 21:07

They really need to try to speak French

When we went there and Montreal people didn't want to speak to me cos I don't speak or understand french so they would talk with DH

Hellocatshome · 26/04/2023 21:08

Kevin has mentioned taxis already!

purpleme12 · 26/04/2023 21:08

He's thinking about taxis again 🤣

SUBisYodrethwhenLarping · 26/04/2023 21:11

Guelph is much closer to Niagara falls than Toronto anyway
